I have not really watched much of the olympic's this year, but I plan to watch some .of it later tonight maybe. I normally only watch the hockey, but I might switch it up this year.

The States are kicking ass right now.

Medal Standings:
1) USA 20
2) Germany 13
3) Norway 10
4) Canada 8
5) France 7

The British reporters seem awful butthurt for whatever reason. Could someone please shed some light onto the reason for this?

I kid, I kid. You guys have been playing the "underdog" card all tourney long, but being undefeated, that ain't working anymore :O Up front, the USA is small, skilled, and fast. Depth though is key. I just don't think that the 3rd and 4th lines of the Americans can match Canada's 3rd and 4th lines. Also, Canada's defence is much more skilled than the USA's. The biggest reason why you guys won before was because of goaltending. Ryan Miller has been amazing for Buffalo this season, but this time around we will have our goaltending situation resolved too (Roberto Luongo is the guy in for us, FYI - he plays for Vancouver in the NHL). The USA is really plucky, but I just don't see them winning twice against Canada in the same tourney - I mean, the USA was even outplayed by Canada when you guys beat us. I can't see another goaltending meltdown like we had the first time around. Prediction: 4-1 Canada.

Oh, and we beat you guys 2-0 in women's hockey too for the gold :P

Probably because of Kipper and Olli Jokinen (who they traded because he was sucking the proverbial big one), right? They did get Nik Hagman though, so I'm assuming that takes some of the sting out of losing one of the higher profile Finns in the NHL. I would've guessed that you liked Anaheim though, with Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.

Also, Sunday at 12 noon PST, it's gonna be Canada vs. the USA in the final event of the 2010 Olympics :O I'm almost pissing myself with excitement.

After watching a bunch of the Olympics i have two things to say:

1. I will always make a point to watch womens snowboarding competitions from now on. Rwar!

2. Country representation just seems waaay out of whack. I don't think that USA should get credit for some of the medals they got. Why? because half of the time, the commentators would mention how representatives of the country were originally born elsewhere in the world and moved to the USA. Doesn't that just seem a bit unfair. Sure, the USA has a lot of resources and a person's chances of succeeding in Olympics stand greater when they are backed by the programs that the USA has to offer... but it just doesn't seem genuine to me. I have more respect for underdog countries that succeed in the olympics with their own resources, no matter how limited they may be. Case in point: Jamaican Bobsled team. RESPECT!

If they're US citizens, which they are, why does it matter where they're born? They chose to represent the US.

Also, I'd think that there would be heavy pressure from the US to compete for them. Why spend your time and money and resources on an athlete that will not win you anything? There would be no reason to. I think that athletes had less of a choice than many people may like to think.

With this being said, they did choose to train in the USA, so any expectations that they may use American resources to compete for another country would have been naive. Many may view themselves as Americans too. I have a friend who was born in China and moved here in third grade, but he sees himself as a Canadian rather than Chinese.

But, I tend to agree with JD on the fact that I wish that athletes would represent their birth country more, but in the Winter Olympics especially, many countries just lack the infastructure necesary for training olympic athletes.

I guess the part that bothers me is the circumstances that lead them to representing the U.S. Whereas, their native country could probably benefit greatly from the exposure and morale boost that comes with having a medalist in the olympics. There were several competitors that grew up in their native countries, but when they showed promise in their respective sports they moved to the US and became citizens in the US to benefit from the more advanced facilities and resources... therefore becoming better because they had better resources, not because they were more talented then somebody else. I think it sucks that their native country does not get the exposure and rewards because those sorts of things can increase revenue and participation for their olympic programs. Making them stronger and more competitive. It wouldn't surprise me if some countries (US included) recruit possible team members from other countries and progress them through the ropes of citizenship just to win. To me, that is not in the spirit of true Olympics.
