DP, I know, but I forgot this. Ounce will be happy. He's also apparently raising money to help save the Snow Leopard from extinction. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/active/7198140/Vancouver-2010-Winter-Olympics-Ghanas-snow-leopard-seeks-gold.html)

I have seen the video. It is not possible to put into words quite how it looks. All I can say is that Canada has offered its sincerest condolences to his family and friends, the country of Georiga, and the World. Personally, I have absolutely no idea why there was a fixed structure there that could be hit. There should have been either a wall, plexiglass barrier, or any form of netting to prevent something like this. It was a stupid, stupid oversight on behalf of whoever designed the track, and it should never have happened.

I hope that this does not ruin the Olympics, even though it is a massive stain. Let us proceed with the upcoming weeks, and cheer our nations on, urging them to succeed at all of their events.

After day 1 of the medal rounds, the USA is tops with 4 medals (1G, 1S, 2B), and South Korea is the only other country with multiple medals (1G, 1S). The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Slovakia are 4, 5, and 6 all with a gold medal, and Canada, Germany, and Poland all have a silver. I'm loving the 4 channels of round-the-clock coverage we're getting here :D

The States are kicking ass right now.

Medal Standings:
1) USA 20
2) Germany 13
3) Norway 10
4) Canada 8
5) France 7

The British reporters seem awful butthurt for whatever reason. Could someone please shed some light onto the reason for this?

Miikka Kiprusoff shat the bed, which makes me very happy because he plays for Calgary in the NHL (here in Vancouver, we hate Calgary's team). All that stands in the way of a Canada vs. USA final now is Slovakia...

USA vs Canada REMATCH

Predictions?
Title: Re: THE OLYMPIC THREAD
Post by: R0B0SH4RK on February 26, 2010, 07:29:26 PM
47-0 Canada :P

I kid, I kid. You guys have been playing the "underdog" card all tourney long, but being undefeated, that ain't working anymore :O Up front, the USA is small, skilled, and fast. Depth though is key. I just don't think that the 3rd and 4th lines of the Americans can match Canada's 3rd and 4th lines. Also, Canada's defence is much more skilled than the USA's. The biggest reason why you guys won before was because of goaltending. Ryan Miller has been amazing for Buffalo this season, but this time around we will have our goaltending situation resolved too (Roberto Luongo is the guy in for us, FYI - he plays for Vancouver in the NHL). The USA is really plucky, but I just don't see them winning twice against Canada in the same tourney - I mean, the USA was even outplayed by Canada when you guys beat us. I can't see another goaltending meltdown like we had the first time around. Prediction: 4-1 Canada.

Oh, and we beat you guys 2-0 in women's hockey too for the gold :P

Probably because of Kipper and Olli Jokinen (who they traded because he was sucking the proverbial big one), right? They did get Nik Hagman though, so I'm assuming that takes some of the sting out of losing one of the higher profile Finns in the NHL. I would've guessed that you liked Anaheim though, with Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.

Also, Sunday at 12 noon PST, it's gonna be Canada vs. the USA in the final event of the 2010 Olympics :O I'm almost pissing myself with excitement.

Go Nordiques!  :P

After watching a bunch of the Olympics i have two things to say:

1. I will always make a point to watch womens snowboarding competitions from now on. Rwar!

2. Country representation just seems waaay out of whack. I don't think that USA should get credit for some of the medals they got.  Why? because half of the time, the commentators would mention how representatives of the country were originally born elsewhere in the world and moved to the USA. Doesn't that just seem a bit unfair. Sure, the USA has a lot of resources and a person's chances of succeeding in Olympics stand greater when they are backed by the programs that the USA has to offer... but it just doesn't seem genuine to me.  I have more respect for underdog countries that succeed in the olympics with their own resources, no matter how limited they may be.  Case in point: Jamaican Bobsled team.  RESPECT!

If they're US citizens, which they are, why does it matter where they're born? They chose to represent the US.

Also, I'd think that there would be heavy pressure from the US to compete for them. Why spend your time and money and resources on an athlete that will not win you anything? There would be no reason to. I think that athletes had less of a choice than many people may like to think.

With this being said, they did choose to train in the USA, so any expectations that they may use American resources to compete for another country would have been naive. Many may view themselves as Americans too. I have a friend who was born in China and moved here in third grade, but he sees himself as a Canadian rather than Chinese.

But, I tend to agree with JD on the fact that I wish that athletes would represent their birth country more, but in the Winter Olympics especially, many countries just lack the infastructure necesary for training olympic athletes.

I guess the part that bothers me is the circumstances that lead them to representing the U.S.  Whereas, their native country could probably benefit greatly from the exposure and morale boost that comes with having a medalist in the olympics.  There were several competitors that grew up in their native countries, but when they showed promise in their respective sports they moved to the US and became citizens in the US to benefit from the more advanced facilities and resources... therefore becoming better because they had better resources, not because they were more talented then somebody else.  I think it sucks that their native country does not get the exposure and rewards because those sorts of things can increase revenue and participation for their olympic programs.  Making them stronger and more competitive.  It wouldn't surprise me if some countries (US included) recruit possible team members from other countries and progress them through the ropes of citizenship just to win.  To me, that is not in the spirit of true Olympics.

Your thoughts?

Many athletes who train in the US and live in the US do choose to compete for their native country (Yao Ming comes to mind). Forcing an athlete to compete for the country they're born in is bullsh**. What if they left that nation because they have nothing but contempt for it? Say I'm a refugee from North Korea. Why in the hell would I even compete in the Olympics if I had to represent a nation I loathe?

Valid points.

But, a refugee would loathe North Korea because of its corrupt government and policies.  Even more the reason to represent the country, to be a hero for the common people and give the children something to look up to.  If a person flees North Korea and wins a gold medal for the U.S. all they are inspiring North Korean Children to do is run from their country if they want to follow their dreams.  If that person would be a hero in their native land, they would inspire something much greater.

I think that you've (Frezal) misinterpreted what JD is saying. While forcing anyone to compete for their birth country is bullsh**, as you say, and a probably a characteristic of totalitarian regiemes, JD's point is that the USA anlong with other economicly elite countries should not scoop up athletes from budding programs to further their own chances of winning medals. Also, I'd say Yao Ming is a different case, as he was trained in China, not the USA, and he is a professional athlete, unlike many olympians. It was only recently that the olympics allowed professional athletes to compete, too (it was actually the top amatuers in the world - this led to the Canadian hockey team boycotting many as they argued that the Soviets were so good that they could not be considered amateurs, so it was unfair that we coundn't send our pros to combat theirs).

Contempt is one thing (although North Korea's media controls are so extreme that few probably know how poor their country is), but I am of the mind that part of the deal of athletes training in the USA is that they must represent the USA too. If they want to get ahead, they know that they must train in the USA, and then represent them. It comes down really to if their desire to win at all costs outweighs their national pride.

Post by: frezal on February 27, 2010, 07:16:05 PM
At the end of the day, the US isn't forcing anybody to compete for Team USA. If the athlete chooses to use our advanced facilities and to compete for our team, then so be it.

As for North Korea, spreading the message that in order to achieve one's dreams, one must leave North Korea is a good thing. Competing for the nation would only legitimize a tyrannical regime.
