I don't believe that the "dial 999" picture is actually a fail. More likely, it's a phone in England, where the emergency number is in fact, 999

Which is actually more efficient when you think about it, dialing the same digit thrice is easier than dialing a nine, and then reaching for the one all the way across the board. Not a big deal, you say? well, imagine if an ant had to dial the police. He'd disagree.
