Death is going to happen in life, and no amount of dwelling on it can ever change that. Life goes on, and by avoiding things because of this death, you miss out. I'm not saying that you should not care about the friend's death, I'm actually saying the opposite. You obviously cared deeply for him, and I'm sure that he wouldn't want to see you unhappy, especially because of him.

The thing is, neither of us asked the other one if they wanted to get together, it just sort of happened.

One plus point, I think, is that you don't bias your opinion on what the person looks like. At least me and my girlfriend didn't for a long time, and I think that's a contributing factor to why we grew so close to each other.
