I was out doing some work in the yard today... mowing the lawn, cutting down weeds and bamboo, and various other tasks.  I noticed this little guy on a flower and he seemed totally content with me taking a few pics.

That's a bush katydid!  They're usually really hard to find because they hide in trees and bushes, where they look like just another leaf.

Really nice picture, do you have experience with macro photography?

Been a while since I posted anything, so I saw this thread and figured, what the hell ....

One of my fleet of pocketbikes, and the most modified, The Rat:
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp127/SpyGuy/The%20Rat/TheRat-COLLAGE.jpg

Wrench chain guard: "flat-bar" wrenches - top one is a 19mm/22mm from a Yamaha tool kit.
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp127/SpyGuy/The%20Rat/WrenchChainGuard02.jpg

Brass knuckle fender: Okay I lied - it's not really brass.  From left to right, those are box-ends from a 5/8", 11/16", 5/8", and 9/16" wrenches.  Crossbar on back is rest of handle from 9/16" wrench, supports between main body and crossbar are Allen wrenches, brackets to fork legs are gate hinges.

Some of my welded artwork (picked up a little Harbor Freight MIG welder, 90-amp, 110v fluxcore wirefeed, no gas):

Something for Urjak - my big spider, built from bicycle rims:

Scorpion: needlenose pliers for claws, under-cabinet mug holder for underbody and legs, electrical panel cover for body, spike is from a meat tenderizer

The Eye of Horus (Egyptian symbol): bicycle rims - the "eyeball" is a 12" rim

Fred, my rusty rattlesnake and shop mascot: chain body, serving spoon head, bearings and washers for eyes, fondue fork tongue.

George, Fred's little brother: bicycle chain body, tongue and eyes made from extra links and roller bearings, spring tail
http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp127/SpyGuy/Welding%20And%20Metal%20Art/My%20Welding%20Stuff/Picture001-1.jpg

My rusty roadrunner: GM wrench body, fireplace poker head, spatula for wings, rear triangle from bicycle frame for legs and feet, gate hinge tail.

Wrench-o-saurus: Monkey wrench body, smaller wrenches for legs/feet/arms, bicycle chain for spine and tail.

Dual-purpose tailgater silverware: 'Nuff said.

Celtic Tri-Knot: 27" bicycle rims

For all you hippies out there ... Peace And Love: 20" bicycle rim, wrenches, bendix gear sliced in half.

New Mexico sun symbol (Zia) (screwed up - symbol has four bars on every side, not three): 12" bicycle rim, tubes are from rear triangle of bicycle frames.

iPod Belt buckle: 2" square tube cut lengthwise, small cabinet hinge, nuts and bolts, endplates and locking plate are scrap steel plate.

The Rose: tablespoons welded around hanging file support rod, "leaves" are handles from spoons.

Dieselpunk logo: front sprocket from bicycle, wrench, two big washers on either side, one edge ground down to fit flush against wrench.

My digital camera has two macro settings on it and I use them often with insect photography.  I guess that has given me some experience.  I could do wonders with a Canon Rebel, but I can't afford one.

@spyguy:  Wow that is a ton of stuff to look at! Awesome!

That is some amazing artwork SpyGuy.  You like bicycle parts, don't you.

Dare I say it...?  Your scorpion has an extra pair of legs; they have 8 legs but the front two are modified into claws.  And the Rose is actually a tulip.

But that's nitpicking; it's great work.

@Jack: Wow, a fellow hobby insect photographer.  If you have more pictures I'd be interested in seeing them.

You can actually do some incredible stuff with regular point and shoot cameras these days.  I use a Canon PowerShot A720IS with a close-up lens, and I am quite pleased with it.  Except when I want to photograph a bug indoors, or when I'm photographing something really tiny.  Then I wish I had a digital SLR with a ring flash.

Clickbeetle: This weeks Sports Illustrated Magazine has a really good pic of a praying mantis that was at some baseball stadium. I could probably post a pic of it, or you could just pick it up at a store.
I built that big robot on that TV show that time

I am guessing female Lucanus cervus (stag beetle) but that's pretty small for one.

Lol, my idea for her story was:
Matilda was cursed at a young age, growing up would make her ugly.
Simple :P

I would've inserted Tool's pic here, but that's too offensive.

Looks more of a vestigial tail to me. Besides, I don't know which side is facing front. :P
