Debate: A Gun is Always a Gun?
« on: February 17, 2010, 03:57:06 PM »
I had to do a current event for geography class, and I chose this one:
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/35234742/ns/today-today_people/

A nine-year-old kid was suspended from school for bringing in a 2-inch Lego gun to school and playing with it at lunch. This is part of the "zero tolerance" policy in schools.

A 2-inch gun is not a gun. Just because it looks like a gun, doesn't mean it should be considered a weapon.

Zero Tolerance? More like Zero intelligence.

What do you think? Debating is of course, encouraged.

AK47: Gun.
BB Gun: not as violent but still should not be allowed.
Water gun: No way in heck is that a weapon.
2" Lego gun: No. Way.

It's not a weapon, nor does it look like one, (at least not at that scale). I don't think it should be banned from any schools.

Unless it looked amazingly like an Uzi (impossible because it's Lego and only two inches long) there's no reason to take it away. A hunk of plastic is not a deadly weapon.

A few binder clips can be turned into a very painful weapon. Why don't they ban those from schools?

EDIT: And unless you're James Bond, there's no such thing as a gun two inches long. That's ridiculous.

Heh, when I was that age my principal threatened to suspend me for wearing a Bart Simpson tee shirt.  It read: "Underachiever and proud of it man!"

XD

2 inch lego gun eh? Priceless stuff... Welcome to the USP (United States of Paranoia)
If I were rich, single, and had time, I would buy that little plastic gun and do a documentary of where it would get me into trouble.  Could I bring it onto an aircraft?  Would they let me bring it into the White House during one of those public tours?  Could I give it to an prison inmate as a present?

I bet the reactions to that little plastic gun would be worthy of a movie documentary.

Hands are lethal weapons; you can use them to punch someone or choke them to death.  They shouldn't be allowed in school.

I know it looks like a gun, but if they can't get it to shoot projectiles (the first clue should've been that their sausage fingers were too big to work the trigger), then by what stretch of the imagination is it a gun?

When I was a kid i played with self-built Lego "guns" (more like crossbows) with elastic rubber wires and tossed 1x1 bricks with them.

I achieved a few meters by second as speeds, but the accuracy was terrible and the gun was like 8 inches long.

So a 2-inch gun is not a weapon (unless you poke eyes with it but there are digits or/and better school furniture for this), and it is overreacting.

Hands are lethal weapons; you can use them to punch someone or choke them to death.  They shouldn't be allowed in school.

I thought I was the only one who built lego crossbows. Mine were the opposite, great accuracy (for lego) but zero power. And that was a foot and a quarter long.

I can see not letting people have sharp objects, an awl can do a lot of damage, but a two inch long piece of plasitic is just overdoing it.
