They are not. Debate leagues certainly can help train your eloquency skillz (well as long as it doesn't becomes a shouting contest). Geography bee trains memory and knowledge.They are just means not ends, of course, but they are useful tools for training your skills.
Frezal you're correct. However it does differ dependent on person to person, it's just the general acceptation by most people that it is considered a sport in it's own right. Some people might consider you an athlete for those activities, some might, it really depends on who you talk to. Everyone is different.
