Title: Thinking of Hosting a Tournament
Post by: Scourge of teh Galaxy on July 12, 2011, 10:05:51 AM
Yes, I can hear you screaming and running away. I can see you scrabbling at the locked door, in the futile hope that there's a way out.

But I thought "Hey, why not? I mean, it shouldn't be too hard - if I get help."

So I'd like to get help with hosting a tournament please. I'm not entirely sure how to do it, so any help you could give me is duly appreciated. I know I won't be able to properly host Tournaments until I learn to AI, but I would like to do my bit in the Tournaments section.

We now have a Team. I shall call it Fatal Hounds Team Awesome The Team.

AIer: freeziez

What ever you do , do not make it Anime-related. Anime is a Japanese cartoon with emotion. And it fails.

Good thinking.  I'm sure that's exactly what Scourge was going to do if you didn't stop her.

PS, Most cartoons are from a country and have some kind of emotion, so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

and how would I go about the various parts of a tournament?

There's 5 questions you should be able to say yes to:

Do you have a set of rules in mind that you're willing to stand by?
Can you AI (not making the bindings, just inserting the tournament bots into the AI slots)?
Do you have a screen recorder?
Do you have the time and interest to see this through all the way to the end? ("this" being 15 battles, and awards)

The 5th question was going to be "Can you make a good looking splash and brackets" but I've seen your art, so I think it's a given that you can.

Many tourney's don't have prizes. Maybe just a reserve in future tourneys or just eternal satisfaction that they won.

One a day is fine, if you can stick to that, then you're golden.  I'm pleased with your answers, very much so.  The fact that you're thinking about prizes is another thing that makes you above-average already.

Artwork is a great idea, you could offer a custom decal as a prize; that way people who won could display it on their 'bots in subsequent torunaments.

Here's a good tutorial to the AI thing; it's better than what I had in mind because you don't have to overwrite any existing bots:
https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,3942.0.html (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,3942.0.html)

As for Fraps, it's good for recording RA2, but it doesn't record desktop programs like Photoshop.  CamStudio is the program that the Mario Paint recorders swear by, maybe give it a look.

Here's an idea of what it'll be like:

Quote from: Tournament signup thingy
Crown Tourney

Weight Class: Stock HeavyWeight

Rules
- cheatbot2 is not allowed
- Any bot type (Are there any that actually can't be properly AI'd?)
- Soft Spots are the only allowed glitch (What's the real name for that glitch anyway?)
- <insert some kind of Havok rule here>
- Single Elimination (Randomised brackets)
- 16 spots

Prizes:
1st Place would get:
- Up to two decals of their choice
- A place in my next tourney (if I do another one)
- A full-color picture with background of their choice
- A special promo art to do with the Crown Tourney

2nd Place would get:
- A decal of their choice
- A place in my next Tourney (if I do another one)
- A fullbody-color picture with no background of their choice

3rd Place would get:
- A place in my next Tourney

Or something

and I need a Havok rule, but I have no idea what one of those is >.<

Any suggestions on improvements?

Probably the worst way to start the first tournament because it won't get popular vote.  You don't have to take my word for it, you can check the history yourself.

It looks like I'll be needing more help than just with the Havok Rule, AI'ing and stuff... if I can't even conform to the rules, and end up making Joe angry

So, uh, here's a revised edition:

Quote from: Tournament signup thingy
Crown Tourney

Weight Class: Stock HeavyWeight

Rules
- cheatbot2 is not allowed
- Any bot type
- Soft Spots are the only allowed glitch
- Allowed three major Havoks before being disqualified
- Single Elimination (Randomised brackets)
- 16 spots

Prizes:
1st Place would get:

- A place in my next tourney (if I do another one)

You're not sucking, you just forgot to cover some bases from ACAMS' set of rules:

-If Multibots are allowed/their Max weight/if one is out are both out
-Type of bots allowed/disallowed (some people have strong opinions on crawlers, popups, and SnS so make sure you're clear.)
-If Multibots are allowed/their Max weight/if one is out are both out
-Arena to be used/Arena hazards on or off.
-Nobody can be entered until a bot is received and accepted
-State if bots can be upgraded, and how may times/until when, and if bot type can be changed

Title: Re: Thinking of Hosting a Tournament
Post by: 123savethewhales on July 16, 2011, 07:58:42 AM
Seeing as how you don't know what a 36HS is, I have to assume you don't care enough about what other people build to ever look at showcases.  I neither play Stock nor look at Stock showcase and I still know what a 36HS is.  And, not caring enough to showcase your own bot makes this worst.

Running a tournament doesn't simply mean how often you play the game on your own.  You have to actually care about other people's bots because curiosity is the only motivation you will get during the filming/uploading process, which is tedious and unrewarding.  Some of the more boring matches you won't even get response from anyone.

I wanted to try and contribute to the community, but I guess I'll never be able to do that

I don't care about the boring bits.
I can spend at least three hours syncing lyrics to a song in Movie Maker and get no responses to it, but I still do it, even though it's boring, because it's my way of trying to contribute to YT.
I can spend up to five days painstakingly shading a drawing, which isn't only boring, but frustrating, and get all negative comments, but I still do it, because it's my way of trying to contribute to deviantART.
I can spend up to a week creating and finetuning a bot for BOTM, which is as frustrating as heck, and only get sympathy votes, but I still do it, because I'm trying to contribute to this community.

I'm a dedicated person - if I say I'll do something, I'll do it, and if I give a timeframe, I'll try my hardest to conform to it. I don't always do things because I love to, but I always try to do things to contribute to the community I'm in.

@ty4er: I'm not sure if you realise this, but I recently re-acquired RA2 Stock. Recently as in on Monday. I'm having to rebuild all of my bots from scratch, and juggle doing so with things that I actually have a timeframe set for. Once I've got those things out of the way, I can wholly focus on RA2 and finish rebuilding my Valintinian set in the very least.

Remember, not only do I have four jobs, I also run commissions and enter contests and manage forums and wikis and contribute to various other forums.

Seriously... Don't think your joking but... I do thing a tournament host should be able to AI and everything that comes with it like filming matching and such. AIing isn't that hard though.
Still, for example... What would you be able to do on the part of AIing and match filming?

Match-filming is easy - I have a program I use for Livestream recording, I can configure it to record.

As for AI, freeziez said he'd help out

Don't think I haven't thought this through, PR
