Title: Summer Sumo
Post by: kill343gs on April 29, 2011, 10:52:47 AM
Well folks, my semester ends next week and I'm likely to have quite a bit of free time. I figured I'd do something a little different... A sumo bot tourney!

TOURNAMENT SIGNUP RULES:      The catch: No bot is allowed kinetic parts other than its drive! Wheels are the absolute ONLY thing allowed to move on your bot. Also, no components from the "Weapons" tab are allowed! Bursted wedges are allowed, but must remain static.

I remember Duck tried to do one of these a while back. I liked that one, and I like this one. I'll enter.

I already have an idea if it comes to this.. but I need someone to make an special AI for this :)

Yay, Stock! I'm going to enter for sure!

My opinion: Have the arena be the Clawtop and don't apply the realistic rule.

Ok but if its claw top id reccomend hazards OFF.Oh,and make the flame pits eliminated zones as bots cant get back in if they fall in there.

Depends on the robot.

Oh,and make the flame pits eliminated zones as bots cant get back in if they fall in there.
They can, but it's tricky unless you have high ground clearance.

I'd enter if its stock realistic.

I'd enter if its stock realistic.
Same here- on a side note though, I've noticed your avatar goes really well with the closing theme of Blackadder, series 1. Try it-

I'm gonna enter.

I think you should have it be unrealistic if you ask me.
And i'll definately enter, already got an idea actually.

Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: Avalanche on April 29, 2011, 01:32:34 PM
Id still do what i said before because high ground clearance isnt a good thing as it will not have too much room for pushing but will be a flame pit dodger. And those claws are annoying.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: kill343gs on April 29, 2011, 01:52:17 PM
And those claws are annoying.

...They aren't meant to be your friends. If I used claw top it will be WITH hazards to make it more interesting.

General consensus is liking the stock idea right now, glad to hear that. Still not sure about realism.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: Thyrus on April 29, 2011, 01:57:27 PM
I would go with stock realistic. there has been only one till now. Also the Clawtop with hazards on is the better choise.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: J on April 29, 2011, 02:07:53 PM
@TC: Clawtop might be better, instead of the Flextop.
Seeing as the bots tend to drive into eachother, regardless of the terrain, they would pretty much drive into the center hole of the flextop :O

1. Ram plates cause damage; can they still be used? (as weapons)
2. Can stuff like battle axes be used as long as it's just for armor?
3. Does all in-game glitches include intentional Havoking bots and the Nasty Pickle glitch?

Because... if you did flubber it like a total noob we would make fun of it for the rest of your existence on this forum.

Yes ramplates can be used; absolutely NO WEAPONS are allowed under any circumstances; and nasty pickle is not allowed. In fact, glitches aren't going to be allowed at all since this is going to be Realistic Stock.

Title: Re: Summer Sumo

By "no kinetic parts" I think Kill means no powered components that actually move, so no pistons.

And I have a great idea for this ! Definitely in.

Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: Fracture on May 01, 2011, 10:07:24 AM
What happens if the time runs out? If it's based on points then, that'll put quite a bit of emphasis on Ramplates for your bot....

I will lol if a bot's control board gets destroyed due to Ramplate attacks. xD

Edit: And I think Clawtop is better suited for MWs. Flextop seems more like a LW arena to me with the big hole in the middle.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo

How is everyone thinking of all sorts of awesome/insane/great ideas?

All I can think of is "make a bot with the best wedge possible".

I can't help but think this will be a wedge war.  :(   Maybe I'm wrong judging by the number of good ideas in this thread.

What happens if the time runs out?

No time limit?  In any case I don't think matches will last that long on the Clawtop.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: Fracture on May 01, 2011, 04:53:22 PM
Time will be set at three minutes

In any case I don't think matches will last that long on the Clawtop.

It could happen. :P Two bots drive off the arena while the other two with the exact same drive and power and equally good wedges engage in a wedge war where neither gets under the other and neither goes backwards or forwards.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo
Post by: NFX on May 01, 2011, 05:04:42 PM
I don't think a wedge stalemate is going to last three entire minutes. The thing is, once a robot is pushed off the side, chances are the opponent's going to drive off after it.

If you're interested in doing arena work for this, be my guest. I'll give you free reign to come up with ideas... Add me on messenger if you'd like, we can talk about it.

And no kinetic parts means NO KINETIC PARTS! Otherwise your "srimech" will start flipping bots off the top...

Also, it will be 1 on 1's, so no need to worry about anything like what Fracture described.

You can have moving parts as long as they're for the drive. :]

P.S. Chained drive motors can't get up to speed even if they go across an entire arena, much less the Clawtop or Flextop.

Is the wildcard going to be determined by a series of one-on-one battles as well? 'Cause I don't think a rumble would be that good of an indicator.

It's cool. Normally a Wildcard match is just a 4-way rumble, but sometimes it's like a mini tournament of its own. I just think that with a rumble in this scenario, once a machine pushes another off the platform, it'll drive off after it.

2) Surely you could ai all the robots using rammer/pusher ai? Just copy and paste the line, change a few of the values like which way it faces and the name and bam, done.

1) The FULL version of FRAPS
and youtube is the best option I do believe.
IIRC vertigo had a fair amount of problems in RA2TC2 with wegame?
2) Aah, but what if somebody someone enters a non-rammer bot?
But yes, you can get away with editing existing AI lines I suppose, the text at the top of the bindings file helps a lot when editing variables.

They shouldn't... It's a sumo tourney. If they somehow manage to have anything fancy, they can AI it themselves. I've said that from the beginning.

That could be Badnik you're thinking of with RW3. I use FRAPS when I record stuff since I found a link somewhere. (yay implicitness)

As for AI'ing, there's some tutorials somewhere, but since bots won't be using Smartzones, there's no need for anything very complex, so Pusher.py should do fine.
Title: Re: Summer Sumo

Have you got the AI chart?

That's all you really need once you've learnt the basics of AI
(which is basically just copy bindings line, change bot's name and put bot in teams folder)

Sns shouldent even be entered.Reason?Because,SNS+Hit on rammer+recoil+tabletop=failing via falling of edge

SnS, wouldn't be that fancy, and I believe would be technically legal?

SnS is what I would call a "Level 2" AI

Rammer/ Omni/ Spinner, etc I consider "Level 1"

Came up with an idea for the wildcard rumble. I was thinking of simply running it numerous times until a single bot had won it three times. That might be a better judge of which bot should get into the main bracket.

Indeed- I've also had some time to prepare some prototypes. Although, are any piston-powered ramplates or shovels allowed? One of my designs features a Spawn of Scutter-esque flipping mechanism driven by a piston.

Nothing kinetic other than wheels for the last time.

The catch: No bot is allowed kinetic parts other than its drive! Wheels are the absolute ONLY thing allowed to move on your bot. Also, no components from the "Weapons" tab are allowed! Bursted wedges are allowed, but must remain static.
EDIT: Too slow

OK- just wanted to be sure. The one with the piston was mainly just an experimental design anyway- all of my other ones use static components.

Everything is to be static except the drive. That's the deal. I think I've come up with a prototype, though. =]

I have a design.Devil Horns 2,with the "horns" and the flippers static. This way,it gets under and CAN drive its opponents around.

If you're going to do a wildcard rumble, and someone enters a multibot into the wildcard rumble. What happens then?

I did try a design like that myself to begin with.

Mine's basically a classic wedge design with a primarily small wedge/ramplate-based wedge, with a shovel at the top for trapping opponents and pushing them around.

Only one part of the multibot will be allowed in the rumble as per normal standards. If you want a multibot you better be ready to submit the minute signups open.

I think he means plow. Wierd thing is, that's almost exactly what my first design was. Then I discovered a critical flaw with it. And swapped it for something more interesting.

Yeah, I was kidding. :P

imo for this you can focus on either good wedges, trapping power, drive, or getting points (i.e. ramplates); possibly more than one. ATM my prototype looks like Mehve and Rabid Pit Bull mashed together. (has RPB's top plow and Mehve's front plows)
