yeah well i expec this one to only be ready in a few months but im posting the discussion now
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on September 19, 2010, 01:41:45 PM
But in a few months bigger and better tourneys will outcompete this. I'm sorry for you as your intentions are good but chances are with the current system this won't be voted in.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: powerrave on September 19, 2010, 01:42:06 PM
well, if this goes well, i may enter.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: somestrangeguy on September 19, 2010, 01:42:25 PM
Limiting the parts you can use is a nice different idea. Gives that Scrapheap feeling "you get what you can find".

That show was quite nice I used to watch Scrapheap Challenge whenever I remembered to watch it.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on September 19, 2010, 01:44:12 PM
I know, have a scrapheap picture with many hidden components in different sections. Then people pick spots from certain sections and get the components hidden there.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Badnik96 on September 19, 2010, 01:45:23 PM
If the list includes something without normals I might enter an edited Swamp Demon.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on September 19, 2010, 01:47:16 PM
they're almost all going to be components that get outclassed by others (normals, non ant batteries etc)
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: NFX on September 19, 2010, 01:52:39 PM
I like this idea. Using components that aren't that good in most cases. I might enter this. =]
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Stagfish on September 19, 2010, 02:07:41 PM
Maybe only one of each component? It would be more like we were finding stuff from the scrapyard.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on September 19, 2010, 02:13:38 PM
then everyone would use the irons and razors and beater bars as their main weapons
nice thinking stag but its not really what im going for

anyway are there any problems with the rules, i want to get them sorted before anything else
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge

Edit: quick idea of parts list in first post

Just make sure you allow a lot of weapons. Otherwise a few bot types will be screwed.

Also, can we use something other than the DSL Tournament arena? I feel that it is being used in too many tournaments.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: GoldenFox93 on September 19, 2010, 04:16:32 PM
Well, what were you expecting from an arena actually called the Tournament arena?  :P
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: NFX on September 19, 2010, 04:51:42 PM
I just had a chat with the other arenas. They felt nelgected. =[

I think what most people like about the DSL Tournament arena, is that it's an open arena with minimal hazards and low walls. Then you can focus more on the bots fighting, and less about luck with the arena.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on September 20, 2010, 12:33:10 AM
The only reason i selected that arena was because i wanted an oota stlye arena but couldntndecide which
Is The ring arena good? Or something else?

Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on September 20, 2010, 02:11:40 PM
uhh, 3, but this probably isnt going to run for a while, im just getting it ready now

Also, did i mention that some lists will have good components, in exchange for rubbish ones elsewhere
I.E. one list will have ant batteries in exchange for four different wheels
Or is that taking it too far?
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: NFX on September 21, 2010, 08:34:18 AM
Maybe a bit far. Keep the wheels the same, just make them rubbish, like Micros, or T-Minus wheels or something.

are there any problems with the rules, i want to get them sorted before anything else

Is it best 2 of 3 battle format, or just 1?

And what will you do if someone enters and you give them their component list, but they never send you a bot?

Possible alternative: post all of the different component lists for everyone to see, so when people enter they will already have a bot all ready.  The only downside to that is that you could get multiple bots using the same component list, but if they're balanced enough then overlap should be minimal.

Bump-idly ump bump, bump bump!

Srsly though, i updated the first post with a near final components list

And if anyone has 3d studio max or the like, i would love some sharp rusty pieces of metal as prizes

Only WBC wheel?
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on October 02, 2010, 02:07:13 AM
@nfx yes
@badnik this isnt the final list yet, but its very close
when i get back from school im going to finalise everthing
so probably is the awnser

Edit: no i changed them to N-12s, and changed the NPC regulars to...
Wait for it...
Waaaaaait fooooor it...

CAR STEERING!

and this is going to be in the blade arena, not the tourney arena, since it sorta feels more like a scrapheap to me

Oh and does anyone know a free alternative to 3d studio max or whatever its called that lets me make mesh for components?
Sharp Rusty Metal FTW!!!
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Badnik96 on October 02, 2010, 06:52:52 AM
Wings 3D is free and makes .3ds files I think. A pain to work with though.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge

I'll definitely enter! (Bot name - Scrapyard Havok)
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge

Serge tells me that only 3D Studio Max allows you to import .gmf files into Robot Arena 2, though.

Oh well then
Does anyone have it btw?
Because i would love to have some sharp rusty metal as a prize

And can anyone see any more glitches with the rules? (apart from the weapons coming soon bit)
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: SteveM4 on October 02, 2010, 08:19:12 AM
No drive motors, too lesser wheels
Maybe up it to:

2x TWM3mr Drive (Correct?, well the ones next to the NPCs)
2x Granny Slipper wheels
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: J24 on October 02, 2010, 08:34:20 AM
The point is it's meant to be components that are never used, so granny slipper wheels and magmotors kinda defeat the object
but thanks anyway for the suggestion
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: Badnik96 on October 02, 2010, 08:36:14 AM
KM, I think the point of this is to make the best noob bot you can using the required parts. Although more wheels (like S3's, mud tires, T-minus wheels, maybe the little tazbot ones) need to be there.
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge
Post by: GoldenFox93 on October 02, 2010, 08:44:34 AM

Piglets + mini wheels make for a good ride, surprisingly!
Title: Re: Scrapheap Challenge

piglets are weapon motors so dont have great torque for drive applications

Surprisingly, they do! But when you add the batterys and CO2 tanks, they are REALLY slow!

How many times must i repeat that PIGLETS ARE NOT DESIGNED AS DRIVE MOTORS BECAUSE OF LOW TORQUE ?

.tga is a targa image format that supports transparency

kinda an old format now.. most people use Png for the same results (handy as they can store info also)

I myself do all my skinning with png's then just use a batch converter to change them to targa

bad weapons
bad motors
bad batteries
bad robots

With the component list you gave us there is NO WAY to build even a decent bot.

Below average, really bad or SOUL-CRUSHINGLY HORRIBLE are the only choices you give to us.

Alternatively you might want to make this a joke tourney...

Oh, and ants. If anything else, orange batts.

The point is though that you have to build the best SOUL-CRUSHINGLY HORRIBLE bot you can and it will face off against other SOUL-CRUSHINGLY HORRIBLE bots to see which is the best SOUL-CRUSHINGLY HORRIBLE bot

No, he's just making things difficult for everyone.

Not to mention the intense fail of making a piglet drive bot or something 2WD but with differently torque'd motors...

Narmor WAS a creative component use when I started to use it. Did the medium amount of building you did ended up in something new or creative ? I don't think so.

RODE  :gawe:

but if you want to talk arenas that are used a lot that would be RA2T#2/ DSL Tourney Arena (both virtually the same thing)

Post by: NFX on October 25, 2010, 07:21:50 AM
Yeah, I've got the RA2T2 arena in mind for my tournament. It's just a simple box with simple corner hazards and simple low walls. It's a simple arena to work with. And easy to reskin, I found. So much so, I've done it twice. =D

I think people believed there was a lot of DSL MW tournaments popping up for some reason. Which I thought wasn't true, there wasn't actually that many that I saw. Which is why mines was DSL MW. =P
