Title: Robot Wars style tournament.
Post by: Merrick on February 09, 2013, 07:22:37 PM
Would there be any interest in a Robot Wars style display tournament?
I've been lurking for a while just looking through showcases and tournamants and was wondering if there was any interest in a completely original lineup of robots designed to look like they could be on the tv show.

They're not anything like your DSL showcases but they're (hopefully) balanced enough to not be completely one-sided. :-)

I, for one, would be happy to see you start a display tournament.

Do you plan on AIing the bots? If not, I would highly recommend it. For some reason, this section doesn't require you to AI the bots but most successful tournaments are AI vs AI. Human vs AI isn't really fair and human vs human is not allowed by the current rule set (unless you are facing yourself (an even worse idea that human vs AI)).

I will have to AI almost 100 robots, but I'm sure I can learn.

I could probably pull a RW-esque design out of my ass for this.

What are you talking about, it'll be hillarious. Go head.

This tournament should be interesting, also, why Mazakari?

Not sure what you mean by this.

why Mazakari?

Robot sucked, but the name sounds cool and unique. I'm not very good with usernames.

This would be against the rules of display tournaments. No submissions are allowed.

Having browsed some more showcases and read critiques on 'IRL' robots, I fear none of my creations are anywhere near the standard needed to hold any of your interest.

Considering I don't have much understand of custom components, custom paintjobs....pretty much custom anything.
It's all practically DSL defaults and textures downloaded from the site.

Never mind. Have a preview image from a test battle I fought to try and showcase some of the robots involved.

I don't know if you have a showcase or not, but make a showcase and show off some of your bots so we can help you. Don't worry about custom components (unless you mean skinned parts), but custom paintjobs aren't too hard and I've made damn nice looking bots with DSL textures and downloaded textures.

There's only 3 ways to change that; 1) run away like a babyman, 2) let us help you or 3) become amazing all of a sudden by some random force of nature.

And honestly, I quite like the golden half circle like bot in the top right.

The only bad one is the one with S3 wheels.

I like them, they have a classic 'newb' feel to them.

Yeah, it's a bit basic and bland. One of the first ones I built. Will most likely not make the cut and get replaced.
Tempted to run some 'qualifiers' when I have to whittle down to the ones that will make the cut.

Still need to download Photoshop in order to make custom skins, and better splashes.
I did try and make a splash but I don't like it very much.

your designs remind me of Merrick (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,10823.0.html)s style of bot building (hopefully you wont PMS ragequit as he did). especially how they look like they were made by someone who just picked up DSL.

but in all honesty i just dont like 1/2 of the bots. the terrorhurtz-lookalike and the brown spikestrip/iron rammer looks like they have promise though

EDIT- apart from the extender look and the fact that its about 50 kg underweight, Biovore actually looks cool

Scrolled through that thread. I can see what you mean, tampon change needed.  :popcorn

I like to think my bots aren't as simple as that though. I'll continue posting in here, shall I? Instead of making another thread in showcases for basically the same thing?

(Thanks for the Biovore feedback. I couldn't quite work out an effect for the sort of clamp style that worked with the axes, so extenders it is. At least it'll look cool when they fall off.)

it was mostly the sawbot that reminded me of merricks bot "trash"

i would suggest that you start a showcase. i mean, the showcase section isnt there for nothing.

yeah bro you need to make a showcase

if you did that with stock DSL decals and edges and whatnot in the paint lab, then that's pretty freakin' stellar.

Not exactly. The chevron stripe thing isn't stock DSL decals. Not sure where it's from, but I downloaded all the textures, decals, etc that I found on the front page of the website.

Yeah, that's what I meant by "whatnot"

Ooooh. I got confused as it wasn't technically 'stock' DSL decals.

Looking though my bots I've realised I've made way too much use of that chevron stripe. May have to start redoing some of them.  :rage
