Title: RoboLeague
Post by: Vertigo on June 08, 2011, 11:43:10 AM
Don't worry, it won't start for a while! Atleast not untill I've released SkAI High

But since I'm Major League now, I thought I'd go for something a little bigger than RA2TC

ROBOLEAGUE

The idea is to make a tourney EXACTLY as we run it IRL (well, for the FW UK champs anyway)
So the format would be as follows:
Three qualifying fights (so every bot gets atleast 3 fights), 3 bots in each:
 - 4 points for a knockout
 - 3 points for a WBP (Win By Points)
 - 2 points for second
 - 1 point for third
 - 0 points for disqualification
Top scorers go into the Final 12 (may have to run a few melee's to decide between bots on the same points)
Yeah, we have the top 10 IRL, but it has to be Final 12 since I can't run a losers melee with 5 bots in
So, 6 fights
Then 3 fights
Three way losers melee
2 Semifinals
1 3rd Place Play Off
1 Grand Final
As well as all that, 8 bots that didn't make the Final 12 go into the Annihil8or, I will choose the bots
I will choose on the basis of making it as interesting as possible, not neccesarily the best bots, but a wide range of bot types
This is only for a bit of fun, like we do IRL

Rules:
1) Stock MW
2) No losers bracket
3) No BFE/AAM/ZeroG/Nasty Pickle etc.
4) Other ingame glitches are allowed
5) Realistic rule does not apply
6) No custom components, cheatbot2 not allowed, but the 140cm extender is allowed
7) Replica Wars Arena
8) Multibots not allowed

This is where it gets weird:
9) A havok results in an instant loss, if it affects other bots in the match, it will be restarted without the havok'ed bot, in qualifying, 0 points is awarded
10) Match time is one minute, (otherwise its too easy to get 4 points in qualifying)
11) You can enter up to 3 bots, upon certain regulations:
      - Only your first bot will be AI'd for you, if you can't AI, you can't enter more than one bot, if a bot is sent past your one AI'd                                                       limit without working AI, then it will be disqualified
      - Only one of your bots can be a Popup/Horizontal Spinner
      - Bots are divided into the following categories:
Popup, Spinner, Flipper, Hammer, SNS, Crawler, Rammer/Wammer/Poker
These designs can only be used once, one on each bot
Hybrids are allowed, and fall under the category of the weapon which most weight is used on, SNSNS fall under SNS however
      - Each of your entries can only be sent 3 days after the last one, not bothered about what time in the day it is sent
12) My rules of controlled movement: All bots, (bar crawlers) must have two wheels which move the bot!
IRL, one wheel movement is classed as immobile (in the UK anyway)

Other Rules:
13) One update ONLY, this is not per bot, per entrant, and can only be used on one bot, use it wisely
14) I will not reserve spots, send a bot if you want to enter!

Prizes:
One is given to the winner, runner up & annihil8or winner
The winner is also given an extra bot allowance in the next tourney, which I can AI for them

Right, tell me if I've missed anything :D

Please answer the poll seriously, it will determine how many spots are available

I like the sound of this. =] I might give this a crack if I can put together a decent team.

Title: Re: Vertigo's Next Tourney!
Post by: Vertigo on June 08, 2011, 12:35:31 PM
I was thinking of 45 spots

Just remembered this rule:
Quote
- Each of your entries can only be sent 3 days after the last one, not bothered about what time in the day it is sent
So if you send your bot on a Monday, your next bot cannot be sent until the Thursday
This is to allow everyone a chance to get their bot in
Can't see anyone having a problem with this?

So I probably wont enter. Sorry, vert.

Yes you can only enter either a Popup or a HS (you don't have to enter either)
However, you can enter a popup and VS

Anyways, unless someone can come up with something better, RoboLeague it is!

Not astoundingly easy. It'd prolly be easier to make a new arena with a pit.

I just thought if it weren't to hard, somebody someone could put a pit on the 4th starting point

Well played, SD.

I think I'll enter, but I'm worried about your modified havok restart rule. I realize it's to prevent bots that are just spinning walls of weaponry, but in my experience, havok explosions can happen fairly randomly to any bot. I'd leave a little room for "fluke" havoks for bots that normally would not go berserk, just to be fair.
Title: Re: RoboLeague
Post by: Somebody on June 08, 2011, 11:30:41 PM
Like for example, a rammer can havok when ramming an HS. It happens fairly regularly, and the rammer would normally not havok. and generally is a fairly stable design.

The rule isn't perfect, no, but there aren't that many good builders that cannot put together a basic AI
Title: Re: RoboLeague
Post by: NFX on June 11, 2011, 03:34:47 PM
That doesn't really take into account time contraints and such. For instance, someone might have the time to put together three bots, or just enough to bring up three older designs, but not have time to write a specific AI for each one.
Title: Re: RoboLeague
Post by: Clickbeetle on June 15, 2011, 09:05:35 PM
I don't see a problem with the multiple entries rule.  By far the greatest time investment in bot building is making the bot.  Making the AI takes like 20 minutes at the very most, often less, as long as you don't need a custom py.  If you have time to build a bot, then you have time to AI it.

Plus, it's only fair for people who put in the time to AI their own bots to have an advantage, since it eases Vertigo's work load and helps get the tourney up and running faster.

And it's a just plain fun rule.  It should create a good diversity of bot types.

Anyone else have a problem with the havok rules?

I'll probably open signups in a few weeks time, letting you guys know so that you can prepare you're teams
I'm assuming quite a few of you will want to send your first entry rather quickly due to the 3 day gap rule :P
Title: Re: RoboLeague

Havok rules look fine.  Harsh, but that's OK with me.

      - Bots are divided into the following categories:
Popup, Spinner, Flipper, Hammer, SNS, Crawler, Juggler, Rammer/Wammer/Poker
These designs can only be used once, one on each bot

Wait, so do HS, VS, and FS all fall under "Spinner"?  So you couldn't enter a VS and a HS?

If so, jugglers should count as spinners too.
