Title: Robo Zone 2 discussion
Post by: ianh05 on July 26, 2010, 05:11:29 AM
hey guys i thought i would start up a robo zone 2 topic to discuss what sort of challenges you would like to see in the second series. I'm also after some good DSL builders to help me with team robo zone (the house robots)... that's right robo zone 2 will be DSL LW's.

challenges:

- Beat the Box:
Your robot faces a well defended box to test your robots offense.

- Survival:
Your robot will face a powerful heavyweight to see how well defended your bot is.

- 2 on 1:
Your robot faces 2 beetleweights to test your robots overall design and weight management.

- Sumo Challenge:
Your robot will face a robot that weighs about 275kgs and has a lot of pushing power and a decent wedge on the flextop arena to test your robots steering, pushing power and wedge.

- Robo Zone 2 Final:
this series will also feature the debut of the Robo Zone Arena, a custom arena in which the top 4 placed robots will face off at the end to decide the winner. the 4th and 3rd place robots at the end of the challenges will start the match, 30 seconds later the 2nd place robot will join in and finally after another 30 seconds the 1st placed robot at the end of the challenges will join in the battle.

Rules:

1. Standard DSL (2.1) LW's.
2. Standard DSL realistic rules apply.
3. All bot building is to be done in the bot lab (No AAM, BFE Etc.)
4. I will Discard the match recordings containing Havoks and keep/post the 1st clean battle.
5. No Stacking Allowed (No eFFe, axle, snapper glitches Etc.) unless it sticks to the realistic rule.
6. No Narmor or any type of invincible armor.
7. Multi-bots are allowed up to a combined weight of 249kgs.
8. You should AI your own entry. I'm able to AI basic spinners and rammers, I can AI popups if you have already placed the smartzone. By getting me to AI you understand that your bot may not perform as well as you would have hoped.
9. Your Robot must have weapons (no Pure flippers, Wedges or pushers allowed).
10. All Robots must have at least 2 wheel drive and show controlled movement at all times.
11. No nasty pickles, Bumble bots, Bumble Bees or Crawlers allowed.

12. Arena List:
for 2 on 1 - Small Arena (H Off obviously)
for Sumo - flextop arena (H Off)
for Beat the Box - Small Arena (H Off)
for Survival - Combat Arena (H Off)
for Robo Zone 2 Final - Robo Zone Arena (H On)

13. Time limits:
for 2 on 1 - 2 minutes.
for Sumo - 1 minute.
for Beat the Box - 1 minute.
for Survival - 1 minute.
for Robo Zone 2 Final - 3 Minutes.

14. Specified challenge rules/scoring:

2 on 1 - The fastest win scores the most amount of points, the fastest loss scores the least.
           - Draws will be decided by in game scores.
           - If you enter a Multi-bot and 1 gets defeated it's score will still count should it end in a draw.

Sumo - The fastest win scores the most amount of points, the fastest loss scores the least.
          - Draws will be decided by in game scores.
          - Only one Multi-bot needs to be pushed off the tabletop for them to lose.

Beat the Box - Fastest KO of the Box will earn max points.
                     - Failure to knock out the Box will have your score decide your rank for the challenge.

Survival - The fastest win scores the most amount of points, the fastest loss scores the least.
              - If you enter a multi-bot both must be KO'd.
              - Draws will be decided by in game scores.

Robo Zone 2 Final - The 4th and 3rd ranked robots after all other challenges are completed will start the match.
                             - 2nd place after the challenges will join the match after 30 seconds by being released from a caged off area.
                             - 1st place after the challenges will join the match 30 seconds after 2nd place is released.

15: Awards/Prizes.

Robo Zone Final Arena:

Stock AI Mini's:

Winner of Final - Robo Zone Final arena and all 5 Mini's
2nd place in Final - 4 Mini's of your choice.
3rd and 4th place in final - 3 Mini's of your choice.
1st place in any Event - 2 Mini's of your choice.

You may only win one Award, that being the bigger one.

16: Updates.

I will Allow 10 to 15 entries and will allow only 1 change if it's necessary for example, if your bot won't work without the change I will allow it other then that you may not change or upgrade your entry.

nah, people want to see lots of parts flying off it and it should have an equal amount of defense on all sides.. it also has to have controlled movement to avoid immobility

I'll enter, I you could use one of the HBFS entries for the box, maybe GF93's, it looks like a box

For the BW's you could use 2 off the Exchange (with permission of course)

and the HW could be from NAR AI

I have a quite speedy killer HW, goes by the name of Eggbeater.

Here it is:

If you want it, I'll tweak the wedge to make it good and send it over.

Post by: ianh05 on July 26, 2010, 10:07:33 AM
for the heavyweight it should be dominating but beatable and have different types of weapons, a VS/HS/Rammer hybrid should work well as long as it has weak points such as a bad wedge or no side defense etc.

you can PM me your possible house robots and i will check them out.

the box doesn't need to be beetleweight or lightweight :P the weight doesn't matter for the box it just needs to be equally defended on all sides (top and bottom included) and beater bars do damage :O

Thoughts on an OOTA challenge where the LW's face a powerful flipper to see who can last the longest in a low wall arena?
Title: Re: Robo Zone 2 discussion
Post by: Somebody on August 05, 2010, 07:33:25 AM
That would turn out to just be who gets lucky. There isn't much you can do as a LW against that.
Title: Re: Robo Zone 2 discussion
Post by: JoeBlo on August 05, 2010, 10:11:44 AM
I agree ^^

if the competition was a heavier class people could do something like RY3NO to waste time in the match against the flipper but with lightweigths you cant really adapt them for all

guys i still need at least 1 more challenge, I really want it to be a test of the robots drive and or wedges.

if I could make Tilt a little more fair by just having a pushy LW be good enough?

I'm going to slightly change up the Tilt Challenge, this time it will be called the Sumo challenge.

- tabletop arena with the "tilting" off.
- the team Robo Zone robot will just be a pushy bot around 275kgs (slightly heavier then all entrants.)

this way the control, pushing power and wedge of your robots will be tested.

If anyone wishes to help build Team Robo Zone PM me a screenshot and info. I will try and get around to building DSL BW's for the 2 on 1 challenge soon.

One day bump?I like the bot but the wheels could use more protection.
Title: Re: Robo Zone 2 discussion
Post by: ianh05 on August 10, 2010, 11:29:23 PM
2 day bump from where I am (Aus). bit hard to give the wheels more protection then that with the weight limit and it's a part of a team which means it has like a 50% chance to not be targeted at the start of the fight which means less likely to get flanked at any point in the match.

the other BW will probably be a VS.

DSL realistic rules, were meant to be no glitches/stacking at least that's what i thought. and Joe you don't need to worry about the Box's fight-ability, just make it awesome to look at when it's being beaten up on  :p .
Title: Re: Robo Zone 2 discussion

I quote from the Beetlebros website:

"All tournaments using the DSL mod are run with the realistic rule. This rule does not apply to stock tournaments unless otherwise specified. The realistic rule states, in general terms, that your bot must be built realistically (able to work in real life). More specifically,

No component can intersect another component that could not have a slot cut in it in real life.
This is easier to understand with an example. Suppose your bot has a spinning blade. A stationary armor plate can have a slot cut in it in real life, so it is allowable for the blade to pass through such an armor plate. However, you can't cut a slot in a wheel, since wheels spin. So if the blade passed through the bot's wheels, the bot wouldn't be allowed. Batteries and motors also can't have slots cut in them, so intersecting these components is also not allowed. Finally, the blade could not completely bisect (cut in two) the bot, since if you cut a slot all the way through in real life, it would just fall apart.

No stacking of batteries or air tanks is allowed.
This is a corollary of point 1, but is somewhat less intuitive.

No chaining of motors is allowed.
Judging realism is mostly a subjective assessment and, as such, there is some tolerance associated with these rules. It is allowable if two moving components are only very slightly intersecting, and if you have a reasonable explanation for how your design could be built in real life, it might be allowed even if it violates some of the above rules."

Of course, you can do your own rules if you like.

if it was allowed just think of the fuss it would cause. you would have people against it saying it's a glitch and shouldn't be allowed then you would have others saying it should be because it's realistic  :rage .

I would prefer no fuss in the tournaments I host.

anyways, here is the heavyweight your lws will face in the survival challenge:

nothing that OP, could even get beaten.. who knows?  :gawe: (has 2 casters on the bottom, for pesky popups). All we need now is the arena and the box.

If these are NPC fasts there is a slight chance a popup gets under, rips off both motors and wins by immobility.

The arena request can be found here (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,4399.msg189425.html#msg189425).

I'm still able to work on it if everyone else is busy but we definitely need to figure out who is working on what so that it gets done.

I haven't heard from Madiaba yet..

my plan was to construct the GMF first and give it to you to add your python (I didnt know how to keep caged bots stationary) but I lost my progress now so thats me out..

Serge said he would do it also.. again I haven't heard from him yet regarding process..

so its really just finding out what those 2 have done on it ^^^

almost 1 month since any word on well...anything. lack of interest has dropped this discussion to page 2.

I'm going to have to cancel this, it's a shame that people don't want to see a different style of tournament then the usual elimination style 1v1 or 2v2 tournaments. I have been waiting the past month for someone to show interest but it just hasn't happened.

the effort i put into the house robots (Team robo zone) and general planning has left me unable to find the interest to play the game now. Not sure if/when I will return but good luck with everything.

I'm going to have to cancel this,

Are you really going to or must we convince you by numerous "NONO IANH YOU ARE LIKED HERE PLEASE DON'T CANCEL ROBO ZONE 2 IT'S AWESOME"-style posts ?

I'm really going to have to as I have lost interest in the game, I was really looking forward to see the robo zone arena in action for over a year, maybe 2 years and now it looks like i won't get to see it. However I would love to see the work on the arena continue because it could make for a really cool arena for different tournaments that have 4 robots active at the same time.

i once saw him on Champions Online.

bingo, we have a winner. I also play SC2 on occasions, sometimes on the NA/LA region.

aww.. the construction crew are working at it.. shame to not see it press on

No need to stop working on the arena, I may return one day or maybe the community would like it to be released for use in other tournaments or just to play around with against AI.

Well that sucks. You can't really expect too much chatter in a discussion thread once the rules are ironed out though. If you had given it the green tick it might've gotten voted through earlier though. (Then I would have lost though D:)
