Title: Mechapocalypse Discussion

Okay, so I'm kinda starting to get the hang of modding, namely reskinning arenas, and I also managed to find WeGame [albeit by accident], which I've been testing out with RA2. With this in mind, I reckon I'm about ready to have a shot at a tournament. Only limitation is that I'm not that good at AI'ing, but thankfully Gazea2's very kindly volunteered to help me with the AI.

The idea is that it's kinda set in some sort of of post-nuclear future, and resources are scarce, so people can only find so many bits to build robots with. With this in mind, there will be a restriction on the number of components you can use on your bot.

Here's what the arena'll look like:

Plus first draft of the rules:

-DSL 2.1 MW
-Maximum 20 components. That's it. This inculdes everything. =D
-Your robot must be able to show controlled movement. Piston Fliers and Bumble Balls are therefore out.
-No cheatbot2, custom components, AI components, BFE, AAM, et cetera.
-All building must be done in the Bot Lab.
-Realistic rule applies, though you can glitch within it.
-No invincible armour, or cheaty wedges (MCB, Typhoon flag, etc.)
-No multibots, crawlers, or flail spinners either. I don't want havok bombs everywhere.
-One havok restart per match, and three for the whole tournament. Deal with it.
-Matches will be 2 minutes in a best of 3 rounds style.
-16 places, and there will be a loser's bracket. Yay. Winners & Loser's bracket champions will fight each other in the grand final, loser's bracket runner-up will receive 3rd place.
-Once the 16 places are filled, you'll have a week to send me any updates, as long as you don't massively change the bot. Swapping irons for razors, for instance, would be fine, but turning a popup into a rammer probably isn't. Adding more components is a kinda grey area here, more weapons on a rack seems fine, adding new wedges or drive motors probably isn't.

I was also planning to wait for the poll after next, to let some of the other tournaments through. ;)

I'd count the components on SnSnSnSnS 4 for this, but I'm not going to bother because of the arena. I may enter something else.

I want to enter this. When will you post the component lists?

if you haven't already thought about it, I suggest using apanx bot export since it tells you the number of components on the robot

I'll try this, sounds fun.

I normally just count them on the bot file, but this could be useful. Thanks, Joe. =)

Does the component count include batteries?

I'll have a go.
I think a VS or a Sawbot would be best, sawbot especially considering the low component usage. HS might work but would be average.

Yes it does. =]

20 components limit ? Not going to be easy...

We can already remove 4 for the drive (more or less would be foolish), 3 MINIMUM for the Power components... that makes no popups, no jugglers, no razor spam, what else ?

Heh. I already have an idea for this but unsure :P

I think he just means 20 components overall (any ones)
if you want a components list come over to the dark side my tournament

anyway this sounds fun

^Yeah. I didn't see it when it said about 20 components. >_<

No MCB? They don't work half the time :(.
I'll gonna Piston Rammer for this one.
Oh nvmd just built a bot that works nicely. Anyone want to see?

lol.
I was thinkin about a kind of Lego tourney today. Like everyone can only use the same components limited with a number like 2 irons 6 ants ...
Is that how this works?

I wasn't planning on restricting what components you can use in this tourney, although I might try that at some point in the future. =)

Why would you use 3 power components?  This is one of those incidences where those large batteries aren't so bad.

2 ants, 1 AX2550.

And as you know, in electotal, ants pwn all the other batteries.

it will probably be hammer spinners central :P since spin motors require less power then bursts and hammers are strong weapons for a low component count

either that or lots of rammers :P

this tourney may actually work well, bringing now bots to light that otherwise may never have been build.

I'm slightly worried about rammers but the bot I've already built is perfect against spinners. See my showcase.

I bet you could still make a decent popup or juggler if you really tried.  It would just need to be a little different than the current standard (hecko, chassis wedge!).  Just like the standard razor flail shell spinner won't work; you will need to use hammers.  Razor spam, however, definitely won't work.

I like this idea.  It seems to me that it will actually produce more realistic designs, since you will want to attach as much stuff to the baseplate as possible (to limit extender work) and use fewer, heavier weapons.  Maybe even fewer, heavier batteries.

Okay, sit rep,  I've managed to sort out the problem with Halestorm 5's AI, and I reckon I could AI most of the potential entries myself now. I'll have a chat with Gazea2 about the AI'ing situation.

Also, the only prize I can come up with at the moment is the arena. =P

I got a VS idea, if I'm calculating right it should have 18 components.

*goes to build*

some here, but i ended up with 20 components... still need to do some editing as... it goes to fast for its own good.

This seems to have more interest than I thought it would do. =) Which is good.

Having quite a big workload at uni at the moment, however, so I might wait until the poll after next until I give this the green tick.

Okay, this tournament is receiving the GREEN TICK, and will proceed to the poll for the Signups Stage. I think I've got everything sorted out for it, and I hope to make this tourney the best I can. =D

Muhahaha, I got a bot for this... exactly 20 components and it counters the three bot types I think will be most common in this tournament fairly reliably.  (Those are HS, VS, and rammers.)  And as an added bonus, it looks cool.

Hope this goes through next poll... there are a LOT of tournaments with green ticks.

I have another counter bot I made about an hour ago...
oh and would two big orange bats and a battlepack be able to run 2 small JXs and 2 npcfasts?

I'm starting to like this. =D From the sounds of it, there's going to be a lot of robots built to counter other robot types. Should make for interesting brackets.
