Title: Ironclash - Discussion
Post by: cephalopod on July 28, 2015, 02:22:12 PM
(https://i.gyazo.com/e6558e2586e57656de4e6943ceb0c7a3.png)

No meme tournament for now, sorry :)

Building Rules
-Ironforge v1.1
-Middleweight (up to 200kg, with 4 ballasts allowed on top of this for no cost)
-Standard (DSL-S) realism (You can enter an IRL bot but you will more than likely be at a large disadvantage)
-Multibots allowed to a maximum of 2.
-No cheatbot2 or custom components.
-No out of botlab editing whatsoever.
-Bots must show controlled movement.
-No SnS or bots utilizing meltybrain.
Tournament Guidelines
-Unlimited slots, but 1 entry per person.
-Signups will be open for 1 week and no longer. Entries sent before signups open will be rejected.
-Entries cannot be updated, unless they are rejected for breaking rules, in which case they have 1 chance to fix before disqualification.
-I can AI for you but it will be the most basic line - it will move in the right way and use it's weapons, nothing more.
Battle Rules
-3 minute matches in the -------- arena (TBD)
-Single elimination bracket
-1 restart per bot per match for any match-affecting Havok explosion - any more and the bot will be disqualified.
-I will enter. Entry TBD.

Thoughts?

It would be good to have a standard Ironforge tourney.
What's with the silly old no 1WD rule?

Seems fair, but pretty basic.  But i think basic is good.  Too bad i have no clue how to build in IF or i would join.

Seems simple enough, I will try to enter. You think you can make a poll for the arena or no?

Sure, will do.
This was going to be RIP5 but I'm fed up of the RIP name so yeah, that might explain the simplicity. It's an old school tournament in a new mod.

yes please we need more IF tourneys

ban sns or at least meltybrain please, AI in this game cannot handle them

I've been trying to think of a fair way to balance them out - after all, Mr AS's SnS dominated RIP4. Perhaps a low walled arena could be a solution?

if you won't ban all sns (which would be great) please ban homing/flanking sns like the ones in the IF AI, other bots absolutely cannot deal with them. The ra2 AI is too dumb to rush down a flanking target. it just sits in place and turns to try to face it while the sns gets free hits in. it won't even attack. There is not a single type of bot that can counter it. even superflat popups are not ideal.

I added a poll regarding SnS. In the interests of transparency, I voted to ban them as I agree with Reier.

(Also in the interests of transparency, the results of the poll may not represent my end choice for the rules.)

thanks for considering

If we're banning melty-brain. Can we allow 1WD like this bot?
Title: Re: Ironclash - Discussion
Post by: Reier on July 28, 2015, 04:30:04 PM
the reason meltybrain is cheap is because it exploits the other ai's lack of ability: it can move and removes the other bot's ability to do so.
the thing for other 1wd bots though is even if they're KIND of controlled movement it's a fine line and could easily fall into crawler territory. you just give up a motor/controllability for more weapons. i personally think 2wd should almost always be the minimum. not necessarily on AWs but that's the exception.

i fail to see why SnS should be banned. SnS aren't invulnerable.

Removing 1WD bots/uncontrolled movement bots is all good, however, even though no one will seriously enter an 1WD bot in a MW tourney.

What is meltybrain?

Post by: cephalopod on July 29, 2015, 04:27:20 PM
The poll has spoken and SnS in general will be banned, along with any bot utilizing meltybrain tactics (meltybrain is when an SnS doesn't just Sit n Spin but Move Scarily Towards You n Spin).
I'll add another poll after I've done a few things to decide the arena choice.

Definitively going to enter, if i can find something to build that is, if there are any suggestions i'll welcome them with open arms

whats the difference between sns and thwacker?
Title: Re: Ironclash - Discussion
Post by: cephalopod on July 30, 2015, 10:32:19 AM
Nothing really. Thwacks tend to have only 1 arm though. I'm not sure on where the rules would lie for a thwack currently.

Throwing my weight behind The Bahamas arena (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=120) - I think it should have a tourney. But at the end of the day I don't really mind too much. :)

you should use the octagon its really fair and balanced.

-_- dude theres pits everywhere and flippers send you into space with wheatly, if you wanted an arena with a pit, i think the dsl robot wars arena would be best cause the ai dont know theres a pit button so it could make the match more fair. the metal skull arena would work as well but i guess we will just have to wait and see what the polls tell us...

I thought you wanted to enter a thwack? :P
(also Playzooki was joking)

(k)
nah i was just curious because thwackers and sns just seem indistinguishable from each other =p
was gonna make a drill bot but made it a poker due to weight and a lack of casters (darn it whale!)
Title: Re: Ironclash - Discussion
Post by: Reier on July 30, 2015, 02:12:18 PM
if by drill bot you mean like this, (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/62458hcb.png) you don't really need casters.
Honestly you don't really need casters at all in ra2

Casters are good for armor on the front of wedges and the bottom of most HS and VS.

I'd say that the kenzorg remake needs some love, but the ring arena is probably the best.

yeah I meant in ironforge though

yeah actually the kenzorg would be fun

Kenzorg was another I thought of. Cool arena.

If we wanna talk about possible arenas that have almost never been in any tournament to date, how about the ELBITE Arena (http://beetlebros.gametechmods.com/files/elbite.zip). While it was made for one person's tournament, but it's almost never been used since. If my memory serves right, that arena has only appeared in a total of three tournaments after the original tournament or it expired and of those three, it was seen once out of those three times. It was only used for showing it's name twice as it never made an appearance otherwise in an actual fight. I feel it's a bit unappreciated and underused. I feel it's a pretty fun arena.

I'd say that the kenzorg remake needs some love, but the ring arena is probably the best.
I agree. Keznorg would be fun as well, but with hazards on? If so, then it's not so much fun since playing in that is practically impossible since it crashes with every time a couple components fly off or a strong hit collides with the opponent. There was a good reason I kept Hazards off for that arena in BTTB Revamped.

Yeah elbite's another good shout (Though I wish to indicate my support is still fully behind bahamas :P)

elbite's gonna need some editing to make the tesla more viable, it barely does any damage to ironforge armors

Im not joking, my vote goes to the octagon.

I was planning on getting round to this after the mod release but since work is continuing on it for the foreseeable future, I'm gonna move this over to Inactive. If anyone wants to take over, give me a shout.

aw I was looking forward to this
I wouldn't mind hosting something like this but I cannot say how much time I'll have so I don't think I will for the moment. I'll think about it though but don't hold your breath.

If I get some time I'll revive it but honestly as RA2 projects go, RWRA2 is a priority and uni is my main life priority so I can't do everything at once. Sorry man.
