Title: Friendship/Rival Rumble - SBV
Post by: Thrackerzod on May 20, 2016, 09:10:51 PM
Surprise!

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/19083friendship rumble.png)

(disclaimer: this was okayed by Yugitom before the tournament began)

WHAT'S CHANGED:
You're not actually rivals!  You're teammates!  Hooray!
This will be a standard single-elimination tournament between the 8 different teams.  We're still in the Ring Arena, but I've edited the starting points slightly.

why didn't you tell me i could've fixed the arena skin so it matched the new logo

Ah well, at least this gives S_M a slight chance... or at least it would be if we weren't against the popups.

Then why is it still called Rival rumble in the SBV

*Proud member of Team Popup since 2009 (seriously, I've been obsessed since around then)* Seems I missed this. Lol anyway GL all. First pure DSL tourney, so I'm totally screwed. :P

Well in theory my bot can beat popups...

i'm going to be the party pooper :

-we kinda built partly to counter the opposite bot type, now we are supposed to fight with them ? this invalidates quite a bit of our building
-this has always been a rival thing, now it's just changed completely without asking people
-i fully understand that this robot behavior problem is a real problem and it needs to be fixed (i do not mind changes when they are necessary) but then change the arena to something similar that doesn't have the rushing problem, not the whole gimmick. And ask entrants for ideas if you change the arena : they're the ones concerned about this.
-it's changed at the last minute when everyone entered their bots which makes it infuriating.

yeah so, that change is BS. I'm just saying. I understand F'ing up rulesets is a Thrackerzod thing, but that's funny up to a point.

I am done with my rant now, now to the bots...

Flaming euthanasia :

Conducting Chicken : Surprisingly it is average. Although, entering a chicken drill is really hard-mode because chicken drills do generally no damage, use a lot of power and weight, and may be cool (and noisy) but are generally weak competitively.

Carbon Dragon : I really hate flying guillotines.
Two Scarves : It's pretty damn cool. I'm not sure this hammer is the best choice for a clamp, however.

Lucius the Eternal : I am teamed with a pink and Slaaneshi bot ? Truly, this is an affront to my manliness ! Apart from that... I feel that it is not long enough (which is clearly a flaw for a slaaneshi poker of all Freudian things) and that it is going to be inverted easily. Also, lots of weight for side guards (may be necessary however) and I'm not quite sure those wheelguards are going to work, mostly due to being too small.
Blade Assault: Pretty good as far as pokers go. The popups, however, are scaring me.

Mister Smash Smash Bash-Kun! : Apart from the poor choice of name, this is a hammer, a.k.a. tournament hard mode. I still don't like how people are starting to use ant blades as flailing weapons, but that's how the metagame appears to be set up, unfortunately. Still, let's see how far it goes.

Nyoom : Favorite bot so far ! The clamp part appears somewhat weak, however.

Old Man Farts : Scary-looking, especially with no HS in the tournament. Not quite sure what's up with this multiextender setup however.

Who Needs Research : Strange wedge. Also it's fast as hell, probably too much for a popup, and will probably end up tossing opponents out of the arena ala Rage III. Or itself. Or both ! Anyways, this will be entertaining to watch.

A8ER : A solid poker, for sure. I would like to see this one fight mine 1v1 and I'm not quite sure who will win. There are some fragile parts but they appear decently protected.

literally just reVolution but in DSL : Another bot type that I hate. Then again, it's not the builder's fault.

Dinkus Prime : Very fast. Maybe a little too fast ? Armor setup is meh. Although that's DSL 2.2 so there's a change. Also those single point normals on pokers are going to harm things, I feel.

Night Man : Looks pretty well built, then again Gauche had stock to practice with so he has solid bases as a DSL builder. However, it looks... strange ? Doesn't appear invertible, but it may be just an invertible wedge...

Ear Worm : A strange wammer-shaped chicken drill. Still, as far as chicken drills go, this one is quite good. Will depend on wedge.

5x: ...What. Normally I like hybrids, but sloppy ones like that are not going to go far. Also it's s l o w, which is not good for a gut ripper.

That's the whole point of the gimmick.

-this has always been a rival thing, now it's just changed completely without asking people
If he asked people, the gimmick would have been spoiled.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this. He didn't change the gimmick on a whim, it was planned. All he did was change the starting points to better suit tag matches. He didn't change the gimmick based on rushing because there would have only been two robots fighting each other, anyway.

-it's changed at the last minute when everyone entered their bots which makes it infuriating.
Again, the whole point of the tournament.

Anyway, I love the good majority of the bots in this tournament! Can't wait to see some videos of them.

Well nary, I did the cheeky thing and analyzed your bot and specifically picked my weapons to last just a little longer than yours.

It *should* be just as good as your bot, sans the length because reasons.

Thanks yugi, you explained that way better than I would have.  But I would like to again point out that the "surprise change" had indeed been planned out since Day 1 of the tournament.

Yugi did a great job encouraging discussion without giving away the twist in the signups thread, by the way.  Thanks dude!

I wanted the first time you realized that something was up to be seeing the new logo. And don't worry RedAce, I fixed the arena skin already.

As you can probably guess, I do next to no research for my dsl/if bots (and I also don't roadtest), so if it can fight, I find myself satisfied. :)

Yeah, sorry about that.  :/

But anyway, editing not that bad, really the only thing I'd really improve is taking out those moments where nothing interesting is happening, rather than just speed it up.  That's really it though.

Yeah I'd just copy one of the TRFBDs in 123AI's binding lines, see if that stops it from being retarded.
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: Thrackerzod on June 02, 2016, 01:25:45 AM
It is using TRFBD.py.  Checking against another bot using that AI is a good idea though, donno why I didn't think of that.

While I'm fixing that, enjoy the final match of Round 1!  Can a clamp and a... whatever Squirrel_Monkey built take on two popups?  Do I really have to ask?

Oh and nice avatar of S_M and I.  Pretty creative, and I was scared originally considering what the others looked like.

All the team avatars were done by Pizzaguy2020; he did a great job with them.

And since we've now seen all of the avatars in the episodes, I'll go ahead and post them here:

Alright, so I'm running into a problem recording the next match.

Mr. AS's bot is too tall to be eliminated once it gets flipped out of the arena.  This means that RedAce and Squirrel_Monkey's bots still go after Mr. AS's, even though it's completely unreachable.  This leaves RedAce and Squirrel_Monkey wide open to attack, since they're just sitting there, trying to hit a bot that's under the arena.

Any idea how to fix this?
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: yugitom on June 03, 2016, 10:00:47 PM
I think that's just an issue with RA2 AI and you should have probably stuck with the first matches you recorded. Tbf, you could see it as a strategical perk that Mr AS's bot type has, something which allows his teammate to gain more advantage.
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: Mr. AS on June 03, 2016, 10:44:11 PM
For the record, I threw it together in something like 15 minutes specifically to counter Geice's poker. But hey, I'm fine with it basically being an aggro target while Geice backdoors the opponent.
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on June 04, 2016, 04:04:25 AM
I'm wondering how easy it is to raise the elimination region in the arena. Then again there's no reason why a bot that can't be eliminated should be illegal if the rules did not specify. Where exactly does it get stuck? It seems pretty silly to allow a bot to survive when fully out of the designated fighting region.
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: Thrackerzod on June 04, 2016, 10:34:58 AM
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/54865mbad sleep too late.png)

Then it can just drive around down there.  It can drive under the arena too - there's no collision on the walls since bots aren't supposed to be there.
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV
Post by: Squirrel_Monkey on June 04, 2016, 10:47:09 AM
I would count that as an arena bug tbh. I believe my not would do the same thing if it landed correctly.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to this.  Seems like the general consensus is to just record the match anyway, so I'll do that later today unless anyone has any better ideas.

I don't do modding but shouldn't it be quite easy to raise the elimination zone up a bit?
Title: Re: Friendship Rumble - SBV

I highly advise not editing the arena at this time ('this time' being after matches have already been conducted.) You'd be changing the way certain robots perform (I.e. Mr AS's bot) and you'd be changing the rules without permission. By all means, if you think you can make the case to change the arena, make the case.

I'd consider it fixing an arena bug rather than changing the rules.
I feel like it's an implied rule that bots are eliminated when they exit the arena.

Obviously you run this stuff so I'll defer to your judgement. Can't wait to see how derpy the match ends up.

You would think, but when I was looking at the arena file earlier (to change out the start points), I didn't notice anything clearly labeled "kill_zone" or whatever.  (The start points were labeled "startpoint" or something like that, so those were easy to swap.)

Yugi makes a good point though.

Code: [Select]
def Tick(self):
        for each in self.players:
            if plus.getLocation(each)[1] < 1.5:
                plus.eliminatePlayer(each)
Just increase the 1.5 to some higher value.

We can do a grudge match with the fixed arena if you don't want to change it now.

Not really. The 'rules' for when a robot should be eliminated are inherent in the arena itself. It's just what the arena does and doesn't allow. If Mr AS (or anyone building a robot) built their bot with the specific arena-out zone in mind, it would completely undermine their design. I know that, in this case, Mr AS didn't intend for that (even though he doesn't mind the unintentional result) but if I were to apply this to a future tournament with a similar problem, any given bot builder could have built their bot with the intention of interacting with the arena, so I'll try to keep my decisions consistent.

A match between the 2 chicken drills would be great

EDIT: Recorded for 30-40 minutes last night; these were the best matches I got:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_thHuhKw1Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_thHuhKw1Q)
Didn't do my usual editing stuff because lazy, plus I was kinda sick of seeing this match.

I'll put more effort into the other grudge matches.  Speaking of which, the ones I'm gonna do so far are:
A match between the 2 chicken drills would be great
Clamp rumble.  I'd pay to see that.

Not doing this because I donno how:
requesting a 4 way rumble with my bots, except with the starting points outside the arena

Honestly surprised I won thought for sure Night Man would outwedge me which he did but my bot seemed to get setup to the side enough to slide under multiple bots with rack based systems. Thank you for hosting this tournament thrack hope for more these were fun. PS who said a 5x hybrid wouldn't work lol.

I was surprised too, especially since your bot can't self-right.  Congratulations!

Thanks for your suggestions!  I'll still take match requests for some indeterminate period of time, so if you have one, say it soon!

Can I have the final done as a rematch once with me and no RedAce, and once with RedAce and not me?

Yeah i could not get reliable selfrighting with this design and prayed itd work i could of self righted if i was allowed to arc edit. Also on nars question id venture to guess those were heavy spikes not pole spikes they have normals but are durable and high damage. Last but not least id like to see if my design could handle carbon dragon i believe my design is one of the few that can damage it directly

I did one round with Carbon Dragon, one with Two Scarves, one with two Carbon Dragons, and one with two Two Scarveses:

There's a sweet barrel roll in round 3.

Mr. AS was wondering what the finale would have been like with only his bot, or only RedAce's bot competing.

Alright, thank you all for a great tournament.  I had a lot of fun with most of it.

Here's an awards thread, if you're into that kinda thing. (https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php?topic=19070.msg703172)
