Title: BOTW Discussion
Post by: Naryar on February 02, 2010, 06:54:46 AM
Bot of the Week

Basicaly like BOTM, but each week. I announce what you must build for each one (DSL or Stock, robot type and weight, etc) and you have 1 week to send a splash of your bot to me (by PM). I will then post the splashes, and you guys will vote (by posting). The winner will have their bot posted on the first post of the thread (i will create a single thread for it)

Rules - You must include weight and armor type in your splash.

The characteristics i want are creativity and building skill, so NO need to send me super-candyfied splashes. Hell, i should even not accept them... since BOTM is becoming Splash of the Month... (Still a decent splash is welcome

That is all. Now i know that this might compete with BOTM so i am asking ACAMS for permission.

just going to dig up an old quote

Sounds like a possible BOTM......please DO NOT make contests like BOTM.

he may have changed his opinion since but to me this seems a little to similar

for me its all or nothing in the graphics department :P not becasue I use that as a method of winning Im just a very artistic person.

I think that one week isn't enough. (if you want many entries...)

One week is more than enough. 2 days tops if I'm asked to whip up a quick bot. It's the skinning and the candifying that takes a lot more time. :P

I have thought about something like this for a while. I think that a main problem for BOTM is that people like me who have none, never have had, and never will have any artistic ability are discouraged from competing because I can`t compete with the candy joe makes. This is why we should have a BOTM or BOTW with no splashes allowed.

How about we open up the possibility of BOTM involving teamwork?

There are several members here that are very good at building bots, but not as good with skins and splashes.

Other members are on the opposite end of things... good with splashes and skins... but not as good building bots. *raises hand*

Wouldn't that be kinda cool?  If BOTM was awarded to a team of two people that worked together to win?

Does that mean my candy bots get a higher chance of winning now?  I sure hope so.

You have ALWAYS been able to team up on BOTM, and it has already been done before. A BOTM type tournament every week would go over like a turd on the punch bowl and will probably ruin such tournaments for a long time if it is attempted.

Can't you make this a Bot of the Month as well? Because it's a great idea, I for one think there should be a Bot of the Month contest where the bot speaks for itself.

or tell people not to vote on splashes ?

I mean why should I get penalized becasue how others vote ?

just a thought ?

ACAMS did set one BOTM as most original voting

There's no way to tell if people listened to ACAMS, that's my problem.  The splash is eye-catching and leaves a powerful first impression, but I'm not skilled at graphic design and what have you.  I'd prefer a botbuilding contest judged exclusively on the Robot Arena 2 portion, and the only way to do that for sure is to take the splash out of the equation.

I'm not saying that this should replace the regualar bot of the month, just run as a different thing

I dont use splashes as a method of winning im just artistic.. look at the winning robots I built Wrecking Crew - VC, Mystery Pyramid - SOW Pop Up. all pretty new or exciting designs.

all Im saying is it sounds kinda like a reason to blame for lack of winning ? I think the past 4 BOTM's were not won on splashes. To me splashes liven it up and make things more exciting and fun, screen grabbing a bot lab pic would be really boring. Like comparing HD TV to Black and White

While I don't think a great splash can snatch a win if the bot itself isn't exciting, I must agree that a bad splash can hurt an entry a lot.  An entry with something like a pure yellow background (I saw it before, but don't know who entered it), or one that camouflage the bot (Naryar's January Entry) will definitely hurt the amount of votes it receive.

I am not very good with splash myself, so I kept mine as simple as possible, and I would advise those with problems making splash to do the same.  Forget rather or not the background looks good.  Focus on using a background that won't drawing attention away from your bot.  A simple example is to

1.  Download a background with as little detail as possible, preferably one with cool colors and low contrast  (one that seems dull).
2.  Paste bots on.
3.  Try a few different backgrounds to see which one grabs the least attention from your bot.

Can i do it or not ?

How about BOTM with no splash at all?

Like this:

and then some stats if need be, like I would have to tell people this bot has 2 plows.

That is a good idea really.

Yes ! I was thinking in these lines as well... name, weight, armor notably.
