You wouldn't know anyway. And unless the entrant makes it blatantly obvious who they are (as in by re-entering), the judge won't know who they're judging. The only person who will know is me, so I might not even judge to make it fair.

Yes, the judges will be asked to be very brutally honest. If it or any factor of it wouldn't be built in real life, it's not getting in.
The judges will also submit entries, if they enter, first so that they get no advantage.

I might, but I'm not sure why I should. After all, if something is questionable on the IRL scale it won't get in.

Judges have been informed. Signups will open as soon as they have said they're still interested, and their entries (if they wish to enter) have been approved by the other judges, so get building.
Remember, the judges WILL BE BRUTAL. If there is ANY part of your robot that makes you even hesitate to think of a real bot that's done it, or a reason why they would do it, then don't enter it.

I like this idea of how the secret judges will determine if it's IRL or not. I plan on entering this thing.

Edit: Also Craaig, out of curiosity, would you allow interchangeable weapons in this tourney?

Well entering a joke bot in a small tournament is a stupid thing to do. If he actually puts effort into a non-jokebot and enters it, I'll have no problem. Flaming wasn't my intention.

I don't know, that's the judge's decision. And why risk it if you're worried about it being interpreted as that? Enter something you know will get accepted. ;)
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!

Have fun getting like 2 entries, IRL Regulations are ridiculously restrictive without the need of assholy judges
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!
Post by: cephalopod on May 21, 2014, 07:18:25 AM
Thanks for your vote of confidence. Personally I know this tournament will fill. It's encouraging people to build IRL as truly IRL and not sub-DSL-S, but if that's not your thing then whatever, don't enter. I know a lot of people are actually happy about the increased restrictions after lots of really not very IRL bots sneaking into tournaments recently in the name of trying to win - the judges won't be rejecting true IRL bots.
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!
Post by: Mystic2000 on May 21, 2014, 07:27:03 AM
well thing is that you enter a tourney, which means that you may at least a little bit win, which mean slight efficiency increasing, problem is as soon as a bot show signs of slight effenciency focusing, even if the bot itself it's perfectly valid, they'll ban it and classify it as cheap, gay, non-IRL
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!
Post by: cephalopod on May 21, 2014, 07:30:50 AM
They would if they were awful judges instructed to do that. But they're not. All their decisions go through me, and I have told them to approve serious, actually IRL bots, and any rejections must be given a reason.

People keep improving the efficiency of their IRL bots to a point they're not IRL and they're only doing it to win. I make bots that I like the look of, and that I think WOULD and COULD be built IRL, and I enter them just to see them in action. Who cares who wins? IRL is almost an artbot format in my eyes.

Basically, my point stands - if you don't like the premise, don't enter. I'm trying to make a tournament of truly IRL bots, for fun.

You shouldn't be focusing on efficiency. You should be focusing on functionality- then looks, and only then efficiency. If you want to do efficiency, that's what standard is for.

tl;dr you do IRL wrong.
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!
Post by: Mystic2000 on May 21, 2014, 08:39:29 AM
well the point of an tourney IRL or standard is winning, which means effenciency even if it's a tiny bit, it's UNAVOIDABLE if you want to win a tourney, now effeciency should not compromise realism or functionality, obviously
Title: Re: BOTTALLICA!
Post by: cephalopod on May 21, 2014, 08:44:08 AM
Like I said, why not enter just to see your creation actually work? I mean making something that looks awesome is one thing, but seeing it in action is another, and that's what it should be about. You really think people that built stuff like Ruf Ruf Dougal or Crushtacean, although not jokebots, thought they'd win Robot Wars?

The point of a standard tourney is winning, yes.

The point of an IRL one is having fun.

I'd rather not have you pick this up mainly because you don't have much of a handle on what IRL should be based on the bots that got entered into your tournament.

No offense, but that's just my opinion.

You don't have much of a handle on what IRL should be.
Gonna side with this.
Given that the robots are meant to be the most IRL of the most IRL I think you'd let a fair amount slip through.

Edit: Also I'm not sure that you'd pick the best judges either, they've got to be pretty critical for this.

i didnt want to allow levellers friend or homicidal intentions but did because i knew they would be paired with the best bots dragging them down
its just that tournament
also anti gravity is dangerously close to being dsl-s i regret letting him in

Reviving this, but switching stuff around a lot - no more judging panel (I will be judging HEAVILY though), and switching to Ironforge HW IRL - bots MAY NOT be more effective than real life counterparts, and must have a comparable real life bot.

You don't have to find a comparable bot, you just have to know that type of weapon system was used on a real life bot - eg no beater walls on pistons. It goes hand-in-hand with the bots must not be more effective than they would be in real life rule.

I don't understand why we have to find a real life comparable bot, that's isn't even IRL anymore that's just Replica.  I suggest changing it to

3) IRL rules - bots can ONLY be as effective as their hypothetical real life counterparts.

This is enough to ban all the beater walls and anything else that tries too hard in pushing the efficiency boundaries, without turning this into replica war.

That being said I will try to release v0.4 later today.

I restate, by comparable I don't mean 'the same'. It's not replicas, it's knowing a bot that has a similarly functioning weapon system. But seem as though it confuses most people for reasons I don't know I might remove it.
