Nah, I have built 3 flippers for this now. 1 Beta flipper, a 4bsg rear hinge and a 3bsg front hinge (prototype in showcase)

The Beta flipper does not resemble a Havok bot in any way. (The Havok line of bots stopped ages ago)

Flip em against spikes and into that large hammer thing. Its judged like RW was, kinda, not by points.

If it were points, I'd enter a HS that I built a few days ago.

Also, aluminium skirts cause minuscule damage.

Can you explain your judging system in more detail?  The link you provided uses a 33-point system whereas you use a 45-point.  I'm assuming that's because you'll be doing an equal-weight Damage, Aggression, and Strategy.  In which case, what is the criteria for strategy, it's not covered in the RFL guidelines?

Yes, yes I am.

Also, how does a 45 point system even work?

I'm assuming that it's the system they used in Battlebots - up to 5 points apiece for damage, aggression, and strategy using the zero-sum formula for awarding points.  However, we have not been given a solid definition of what consistutes "strategy."
Title: Re: BattleBots: Season 2
Post by: SteveM4 on July 12, 2011, 01:12:59 PM
If strategy means flinging a bot against the arena wall at 30mph, I have this sorted.

The 3bsg front-hinged flipper can OOTA from the middle of the DSL arena easy.

I defined strategy as which robot controlled the flow of the fight more and which one's attacks were more affective.

What? 15+15+15=45...?

SKBT's is what I was going for.

I defined strategy as which robot controlled the flow of the fight more and which one's attacks were more affective.

Make it an anonymous poll where people send their bots into Freeziez via pm. A la BOTM.
You know, so it doesn't turn into a popularity contest.

I'm in strong support of this.  Those 14 spaces are going to fill up FAST in a "first come first serve" setup, and this will also help us prevent arguments about "unrealistic"

JUDGING
- Fights will be judged on significant attacks.
- Fights will be judged on a spectrum of 45 points.
- Fights will be judged by me, TBA and TBA
- All other judging will follow the RFL Judging guidelines (http://botleague.net/doc/judging-guidelines_V3_1-0.pdf).
Please clarify further. You say you will follow RFL guidelines yet use a completely different system. This got me last time as I thought damage would count. In reality everything hinges on "significant attacks" (.i.e favouring fast bots).

True, however, I recall an incident where Nightmare broke a tooth, which then hit the ceiling and knocked a wrench(iirc) into the audience, and iirc, the tooth ended up either partially or completely out of the box, so it's within the realm of reason that a sufficient impact force would allow a bot to exit the roof of the arena. In RA2 land, the high wall could effectively simulate the difficulty of throwing a real bot through the real roof.

Possibly, but we're just talking in assumptions right now. Assumptions that go beyond RA2 and into the realm of real life. So unless we could sufficient evidence that it could happen in real life, we're just speaking assumptions.

Its not like I can replicate it in MW

Although I did flip SS out 3 consecutive times with Havok 18 (the one with 3 betas)

Title: Re: BattleBots: Season 2

To elaborate a bit; face spinner designs have certainly exist IRL. (http://robotcombat.com/images/bblv00/unknown17.jpg (http://robotcombat.com/images/bblv00/unknown17.jpg) "Grunion" competed at Battlebots 2.0 as a lightweight, it was more of a grinding disc, but still.) However, the very long extending spikes on GTG's design aren't realistic as they would most likely buckle quite quickly in battle in the real world, and to be fair it was just GTG taking advantage of how Ra2 works.
Title: Re: BattleBots: Season 2

The shell spinners were as cheap as, if not, more than Garv's bot. "Dog Collar" shell don't exist because it would be easier to use anything else.
Not only were they as flawed as Garv's FS, A person has also noted the fact that they were high tier designs. Both people who entered Sheck spinners didn't care for the IRL segment and are getting away with it for not being garvin.

Let me write it: Robots must look as close to IRL designs as possible. (No overabundance of weapons, unrealistic weapon sizes, disproportionate designs.)

Phrizbee grinded. Megabyte didn't look like a sawblade.
IMHO you are wrong. Dog Collar shell spinners are unrealisitic from a fundamental physical point. Each weapon does damage, and each weapon has knockback. With RA2 physics, it's like having a swarm of bees attacking, and each sting is a knife wound in terms of damage. It's illogical. at least a Weight on the end of a spinning thing is a tried and tested method IRL.
tl;dr Dog Collar SS should grind but they don't due to physics = unrealistic.

I think the skirt hinge should only be used on the sides of the bot. In a similar way to what the later versions of Panic Attack, Series 4 and onward. If you tried using such a wedge on the front of your bot, then it'd just get caught in the arena, and become damaged.

The skirt hinge lets do you exactly what Biohazard did, set a skirt at an angle and prevent it from flexing below a certain point(hard stops)
Title: Re: BattleBots: Season 2
Post by: dragonsteincole on July 16, 2011, 02:27:42 PM
My two cents on this discussion would be to add two rules, which may help with this tournament, and overall might help define 'IRL' building in Robot Arena 2.

- No skirt hinge/metal hinge may be attached at baseplate level - i.e the component must be raised off the baseplate.
- Any flipping device attached to a burst motor is to be used only for flipping/self-righting purposes.

First negates using them for wedges whilst still allowing them to be used for side skirts, much like Biohazard/Panic Attack/MikeNCR's demonstrated bots. And the second still allows the use of metal skirts, but they must be functional to the robot.

I would suggest the tread bonus be lowered to 60kg.  With 100kg bonus Heavy Tread will only cost 10kg each.  Which is really broken with it's 1.5 tracking and 12000 HP.  And can you be a bit more specific about the difference between crawlers and walkers?  Either way I think 800kg is too much since that is like a free drive system plus 600kg worth to build the rest of the bot with.  600kg will be more sensible.

I was entering a horizontal spinner this time, so I am safe from the rules.

You've basically banned flippers.

Great thing i was planning on entering a flipper.

Thanks a lot.

He's basically not, and I basically worded those two suggested rules so that: a) it gets rid of completely horizontal wedges that don't exist in real life due to floors never being perfectly even. And b) it prevents replacing hinges with burst motors that have no other function than to make a wedge, as is the case in unrealistic Stock and DSL designs. Flippers are still valid, a good builder will still be able to make an effective flipper.

Do not violate the spirit of the competition or you will be disqualified. Remember that your robot will be voted into the competition based on how realistic it looks.

can't we do that for wedges instead of just banning them altogether?

Not too sure how that would work, considering he can only accept 16 entries, and then he eliminates some by vote

So what will this become? An 8-bot tourney?

I think it's any amount can enter, but only 16 can be voted in.

For the record US featherweight shell spinne Steel Shadow has at least 12 impact teeth, Phrizbee and Megabyte both had large amounts of small teeth. IMHO it's more unrealistic to have two 70kg hammers than a large amount of small DS teeth.

So you're saying the game itself doesn't follow the rules and thus every bot entered into this should be banned?
So you're saying Hitler was a relative of the current royal heratige of South Sudan?

He's only allowed to have 16 entrants in the actual tournament. So really he can accept as many as he wants but only 16 will make it in.

I think you guys are taking this too seriously, just sit back and let the tournament go on.

Thanks.  30kg per Heavy Tread and 10kg per Light Tread seem rightly priced.  This is assuming that the IRL rules prevent people from using static tread as armor of course.

If someone uses treads as armor for this tourney they will likely get voted off the island anyways.

Yeah vote will probably get rid of stuff like that.

Anyway here's Tread HS with 459kg.  Not the most IRL weapon setup, but then again not planning to use this either.

Re Garvin or something: I have been lurking the forums for ages, usually looking once or twice a day. I've happened to unfortunatly stumble across some of his posts... They didn't end well in my eyes.
