Firebat11's Stock Showcase
« on: May 11, 2011, 01:50:16 PM »
I See this as my first "true" stock robot, one which can compete with the Starcore AI pack v3. I just recently got back into robot arena and quickly picked up on how to do the stacking method (the legal way  ). In less than an hour, I was able to produce this:

Shredder

Weighing in at 996.9 KG, this SHW bot is capable of taking on some of the more annoying bots in SC-AI v.3 (at least in my opinion)
It will live up to it's name by leaving the arena littered with shrapnel & metal parts.

I didn't realize that the starcore pack gets progressively harder as each version progresses, otherwise I wouldn't have downloaded V.3 right from the start. However I feel that I am quickly learning to adapt to the AI level of competition that is presented to me.

The tutorial on stacking snappers was MORE than helpful.

Here's two battles I had with some SHW bots:

I'm still far from where I would like to be in terms of building bots, and I see that this robot pales in comparison to some of the other SHW bots, so any/ all pointers or advice how I can improve on this bot are welcome.

Awesome! There is room for improvement, but a lot of win there!

Mount your Irons using this tutorial: (would be a great place to start)

Very good.  Here's a few tips to help improve it:

It's underweight; The official weight limit for SHWs is 1200 kgs.  I recommend using the remaining 200 kgs to add more weapons and armor.

Yes the weapon setup can be improved, however I'm not a fan of the technique JD posted: It wastes weight and leaves the weapons prone to being ripped off.

This will run fine with only 2 Supervolts, so you can get rid of the pink and the 2 Niftys and stack another Supervolt inside the one you have, if you haven't done so already.
Tournament Record: 94 Wins - 50 Losses
Challenge Record: 2 Wins - 2 Losses

Really? I thought as soon as you exceeded the 800Kg weight it falls under SHW; that's awesome then! As for the power supply, that makes sense, it's just stacking those black beasts are such a....well, you know. But I shall try!

I was trying to cover up my wheels with the snow plow, but I found the iron spikes defend them pretty well. I guess defending my rear end should be my next big task.

Defending the rear shouldn't be that big of a priority. More often than not, your front's going to be pointed at the opponent, so that's where all your weapons are going to be.

And you're right about anything over 800kg being technically classified as a SHW, but the weight limit is 1200kgs, and it's a bit of a waste not to use it all. That's why you rarely see any HW's at less than 790kg.

Normally I'd agree to that, but I find on the odd occasion some bots (with wedges. I.e. Maelstrom) seem to get me on my side or sometimes spin me around on my backside. Would installing wedges be appropriate?

At the back, no. At the front yes, but you need to make sure they're effective enough, which is something I have a bit of trouble doing most of the time.

Well, after some time spent in the lab, I was able to attack a few of the suggestions that were made.

For starters I did away with the nifty's and pinkies while installing another 12v black box. I tried countless times from different angles to stack the 12v battery, but I just couldn't do it. I'll probably try again tomorrow, but in the meantime I think it will suffice.

Now for the second change. I've added 2 wedges in front of the plow and protected the extenders with some blades. What a difference this has made. I've taken on all the SHW bots (except the locust borg because for some reason my game crashes) and I've won effortlessly. Forget about the heavy weights, the SHW's are boarder-lining easy (trying not to sound too pretentious lol).

The weight of this bot has now been bumped up to 1113.9 Kg's

Try to clone this bot. It uses the eFFe glitch. Sage has a tutorial about it. Find it in Tutorials and Tips.

Nice posting your own bot there. A better (And more challenging) bot to clone would be Child's PLay IV.

Do you really think we should be telling this guy to clone?

We should be giving him ideas for new bots and constructive criticism.

On the subject f the bot.
It's Underwieght for a SHW, Only use one type of battery and that way you could shrink the chassis at the back and add more weapons.

Enjoy your stay here.

Red-Ace built a bot that is slightly better and easier to make at some point. Don't know where in his showcase though.

Just a note, if your wedges are sucking, it's because your batteries are located behind your drive motors. Generally having them in line or in between the drive motors.
Also, you may want separate snappers for the wedges. Wedges tend to suck if you have too much weight mounted on them.

Not exactly the case. There are a lot of bots with that configuration and can get under NWB. Why? Snapper2 and DDT wedges. :P
