Title: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on April 15, 2011, 05:41:57 PM
Hey guys, I guess this is my real introductory post - I made a topic in the new member welcome forum but then I found out no one will see it unless they only have 1 post or are logged out...anyway I'll just quote my post from there.

Hello GTM and all the users here! I literally just joined the forums about 10 minutes ago, and I guess you'll be calling me Fracture from now on. Here's some stuff about me:

  • I got interested in robot combat at about 8 years of age when watching Robot Wars. My favourite bot was Dominator 2, and my least favourite was Pussycat; I think Pussycat just randomly beat Dominator once or something and that's why I didn't like it. Nowadays I don't watch it, and there's really no favourites for me.
  • I first got Robot Wars: Extreme Destruction for the PC because it seemed like a good game. Later I found Robot Arena 2, which seems a lot better, and realistic.
  • I'm from Canada, so don't start raging at me if I say centre instead of center or colour instead of color. :P
  • I've been playing RA2 for about half a year now, probably less. I started about a year ago but obviously I haven't been playing full time since then. At the moment I play about 5-30 minutes of RA2 per day, which I'm not sure would count as just right or lower than average.
  • So far I've only built Stock and I'm not bad at it, if I may say so myself. Really, I've been looking at some bots here so I know what level I'm at. I think I'd like DSL very much if I tried it, but I'm weird and won't. Dunno if I'm just lazy, scared, or whatever.
  • I'm also weird because I don't use AI parts. Yeah, kinda puts a damper on my building without the Snapper II, but whatever. Same reasons as for why I haven't tried DSL.
  • Again, also weird because I'm still staying in my little corner of building LWs and occasionally AWs. No HWs or MWs that I've actually worked hard on so far. Less options means less likely to build a bad robot, right? Also it doesn't take as long. :P

Anyway at this point I'm not sure how dead or alive this forum is, but hopefully I can get some good criticism in my showcase so I can become a better builder. I've been on a few other forums, but holy crap there's a lot of posting features here. I'm talking marquees, smileys, spoilers, insert FLASH?! And a BUNCH of profile customization too; I'm just used to an avatar and a signature.  :rage Also I have no idea what reputation is.

Anyway I guess I'll see you guys on the rest of the forums, it seems pretty friendly here! (I kinda want the post verification to go away though T_T)

So, I guess this is the part where I post my bots?

Just some pics of two previous bots I made a long time ago to show my progress...

Because N12s are were the bomb. I just felt like showing you that. Now for my first ever real showcased bot...I bet I'll look back on this in a few months and think "Wow, I really sucked back then."

It's very efficient: 200/1.6 + 100 +100 = 325, enough to be powered by a Nifty. A DDT, however, would make the total power output have to be 512.5, a Supervolt. (and kind of a waste even then)

Yes, the razors all hit at the same time.

Yes, the wedge is below the wheels.

Yes, the razors start below the top of the chassis.

Yes, it has DSA.

Yes, it can self-right.

Comments? Anything about my level in terms of AI packs? I'm not sure if I should shorten the wedge, to protect the extender, but making it less effective. The wedge blocks most frontal attacks though, so the only thing I can imagine hitting that extender would be a very well placed hammer shot. (whether it be side or vertical)

Sorry there's no epic battleshots of me beating Starcore bots or something. I'm still on RFS AI v1.5; it's too easy but I love the teams and bot names.

Well at least you built up to the weight limit on your first bots :P

As for you new bot, looks very nice and actually looks like one of my first bots.

Only thing I suggest is maybe get rid of a couple of razors and get a black or something else, but it really is fine as is. Good job and stick around, you've already impressed me.

That actually doesn't look too bad, I reckon. I think if your MW and HW bots are of a similar standard, you might be able to hold your ground in Starcore V1.

Nice bot there, excellent for a first showcased bot.
You do really need the snapper II at the very least though, in heavier bots they are VERY usefull.
I'd also highly recomend you do get DSL aswell, it's teh boss.

I never thought about making the chassis T-Shaped in a LW pop-up. Though it is less powerful than a DDT and regular z-teks are overkill for drive on LW. Use RedBirds or RADs and try to fit a DDT and it would be a pretty good pop-up.

Just v1? D: That's depressing.

loljk, yeah I need to start building in other weight classes if I want to become a decent bot builder. I've heard the Starcore AI packs are really good for testing your bots so I guess I'll try them out soon.

Yeah, it's like that feeling when you have a buttload of homework to do...sometimes you just keep playing RA2 or something else, because you're either too lazy and/or you're kind of scared of doing all of it, in a way. I'll get to it sooner or later.

I'm also happy to hear you speak Chinese, is the dialect Mandarin?

Wow I regret typing this tediously long post now. The posting box keep messing up and randomly scrolling up so I can barely see what I'm typing. >_<

Question: What's with the "DP!" in like every single showcase I look in?

Basicly your robot and Omnivore share the same concept of spinning weapon on a servo to attack the tops of other bots c

Welcome to the forums. :3

On your first bot, I like the Omnivore concept. The only things are:
- Change the drive motors to HPZ's.
- Upgrade your wheels to Shinies, Rubbers, or Slipperbottoms.
- Minimize empty space in your chassis.

On your second bot:
- Change the wheels to shinies. Once you do this, you could
- add an extra rack of weapons.
- Put the castor higher up as armour (castors are invincible, you know! ;))

On the third bot, IMO, I like it. Don't bother changing anything unless other people tell you to. :D

So are there any specific rules about double/triple/quadruple/etc. posting here? And how about swearing?

I LOVE YOU.

Wait...

...THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU. *throws holy water*

I made this little bugger in 2 hours. Motors attached to a servo or snapper spin faster, right?

Plastic and 8 Maces, attached the not-cool way where they don't hit at the same time.

But wait, maybe a DSA one with 9 Razors would be better?

Or is DSA with 6 Maces attached the cool way where they all hit at the same time better?

What if I keep the DSA but attach 7 Maces in the not-cool way...?

Maybe I should go back to Plastic and attach the Maces in the cool way?

Wat do? xD

Keep all of 'em! They all look good! If you are going to attach stuff in the "not cool way" still rotate them so they are paralle to the ground instead of  perpendicular to it.

What's different about it? I mean other than how it looks, e.g. does it protect the extenders better or something?
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase

Yes, they hit the opponent better also.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: NFX on April 16, 2011, 11:37:46 AM
That looks seriously good for a newcomer. I can see you becoming a real strong builder pretty soon. Just one thing I would point out, if you have 8 or 7 maces on a tribar, it will be seriously unbalanced. 6 maces seems good at this stage, but attach them the "not cool" way, to save a bit of weight, and keep the extenders better protected. If you go to Plastic and have a razor on the innermost attachment point, that should give you a bit more weaponry than a normal 6-mace HS, and I think they make a roughly straight line between them, so they should all hit the opponent at the same time, dealing more damage.

Well, you've jumped so far forward in such a little amount of time, it's unbelieveable. Now, get Starcore V3 and the AI component pack, and prepare to yell your bollocks off.

It becomes REALLY unstable then. As in it flies in the air and I can't drive at all. :P

DSA, and self-righteable...ish. idk, remains untested. I could give it Plastic and make the srimech extender longer....

Thanks for the link, but I could've just found both of those on the big buttons labelled "Downloads" and "AI Packs" on the GTM homepage. :P

I should name it Insult so I can make a MW upgrade and name that one Injury. :o

It gets under other bots, flips them over with the spinner (while causing lots of damage), and pushes them around while grinding their undersides. It does fairly well in Starcore v4.

Use rads instead of Redbirds, then use maces and/or irons. Then use Stock AI-style snapper2s.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on April 29, 2011, 11:31:06 PM
The weapon, drive, battery and wedge are all good.  The only problem I can see with that bot is the shape... with such a narrow front, it will be easily knocked to the side and the sides of the chassis will easily get hit.  If you use a Snapper II instead of a Snapper 2 for the wedge, you might get enough weight to make a wider chassis.  (The chassis will still be vulnerable, but it's better for the front to get hit than the sides, plus a bigger chassis has more HP.)

Also, with careful placement it should be possible to attach the Redbirds directly to the baseplate anchors and eliminate those extenders.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: J on April 29, 2011, 11:34:55 PM
Instead of using 2 anchors, you could just use 1 and put a sideways extender on it, and then put the 2nd extender off the other end. You would have the same set-up, except the wheels would be closer to the chassis, and have a few bits of weight to mess around with.

The Redbirds are pretty exposed, but I don't have enough weight to put them inside the chassis, and downgrading to RADs inside the chassis...well, let's just say that right now it's already so bouncy that the best thing it can get under is a chassis wedge.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Badnik96 on May 05, 2011, 03:13:43 PM
use a small wedge, it is wedgier than an EMERGENCY wedge.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase

Perfect wedges aren't much of a problem in the LW division, and it's easier to feed bots into the spinner with a bigger wedge...

Fracture has a point.

protip: split the wedge extender into 2 20cms, and attached one on the side AP of another to move the wedge to the center of the robot

On the LW Crawler, if you rotated the motors 90 degrees and had them facing away from each other, you could wire it like an SnS and that'd be quite a tough opponent, I reckon.

Somebody forgot to review his physics. :o If the motors face away from each other the chassis spins instead while the discs do nothing.

And it's already supposed to be an SnS (what else did you think?).

At the moment, because their planes of motion are closer together, it'll be slower to turn. And RA2 basically ties physics to a chair and farts at it until it passes out.

For the pop-up:
-Use normal Z-Teks.
-Take off the ramplate and castor armor.
-Try to fit in a DDT.
-Use irons, not razors.

tbh, you would be fine with redbirds on the LW popup.
And try to re-design the chassis a little bit, you are eating up a ton of weight by putting the snapper between the drive an the nifty.

So last night I thought about what makes a signature bot. As in, what are some of the qualities I'd want in my signature bot? Well, first of all, I'd want it to remind people of me...I don't want anyone to see it and go "Hey that looks like a bot Pwnator would build!". I decided that I was pretty much known for no bots other than lightweights, so...I decided I was going to build a lightweight. But, what else makes a signature bot? It has to be unique was another point I came up with...not something people have seen a million times before. That's boring. Of course, while being unique, it has to be effective at the same time; this is the kind of bot I'd want to consider entering into tournaments, and I don't mean the in-game ones with the Stock AI. So with my checklist ready, I set out to make my bot...but after I was done, I realized, a signature bot needs a cool name and texture. This was definitely the hardest part of making my signature bot...I couldn't find or make any good textures or come up with a good name at first. I pulled through in the end, though, and this is what I came up with:

Trine was a cool little HS I built with DSA and a Nifty, as it only needed to power 4 RADs...but apparently it ran out of power too quickly, so I rebuilt the chassis to fit in a Supervolt. Insides:

The RADs spin faster because of the SnapperII, and Trine is weaponed with two Irons and four Razors as well as DSA. So I built a nice bot. Was I done? I wanted to make sure I was truly satisfied with my to-be signature bot...so I took it out for a spin with Starcore AI v4, and LOVED how it performed. If I ever wanted to know how a bot was built and its extender setup and whatnot, I could just battle it with Trine, because it literally dismantled every single bot it came across. I made an album of some good dismantling memories of some battles:

Trine and me dismantling Billy Goat Gruff because I wanted to find out why the wedge was attached in such a weird way.

Happy times dismantling Tempus Fugit. (DANGIT TRINE YOU MISSED A WHEEL AGAIN )

A nice picnic with Eagle Borg Scout. He lost all of his 9 razors and I lost 1.  :trollface (41-second dismantling, that's a new record for Trine! :D)

It was actually after I tried it out that I understood how Trine was so successful in its battles - the bottom tribar, being placed extremely low to the ground, went under most other chassi or at least other spinners to attack the chassis directly on HS, while the top one aimed for exposed motors like on v4 Cyclone or Sentinel Observer, or just simply the chassis. I <3 this bot, and I'll somehow make it my signature in the future. You'll find your signature bot someday too if you just believe!  :laughing

So anyway that's my new bot Trine with a bit of a backstory for your enjoyment. As you can see it beats Starcore v4 AI with ease and I really like it. Plus, it's a LW HS that's actually unique, what more could you ask for?

Haven't seen this kind of HS in ages. Great job.

I don't think this is gonna be your signature bot, though. You can find that our signature bots are on the heavier weight classes. Which is which is why Sage doesn't have any LWs nor MWs on his sig. :P

That is VERY nicely built. I'm not a fan of asymmetrical chassis', personally, but it does look great. I'm wondering if the extender work/chassis could be lightened up a bit for you to get six irons on there. If you mounted the SnapperII on its back, and attached the motors directly to it, I think that'd help.

Either. As long as it's stacked deep enough to shed the weight needed for the 3rd iron. :P

you actually don't need to shrink it at all, just lower the chassis so its flush with the black and it will get you more than the .2kg you need.

your probably the best builder we've had in a while too.

Also you should try lowering the top spinner to make it invertible, and see if it's still as good.

You could Stack the CB into the Black to save weight. But something I've just noticed, on the upper tribar, try using the other attachment point to angle it downwards, which should make it invertible. Probably.

Yeah, but a nifty barely powers that. It works for two HP-Zteks and one standard or something, and the snapper uses more than a standard Z-teks power drain.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on May 21, 2011, 08:03:12 PM
Nifty = 400 A
Snapper2 = -125 A
HP Z-tek = -100 A

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think 100 + 100 + 125 is 325, and I think 325 is less than 400. Not sure though. :P
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Pwnator on May 21, 2011, 09:30:47 PM
A Nifty's fine for a Snapper2 and 2 HPZs, but 7 razors is overkill on a Snapper2, let alone a DDT, which results in mediocre scores.

Generally, the maximum amount of razors you can put on a Snapper2 for efficiency is 4 (and 6 for a DDT).

Neat idea, though. Swap the positions of the Snapper2 and Nifty (do this via snapper loading) and just give it 4 razors. Now you have weight for the ice picks Synergy had. :D

If he did that, he'd save weight by removing the need for that red extender. Maybe he'd be able to get DSA on it.

you can't attach motors directly to axles IIRC, so he'll still need an extender.

YES THANK YOU.

Works like a charm now...by RA2 physics the axle should make the Z-tek spin weirdly ("perpendicular" to the tribar) but it's weird and doesn't. Which is good because the Z-tek stays still and the bot's a lot more stable.  :claping

BLEHHHH

Below average. Excellent wedge, though the casters are evil and do NOT help stuff get up. It's supposed to counter double wedges. There's 9 razors on that one DDT.... I had a bit of fun AI'ing it though with the lazy-replace-one-of-the-bots-in-Starcore-AI way. So there's a lot of battleshots.

Random CB exostack.

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase

9 razors is overkill, bro. Try taking 2 out and place the DDT and the Snapper2 side by side (with the DDT rotated 180-degrees). You can then slope the chassis even more and check if the casters work this time.

Nah. Push the Snapper2 inward, load the axle then attach the DDT. Of course, that would require a slight chassis modification.

Hope I did it right.

When I went to try it out, the wedge sucked and couldn't get under anything. So I literally went through all the possible start points for the wedge Snapper2 to see if it improved. After it got really low I just gave up hope and thought, "If the next one doesn't get under Mutiny II, I give up." So I moved the start position one pixel to the left on the slider, and it got under Mutiny! I'm just really surprised at how low it is.

80% of the time Win! Win! WIN! just slides right under it, and the rest of the time it manages to get under....

All the weight on the DDT doesn't seem to interfere with damage too much (still 9 razors). Fury still cheats and acts like the casters aren't even there. :dead:

I think I'll just ditch the T-shape and use the generic wide chassis that most Pyscolone challenge bots have.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: NFX on June 04, 2011, 02:08:20 PM
Fury's hitting the sides of the chassis, so the casters should really be moved outwards so they're sticking out of the sides as much as possible. Aside from that, it actually looks quite good. Maybe 9 razors it a bit much, would it be able to self right?

You

Are

A

Genius

Not only does it troll Fury consistently now (okay I admit it, I only tried twice, but it OHKO'd Fury both times :P), the spreading of the casters has apparently made the wedge better...it outwedged Win! Win! WIN! 5/6 times, AI'd.

AI'd Battleshots:

Maybe 9 razors it a bit much, would it be able to self right?
Not AI'd, but that's not as much because of the 9 razors on the DDT as it is the long shape of the bot. It can self right with the Snapper2 if I'm driving though, or if it self-rights while going forward at the same time. (of course, this would technically be backwards when it's upside down)

Switch tabs, then return to Components. Now select the SnapperII and move the Start of motion swing a little bit, then End of motion swing, then Start of motion swing again to snap the axle back into place.

Trine 1.1.

It's half signature bot rebuild and half artbot! :O

It looks a lot like a bot you'd show to a newbie...it's got a demonstration of Snapper Loading, good space management, stacking a CB in a Nifty, shows the three best Stock weapons, how much battery power is needed per 4 spin motors, and what motors are good for the weapons/drive on LW/MW HS. I had to re-Snapper Load it to get the tribars both facing the same way. xD Almost perfectly symmetrical too.

I'd say I would've won with full HP if I'd used two Irons and one razor on each tribar, but I already did. :P Pretty sure 4 Irons/Maces would be better though, except then it won't be as artsy!

Ignore the paintjob, I'm too lazy to properly do that right now. Inside setup is nothing fancy, just two extenders off of the Snapper II. Oh, and has Plastic.

I'll probably rebuild it with 6 Maces on two RADs with a Snowplow in front, although that leaves me with 4 extra kg that I don't know what to use on other than to makes the chassis bigger and protect...something, better. Would still need Plastic though.

Ugh, this should be a challenge or something..."Build a practical LW HS with DSA, two RADs with 3 maces each, and a snowplow". This one has three extenders and could probably be done with two, but that would result in a very messy setup. Maybe with everything static and no Snapper II?

Anyway so it has Plastic and is all underweighty now. >_> The tribars are pointing up because when they were pointed down the bot got owned by Tempus Fugit because the plow got knocked off in like 3 seconds.

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: NFX on August 02, 2011, 11:56:57 AM
I'm not sure about it being unstable, I'm more concerned that the plow and weapon-breaker will spin round and round uselessly as a result of the torque reaction of the HPZ spinning the weapons around. But this can easily be remedied by mouting the axle pointing forwards instead of upwards, you aren't using the rear-facing AP on the bottom extender for anything. =)

It spazzes out when another bot so much as touches it not to mention that it starts with the axle rotated to a different position each time. n_n Stacking the axle mount inside the two RADs was damn hard, too.

Are the RAD's on the baseplate?
Yeah.

I'll have to ask here since the Chatbox is dead...

For my juggler, should I:

a) Use rubbers with 10 Razors and 6 Maces (will be asymmetrical)
b) Use Shinies with 8 Maces and 8 Irons, or
c) Use Shinies with two ballasts and 20cm longer wedges?

Sounds like AGOD to me. That tends to happen when you use maces on a FS like this. I have to say it's very impressively built, though. But Ironbot has a limit of 6 casters, unfortunately. But you will be able to upgrade to Rubber or even Slipperbottom wheels with the weight saved by dropping down to 6 casters.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: infiniteinertia on August 04, 2011, 10:19:50 AM
Junk. You're gonna have to build them like heavyweights if you want to have at least decent bots. No wedge reach and I cannot even begin to explain how that weapon is supposed to work...and 6wd great application choice d00d.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: madman3 on August 04, 2011, 12:21:27 PM
Having a tiny-ass chassis does you no good on a juggler where it has to be stable.

6 wheel drive also sucks on the format because you have no plough, as your opponents will just go strait over you. Or get punted really randomly.
Isn't wide enough either and those extender meatshields won't last long. ext

Well, if it's my first real HW I might as well start from the basics. Better?

A lot of wedge emphasis on this one. I wanted to have 2 ballasts (YOU HEARD ME) at the front as well, but no space for that even without the casters. Still not sure about plow placement, or if having the Snappers at the back will hurt the wedges. I went for wider-spaced spinners for better trapping, but at this point I'm beginning to wonder if they're too wide...

this for ironbot?
But Ironbot has a limit of 6 casters, unfortunately.
Guys I can't enter Ironbot. :P (though I'd like to)

You will save weight by removing these snappers that hold the plow, and just use a simple anchor.

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: infiniteinertia on August 11, 2011, 04:41:03 PM
Miles...no...LEAGUES better than the original. Probably your best to date.

Nary is right with the casters....you should work on doing a better job of spacing them out, and probably use one less on each side. When I use casters...I place them 2,4,6,8,and 9 notches up (I think). Some sort of pattern like that. There should be at least 2 notches raised between each caster layer. Removing a caster on each side allows you to at least substitute 4 of those outer razors for irons.

This one is more of a personal preference. You should try substituting those top trapping plows for something else. As Nightcracker recently mentioned, snowplows really don't do a great job of "trapping". Samurai Swords, or Bracket wedges, might be better options.

Gah, I don't believe this...rubbers and DDTs and it still doesn't get under Neglected Waterbug. Does fine vs. RPB though. I'll continue to experiment with DDT start positions for a wedge that beats NWB...

I tried Bracket Wedges at first (as you can tell by the red chassis to match the colour scheme), but bots still flew over them so I switched to swords. Somehow veers left when driving even when the spinners aren't active. Casters at 3, 4, 6, and 8 notches up. (a caster still passes through the chassis at 2 notches, inf :P) 8 is the maximum height, btw.

Face the blades the other way, and do something with them. Having them be absolutely vertical will not do much trapping.

Swords tilted forward 3 notches from 90 degrees, which in testing was the best angle against RPB. I don't really want to use bracket wedges because they can't be angled as far due to their shorter height and bots fly over them as previously mentioned.

The wedge is weird; it loses to NWB when I go at full speed from the very beginning of the match, but gets under if I go slow at first and then charge at a medium speed (out of context thread, here I come). Maybe I'll rebuild it with Snapper2 wedges and/or the Snapper IIs somewhere in front of the drive.

Half the time, Sage's red snapper fetish confuses me because only half the robots that use all red snappers he says "are terrible" because of it.

Edit: Good job Mr. AwesumSauce. :P 8 razors, 1 black, DSA, etc. etc.

The wedge is good (for Snapper IIs), while the weapon motors are pretty slow, and even slower to retract...but far from useless.

But your wedges are set way too far beneath the chassis as is. A shallower angle will give you better results.
After trying every wedge angle possible pixel by pixel, it was the best wedge. Here's a better camera angle for reference; maybe the previous screenshot makes it look steeper than it really is:

Actually I don't even know if it counts as exostacking since it's placed half outside the chassis normally as if it was a regular component being placed inside the chassis. xD Just trying to have a little fun.

Both invertible...chassis are definitely airtight on both, so the only way to get DSA on them would be to use 6 razors and a snowplow on the first one (the snowplow also requires an extender and is a hindrance to the spinner's reach), and replacing the end maces with razors and getting rid of the caster on the second one. Neither really seem like appealing options.

Edit: I already knew the second bot looked like Alter Ego II, but I just realized, the first one looks like Death by Purple 3. And here I was thinking I'd made something a bit more unique. :P

First one's not as much of a DBP3 clone as you'd think. DBP3 didn't have a caster, wasn't invertible, but had a burst enhanced HPZ instead. And the chassis was a bit less square-y. =)

I'm not sure if it needs it; without the blade a bit of the 140cm is left exposed, although I suppose the faster drive could act as a pseudo-blade by keeping the opponent from reaching the extender with the faster drive.

Really try to lighten up the extender work on the drive. When you attach the HPZ's, the sides without lumps should be facing up and down, it looks a little bit cleaner, and it helps with ground clearance (HPZ's obscure collision mesh). Space management is very good, though, as is the choice of red extenders. :gawe:

how quickly does the battery drain on the SnS ?
It's at half after about 1 minute, after which I'm assuming the motors slow down.

also, you can still fit three maces on extender..
I know, but I had 6 kg extra weight, plus with the extra extender they all hit at the same time. (the ones on each piston arm, not all 6 :P)

asdf I was trying to make a Paramecium clone, a.k.a. this

but I CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE #$%&^*@ING SETUP

398.8 - component weight = 19.8 kg for the extenders and chassis. The most airtight (and I mean airtight) chassis I could get was 12.7 kg with Plastic, so I can only assume that Ounce's chassis is 12.8 kg, leaving 7 kg for extender work. Each extender weighs 2 kg, meaning there are max. 3 extenders used for the setup for a total of 6 kg, leading me to believe that the original chassis was actually 13.8 kg.

You can see the first extender attached to the SnapperII in the top picture. Also the Z-teks have the pointy parts forward which means they have to all be attached from connection points that go out sideways from an extender. Meaning the setup is not this

or this

and I thought maybe it was this but it wasn't very symmetrical

and now I have a headache

what that exostack has to do with anything I do not know

it's not that hard to figure out...

sideways connector. another connector attached to the short side (so really close to the back axle of the SII). the far APs of both extenders have zteks, and the insides of them have RADs. on the last open connection point, another sideways extender is placed. attached to both ends of this are the zteks.

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on November 27, 2011, 09:52:31 PM
Too narrow IMO.  Very good space management and setup though.

Also, it's always better to have a chassis wedge under your ram plates so you can still fight without them.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on November 27, 2011, 10:04:59 PM
But that would add weight! And make it more generic! And chances are if it's screwed enough to get both its ramplate knocked off, it'll probably die even with a chassis wedge anyway! Also it gives the opponent more chassis area to hit at the front and front-sides!

What's the problem with being narrow? The chassis, you mean, because if I had (the weight for) the HP Z-teks next to the blacks, the bot as a whole would still be just as wide; the only thing that would be wider is the chassis.

Sage actually praised one of my bots that has red extenders? MY EXISTENCE HAS BEEN VALIDATED
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on November 27, 2011, 10:17:33 PM
It's bad to be too narrow because it makes it easier for spinners to hit your sides, which makes it difficult to get under them.  It doesn't ruin the bot but try fighting some spinners and you'll see what I mean.

And lots of popups don't even have ram plates (Pyscolone popups) yet can still beat some spinners, so if you have weight it's good to have a chassis wedge as backup.

And I don't think Sage noticed the red extenders. :P
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: R0B0SH4RK on November 28, 2011, 02:27:43 AM
Ramplates on wedges are rarely worth the weight investment in sub-HW Stock bots (although there are exceptions), and you should always, always, ALWAYS have a chassis wedge when building Stock wedges. One good hit from a spinner on a ramplate, even if it doesn't hit your chassis, and your bot will be entirely useless. Remember that Stock ramplates only have 1000 hp, so they don't offer great defense.

But Sage is still right, it is very nicely put together. Excellent space management, although the overall design isn't particularly great.

Wedges really aren't that good WHY

I thought they would be better because of the weight of the Z-teks and weapons being placed on the SnapperII at the front this time. Would the bot lean back because of the back stuff being anchored at the front, or what?

I run into that problem with wedges as well when I design bots.  In real-world physics you would think that weight distribution like that would positively effect the wedge capabilities of the bot.  But, alas, in RA2 physics this does not seem to be the case.  I keep falling for it over and over without thinking things through.  It seems that traction trumps weight distribution when it comes to wedges, mainly because of the way that wheels react to the driving surface.   By my observations, it seems that four wheels spread out has a more positive effect on a wedge then 2 wheels lined-up, or even four wheels lined-up.

Because RA2 physics are unfortunately grossly inaccurate in comparison to Real world physics... You have to think of the bottom of your bot as a suction cup.  The traction rating for the wheels determines the amount of pull toward the floor and where you place them determines how much balanced pull to the floor you have.

I think this is, ultimately, why 4 wheel drive bots with shinies (in stock, hypnos in DSL)  is incredibly common and also seems to have a good success rate with their wedge.

I didn't state it was fact.  It is mostly my observation.  There are so many variables to take into account.  But, I think that wheel traction and balance plays a huge role in wedge efficiency.

Accurate testing, of course, would be awesome.  :D

Hmmm... interesting point.  Especially since there is obvious success against R4 there.  Now my head hurts.

Out of curiosity what is the collison mesh like on your problem-bot?  It looks like the ramplates are angled downward enough to possibly effect the wedge in comparison to your other bots.

JD:

They shouldn't go under the chassis anyway since they're attached the exact same way as on NWB.

VB: Well, it always either ties or wins, never loses, so I would say yes...
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Virus Bomb on December 03, 2011, 01:15:53 PM
I honestly feel that if a bot can get under RPB then its wedges are atleast good. You might want to try to lower the wedges a bit more than what you have in that pic.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on December 03, 2011, 01:25:05 PM
Lowering them doesn't help. I feel like it should at least be able to slide smoothly under RPB but that never happens, it's more they bump each other away and then my bot gets under in the next collision.

Oh, and in my game, for some reason RPB gets under NWB even with NWB in the player 1 slot (tried three times)...I'm testing this in the Combat Arena, any explanation?
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on December 03, 2011, 01:53:05 PM
RPB actually isn't that wedgy.  It's mainly hard to get under because it's so wide, and the gap is filled with spinning razors nearly scraping the floor.  It's really hard to get a true head-on wedge collision, but if you do, it's not super difficult to get under.

Try rotating the Snapper IIs 90 degrees so they rotate on a horizontal axis, and see if that helps the wedges.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase

This conveniently required a chassis rebuild...and didn't help. :FFFUUU

NWB still slides right under with ease. So do Epic and Insectoid (the latter of which gets under NWB in my game for some reason). Hell, Epic Jr. gets under it and it has SnapperII wedges.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: nightcracker on December 07, 2011, 10:30:06 AM
Epic Jr. and Insectoid actually are the two wedgiest bots of Starcore, as I found.
Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Clickbeetle on December 10, 2011, 08:48:10 PM
Insectoid is way underappreciated.  It's at least as good as NWB or RPB if not better, yet no one seems to talk about it.  Maybe it's because it has no convenient three-letter acronym.  IST?  ITD?  ISD?

If you really want good wedges, one thing you can try is stripping the bot down to the bare essentials (chassis, drive, wedge, and nothing else) and trying to get under various bots.  If the wedges are bad, get a different setup or add ballast and try again.  If they're good, then add weapons and armor and hope they stay good.  If they don't, get a different setup for weapons or armor.

I didn't want to put too much weight on it since gravity pulls it down when it lifts back up after firing, and I couldn't put more weapons because of rule of 7. :P I think I'm gonna get rid of 2 maces from each side hammer to double up the side plows though.

Popcorn: A "good" popup; its only saving grace is that it has just 4 spike strips for weapons.
Jack the Ripper: Actually not a candidate; it's way too good. I just wanted to show my "first" 36HS...because razors are just as good as irons or maces for less weight, right? Why is everyone using those when they can just use razors? I'll be smart and do that! Plus square extenders.
Bot Clean-Up: A rupter. I think there's too much weight on the DDT though, so it doesn't even rupt...incredibly fast though, which should be pretty funny if I enter it.
Maskinen: (it's like La Machine, except I used Swedish instead of French) A flipper. The small wedges don't fire though; there's a secret piston inside the chassis that fires horizontally which apparently is supposed to flip stuff.
NightTerror: 6WD HPZ VS spinning down. The VS is on a HP servo, but I just used it as a heavy baseplate anchor at the time and it's not wired.
Pin and Kill: 3 DDTs (!) for weapons. Name speaks for its function.

I freakin' love that Castered HS. I need to make me one of those at some point. Dual Wedged LW Popup, clearly 140cm Square Extenders, nice use of them. Be interesting to see how well it holds up against HS like Shreddar or Death By Purple 3. One with Irons on reminds me of the original Xenophobia a little bit. Hammer/FS does look very cool, though. Tempus Fugit-like stuff likes eating the wedge extenders. =( Single, unstable spinners are a-ok.

Hmm...since tribars have no collision meshes on their arms, I was wondering if they could be used as some kind of invincible armour, except when the centre or ends get hit, because if stuff just goes through them like they weren't there it would be silly. I'm sure Click or Trovaner or someone else will come by soon to educate me some more on tribars.

Jumpy!

3 blacks
1 SnapperII (for the weapons and stuff, anyway)
16 razors on 4 DDTs

Good build. Would make a pretty awesome hybrid. But tribars are far too thin to be effective, I think. And stuff can still hit it, even though it seems to sink through the floor. Which is wierd. Perhaps if you lightened up the popup setup, maybe dropped a couple of DDT's and a few razors, you'd be able to get some weapons on those tribars, and some decent frontal protection.

Too...thin?

I was hoping the arms would be invincible and the cubes on the ends would spin too fast to get hit easily.

This is how it works.  I thought you would've realized by now that RA2 physics are silly. :P  Or else you would notice when you tested that bot.

So yeah, tribars are worthless as armor... but that will still be a pretty good bot if you get some razors on them.

Yeah. Look at how spindly the arms are, and the vast amounts of space between them. Shame it doesn't work, but you could take this and make it into a conventional popup with some sort of FS/HS hybrid feature.

Excellent chassis work on the top two. I'm not a fan of the pink, though, I'd probably lose it, shrink the chassis up at the back if possible, bring the nifty in, and perhaps add a couple of casters on the front for defense.

Second again looks great, but I'm again worried by the lack of defense and battery. Nice simple and clean build, though. I do very much like your style.

HS battles usually last quite a while, so that's why I added the pink/purple/whatever.

I just don't want it to be able to get outweaponed, so the most I can do is get 10 kg by switching to RADs for 2 casters or DSA, but eh.

It's better for trapping, and taking extenders off. Spinning outwards is better for knocking an opponent away.

i always thought spinning inwards is if you have slower motors but i guess i dont play stock too much

spinning outwards is also better for defence iirc which is pretty useful if you only have plastic :P

May I present The League of Lightweights!

I'm having a really hard time deciding what to enter in RIW4, so here's what I've got it narrowed down to. They all have spiffy codenames that make them sound cool and keep their real identities secret. It's like a league of super-robots that fight crime! Going by vertical columns from left to right:

Basher: SnS. DSA, Nifty and 6 bear claws.
Tinier Trinity: Trinity SnS. DSA, 2 purples, and 6 maces.
---
Adult's Work V: HS. DSA, Nifty and spinners powered by RADs. Not actually the 5th rendition of the bot, I just wanted to poke fun at Child's Play IV.
Elter Ago: HS. Plastic, Nifty, and spinner powered by an HP Z-Tek.
Batteryman: HS. Same as Elter Ago but with an extra purple battery instead of a caster.
---
Manhax: HS. DSA, Nifty, and 6 Irons.
Durr: Popup. DSA, Nifty, Redbird drive, SnapperII wedges, and 3 razors on a Snapper2.
---
Tarantella B: SnS/Crawler. Plastic, Nifty, 6 spinning irons on HP Z-Teks, and 4 static irons.
Gradius II: HS/Rammer. Plastic, Nifty, RAD drive, and spinner powered by Z-tek.

Also found this hiding in my Screenshots folder. Pretty!

Spiderbot, spiderbot...

It's on the Bot Exchange because it's such a silly bot. Just keep in mind it almost can't turn...don't feel like finding a way to fix that for obvious reasons. Edit: Nevermind, for some reason it turns much better using 2 wheels instead of 8.

I don't know if it's because of the narrowness, but it does drive straight. Funny because I was almost certain it would have AGOD and/or havok issues.

I could drop to Plastic and add a single razor or something when I'm not feeling lazy. :P Wonder how much damage that razor can do.

Almost forgot I had a showcase...all of these are quite old so I don't even remember building them.

That tribar armour popup without the tribar armour. Made it in a rush just so it wouldn't be completely useless, so definitely not the final version. Still has DSA.

BW Popup for ian. It's ok, I just wanted it to be able to get under anything that wasn't a flipper. DSA.

Remake of that shallow-wedge popup somewhere else in my showcase. 4 razors and DSA.

Just wanted to make my own version of Quark. This setup was pretty unstable though so I had to use a different one. DSA.

HS built off a tribar, DSA.

Some HS, guess it was inspired by CPIV. Plastic.

Redbird FS, not good because other bots always get knocked to the side. DSA.

Generic HS with DSA, just showcased for the weapon setup.

Newer version of old bot, has a cleaner setup. DSA.

VERY old bot from the first half of 2011. DSA.

And some AW chassis.

22.5/15.0

25.5/17.0

16.0/10.7

And now I need to think of something for Robo Zone 2...

BW Popup and last AW Chassis look fantastic. VS looks good, but I think the extender work could be lighter. HW Popup could probably be built without the SnapperII at the back. Tribar HS would probably be better if the chassis was pointing the other way.

some thoughts-

HW POPUP- looks great
BW POPUP- hm, possible ghoul update ?
SHALLOW POPUP- nice, wonder if it can hold its own against hs with that shallow of a wedge, which reminds me i still need to make my n00bot-like thing i wanted to do
CP4HS- the battery isnt going to last long, especiqally with all rads its essentially going to be a turtle after 1:30
LW QUARK HS- i personally like the first one better, but if it fails at stability then eh. a little less reach probably wont kill anyone
SERVO HS- i dont think its worth it honestly
OTHER LW HS- it reminds me of arial hk with razors and dsa.
LW VS- that looks ABAP, wonder if the motor falls off against hs alot though ?
FS- looks a bit like duo, but without the stacked redbirds. wedge looks kinda..... fail-y though
POKER- ugh, atleast it was an old bot
AW CHASSIS'- nice space management, not sure if you really needed that ba+cb stack though, cant you just put the cb on top of the rads ?

(hopes fracture doesnt send a 4 razored rammer for robozone2)

The VS has the best setup I could find. The first extender that sticks out of the non-visible side of the chassis uses its farthest side attachment point for the HPZ so it's centered, so the side that you see needs an extra extender as well, for symmetry. Also, the frontmost extenders to the side are just for protection because of 4 kg of extra weight.
I just feel like baseplate mounting 4 DDTs and 4 HPZs on the popup would give me less weight to use.
The HS I want to be able to lean on the chassis for support, hence the setup that makes the black be at the front.

Popup does great against HS, less so against Dizzy Bees obviously. N00bot-ness always helps.
I'm aware of the battery issue with RADs, but I think it does look pretty cool.
The tribar HS was just for the heck of it.
VS bot definitely does not like HS like Tempus Fugit. It usually does flip the opposing bot a few times before getting the motor knocked off, though, so with some luck it can win.
On the FS I just wanted to elevate the wedges so the opponent gets gutripped easier instead of getting the front rammed.
For the first AW chassis I wanted low ground clearance on the wheels, so that's why the RADs are raised 4 notches.

Unfortunately, I actually might do that.

i really like that. my only concerns are weather or not 10WD is really necessary, or is it one of those "GOTTA GO FAST" kind of rammers (not really too experienced with SHWs so if you would let me know how much drive a regular shw rammer has thatd be great). the "low" weapon count (i counted ~4000 ~40000 HP worth of weaponry, slightly more than your average 36HS has) is kind of worrying too

EDIT: nice job with the 1 snapper too, gonna take me a while to figure out that setup. think i might know it right now but id have to check

lol I don't know SHWs that well either, I don't think anyone does. Looking at the ratio of HPZs to weight, 6WD for a HW is the midpoint between 8WD and 10WD for a SHW. 10WD sounded better to me since it gave a better impression of a "mad dog".

The upper extender holds the ramplate. The lower extender coming off the SnapperII holds two more extenders. Those two extenders are used to attach the drive and weapon motors.

Thanks, I cloned it using the MidF chassis (wich I made 2008, I think), I exchange the blade and downgraded the drive to redbirds for a black, now it have a ramplate and a 2 blacks.

ARBBC

Sawdust, SnS. The wide chassis allows it to spin pretty fast. Plastic and one purple battery.

Torrential, Hammer. Pretty unstable, but does a lot of damage when it hits. DSA and Nifty.

Zephyr, VS. Pretty basic. DSA and Nifty.

SKREAM 3, HS. A sturdy HS with DSA and one black.

Pit Boss, Juggler. Unfortunately, this version uses the 140 cm extender, so I had to send in a super-old one with caster armour that I don't like. DSA and two blacks.

AW and HW are good.

I like the HW alot actually. How did you mount the double ramplates? One baseplate one from the wedge each side?

LW and BW are sloppy. Actually, sloppy is a bad word to use. It sounds condescending. They could just be better with the extender work/component placements in terms of both effectiveness and originality. MW is tEh-generic

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on April 19, 2013, 04:08:08 PM
It's 0% invertible lol, but chances are anything that can flip it over will keep on pushing it around. Irons would be better for popups, but the inside maces are already angled down so I'll just keep maces on the ends for better results against other HS.

Of course it could be better but I like the 2007-era look.

That said, you could make the chassis just a tad taller so you can mount the Snappers vertically and make the wedges symmetrical.  Then get rid of that center baseplate anchor and put two baseplate anchors on the sides instead, in front of the Snappers, and put the Redbirds directly on the anchors.  The discs will be further apart and protect the chassis more.

Decided to give this a try; the arms had to be widened to fit the anchors so the bot did have to be made a bit narrower. I get the symmetrical wedges which is nice, so not sure which version I'll keep.

Basically hoping that HS will get stuck on the caster arms and that smaller rammers simply get boxed in. Even with the widest chassis it still seems too thin though, it would probably be better with a simple snowplow setup which is limited by the max sphere rather than the chassis blueprint. By the way, I discovered that playing on low resolution allows you to make chassis with slightly larger bounds than high resolution.

i'm done working on this. it havoks out of the arena instantly in the test garage and the pistons glitch off the screen if i try to finish it in the bot lab. could just be because they're external or something to do with rule of 7 break; i did make sure that the pistons don't touch the ground. don't feel like rebuilding due to lack of time and i wouldn't even get to use the concept i wanted.

It's alright, seems to still take a bunch of damage vs. the ones that use irons, maybe because the spinners don't bounce off of that chassis shape as much (guess that's everyone's cue to enter their iron HS into the tourney)

Title: Re: A Fractured Stock Showcase
Post by: Fracture on September 23, 2017, 09:50:57 PM
The size is not that bad, it just looks compact in the picture. The DDTs both start facing forward and fire upward - actually I put a smartzone that sticks through the bottom of the chassis because the razors will be able to hit below the bot when they glitch out.

[ This attachment cannot be displayed inline in 'Print Page' view ]

Also, I found that the DDTs would not rupt with 400 battery input, but would always work with 500. So maybe 500 is actually required to be "fully powered" even though they drain 312.5.

DSA and invertible, the setup was really complicated to keep within rule of 7 but not inefficient (basically used a bunch of red extenders as further T-connectors) with 48 irons, 4 pickaxes, and 2 maces in total. Same irons as One Way Ticket and less than Dark July but I traded for casters and a snapper setup. Thank god I had component freedom for attaching the weapons, and even still had to add snapper loading to keep track of where all the extenders were

It can be invertible with shinies or rubbers, but I like to have smaller targets considering it's only got two to work with. A wider rack would probably help against HS, but not really wedged bots since it needs to be able to turn around easily while it's getting knocked around, I also just like the way it looks

cool bot. can't see any way to really improve on it.

is the turnspeed high enough with that wheelbase?

It's not a HS, so the snapper HPZs work well. And I think the game physics are pretty good about rotational inertia; the distance from the drive to the weapons is short so less force is needed to turn.

Assuming 10 razors is overkill, I don't think there's anywhere else you could spend the free weight. DSA is nice to have, but ultimately unnecessary for a one-and-done (or two-and-done) bot. Extra battery power won't do much when fights only lasts for seconds, so spending all the weight on razors was the best thing you could have done.

Since I found out I wasn't eligible for the Challenge Belt, I took the time to make a cleaner version of my initial entry. Wanted to see how many irons I could fit on a heavyweight

Nice design. I see you enjoy the thrill of snappers just as much as I do.
