I'd sure hope so.

I actually improved the website's performance about a week ago but only one person seemed to notice. I've got some more ideas but I think the underlying problem has to do with the fact that we are allowing big files to be uploaded/downloaded (it may be too much for the server to handle in addition to the normal traffic).

microscopic brain cells
as opposed to?
-
I'm not having any problems
-
Me neither
-
It's not that bad for me either.
-
Sometimes when I try to post the website decides to haemmorhage but other than that, it's doing well for the sheer volume of files it has.
-
It's got considerably better for me.
-
There are some periods in the day where the page takes at least a minute or 2 to load and sometimes it gives an error. My guess is the server has trouble running with many people browsing the forum.
-
Mine occasionally comes up with a 404 error or something like that, but it's not exactly like a constant issue.

What pages are you getting the error on? Any details would be much appreciated because the 404 error is basically a placeholder that means something went wrong but the server doesn't known what (so it isn't as useful as any of the other error messages).
That said, are you sure that you are getting the 404 and not some other error? Its strange that you would be getting them when nobody else has been.
I'll have a look at the errors that the forum software has detected for you but I don't expect any answers from it.
-
Sometimes, mine comes with Error 504 when I have 8 tabs open but it's usually really good.
-
Sometimes, the GTM is not loading for me (could be any page), the loading progress bar is frozen (no error), but after some time or if I tap a few times the refresh button - it suddenly load instanteniously.
-
I dunno, I never have problems loading webpages on other sites but this place has always been extra slow for me. Sometimes it can act normal and other times it can take up to a minute just to open up a thread.

Apologies, it is actually 504s that I've been getting.
Mostly recently it was while trying to access the Modifications & Designs board, it came up twice. I'm in now though.

I have noticed a general lack of decent speed here, figured it was this old computer I'm stuck with, or maybe Tim hogging the bandwidth like his old ass usually does. Guess I was wrong.
-
I've gotten a few 500 errors over the past couple days but, for the most part, it hasn't been too bad for me. Unfortunately, I've read numerous reports of other Dreamhost users having similar issues due to too many sites being hosted on their servers and a few performance comparisons basically stating the same thing. Even if I improved GTM's performance, the performance of the other sites on the server would still cause GTM to have 500 errors and slow speeds at times. That said, I'll continue trying to make GTM run faster (it is running at about half the time that it was taking before I made any changes but I've got a few more ideas of what else I can do).
On a side note, people that live in or around California have the fastest loading speeds just because the Dreamhost server is there. I've considered a method called load balancing in which the site utilizes numerous servers to reduce the distance that each visitor's request has to travel but most of the users are from the U.S. and wouldn't notice much of a difference (sorry to those that aren't).

awww
i hate my internet. Uk and 1mbps.
-
Wait wait where did the 50 replies per page setting go? Why did you get rid of it??
-
Turning it off reduces the amount of load on the server and it allows for the server to cache things better. I was very hesitant to disable it but you guys keep telling me that you want GTM to run faster.
-
I was fine with it...
-
With what?
If you mean the page speeds, most of us arent.
-
That's what I meant...
-
The problem is that you are not just affecting yourself. Everyone gets impacted by the actions of everyone else. That's why when someone uploads a big file, the forum seems to slow down.
-
Yeah, its not just local. I think we should have a file size limit

I'm fine as well.

500s and 503s everywhere.
-
503's are related to the server load and my custom error document for it probably wasn't helping matters (so we're using my low-bandwidth version now). If the problem persists let me know.
As for the 500 errors, please give me the information that the error document is giving you and explain what you are doing differently (if anything).
-
I got a 503 but i couldnt paste it because of my phone :(
-
That's okay. The information that it gives you for the 503 errors is not unique to your session. That is to say, I already know the server load is excessively high and what you were doing doesn't really matter much for them. I'll continue to work on it, though.
I did notice, however, that switching to the low-bandwidth version made a huge difference in the number of 503 errors being handed out. I'll look into making SMF (a likely culprit) more efficient later today.
-
I did a few things that I think should help with the 503 errors.
If you see any, please let me know and I'll look into doing more.
In the process of reducing the server load, I also made the forum slightly faster. The accumulation of all my changes may even be noticeable for some of you.
Tomorrow or later tonight, I'll look into fixing that ridiculously irritating formatting that SMF likes to insert into posts when the formatted view is enabled.
-
It definitely does seem faster.
Nice work, Trov.
-
Slow?
I sense no slowness here.

Please stop bumping old threads, there is a reason why no one posted on them for over four months.
