I imagine it was because people were going a little bit nuts with it. I was at +47, for crying out loud. Something's wrong when I have a higher rep than Clickbeetle. =]

I think we had the discussion about resetting the rep a while back, and we decided that it'd just end up more or less the same after a few months, and it'd have to be reset again.

Tsk tsk, resetting without saving.  Be glad I'm off duty from my day job as a one-man anti-resetting zerketposzt, or I'd give you a LONG lecture.  One with yes/no responses,  where you can't make the text scroll faster by holding down A.

"Let's get down to business, whaddya say? Because you may not know it, but you and I got issues to discuss.
First, let me just tell you what it is I'm doin' here. Just so there are no misunderstandings later on.
You, my friend, reset the Reputation, didn't you? Huh? Maybe by accident, maybe on purpose, but you pressed it.
Or maybe you didn't huh? Maybe you just went and turned the power off without saving. Sound familiar?
What? Sorry, what was that? I didn't catch that last bit. Did you just say I'm right? You did what I said you did?
Ah-HA!!!
All right, you listen and listen good, 'cause I get real angry when I repeat stuff I gotta say.
Resetting... It's like... Pressing an Emergency Call button. You press it and I gotta read you the riot act. See?
Also, you gotta SAVE before you turn the power off. If you don't save, it's the same as resetting.
Well, okay... That last part? I just added that. Why? Because I wanted to.
Forget about other sites for a minute, will ya?
I'm here to suggest that you try and run THIS site, GameTechMods, without hitting RESET. Got it?
I know what you're thinking: "Whether I hit RESET or not should be up to me. After all, it's MY site!"
Well, sorry. Rules are rules, okay? Know what I'm sayin'? Let's not make a big deal out of this. End of discussion.
This bein' our first meeting, I'll let you off easy. Think of this as a friendly warning from me to you.
Oh, one more thing. This is my job. I take it seriously. So next time you see me, it's nor more Mr. Nice Mole.
Oh, yeah, and another thing I guess I gotta say here...
I really watched my... language... here today. I'm not usually so... you know, so polite.
If I'm bein' truthful here, I gotta tell you... I been told I got what you call an acid tongue. I sorta... scare people.
Hey that's... who I am. Nothin' I can do about it. What, I'm supposed to say sorry for being me?
Look, it's nothin' personal. I ain't tryin' to be mean or cruel or nothin'. I ain't a monster.
For those people who get their feelin's bruised easily, I gotta apologise in advance. Just deal with it, okay?
The deal is, I get paid to be nasty. Crazy world, huh? Ha ha ha ha ha!!!
Well, I figure it's about time for me to get outta here.
So uh... Yeah. Here's hopin' I don't have to come see you no more. Now...

Thats true; I don't abuse the system, but due to my friends I'll probably have 8 or 9 before Sage and other great roboteers.

This is one of the problems we had before, wasn't it? The main builders/contributors group didn't really care, so they didn't rep each other as much as the group that hung around in the Junk Yard and actually gave a crap. Guys like FOTEPX, Jonzu and GF93. Who were, ironically, both the three most repped UP members, and the three most repped DOWN members. In order.

To remove a system?

He doesn't even need to remove it, he just needs to hide it or deny everyone access to the Rep Box.

I'm siding with NFX on this one.

And Hydro, the reason you repped me up is exactly what I was talking about; I didn't deserve a Rep +, So why did I get one?

I agree. I don't like the rep system in the slightest, it's just a platform for drama queens/kings/Jonzus. It should be for deserving it.
Title: Re: Rep Reset

Yup, every 5 days I'm just going to rep up any Roboteers that I remember, hopefully keeping the System somewhat in tact.
Title: Re: Rep Reset
Post by: NFX on May 06, 2011, 04:58:56 PM
This might sound like a bit of hyperbole, but I think the Rep system is simply a less structured Respect rating. And I reckon as long as every member can give or remove rep, then there's going to be the same problem with the Junkyard Drama Queens.
Title: Re: Rep Reset
Post by: cephalopod on May 06, 2011, 05:00:06 PM
I would say give access to AU and higher, but I think I'm fairly fair with it and kind of want to keep rep privileges >.<
Title: Re: Rep Reset
Post by: NFX on May 06, 2011, 05:13:58 PM
I'd say you were quite fair with it. We're kinda creating a dilemma here, about whether we should have it for everyone, and have the drama queens continue to uprate everyone for the sake of it, or have exclusive rights to rep changing for higher groups, which would probably make it fairer (assuming MNB doesn't go nuts with the brony stuff), but then the fairer regular members would lose out on it, which I think would be a shame.

I'm betting no one can right now, and he is still deciding whom can/can not give rep. He also didn't state who he has decided he won't ever allow to give rep. I just gotta think before I post sometimes I guess.
Title: Re: Rep Reset
Post by: NFX on May 06, 2011, 07:45:36 PM
I think Kujii's right. I'm unable to give rep at the moment, I think he still has to work out the users from the abusers, then the system might actually work. I figured we might get some bawwing or backlash such as FOTEPX's earlier outburst, but I think it's justifiable that you should have to prove you know what you're doing around the forums before you get access to the Rep up/down features.

AU and up IMO

This does seem to be the general concensus. There are a few reasonable regular members that don't abuse it, but their group is being let down a lot by the abusers and circlejerkers, which is a shame to deprive them of it for something that other members are doing. But for the moment, I'm in agreement with the AU and upwards idea.

Not all the AU are unabusive of the System either, in addition as you'll read earlier in the thread, for a unknown reason the System disagree'd with him attempting to function it that way?

The rep system is three votes pretending to be two. A +, a - and a no-vote. Not only that, it's too similar to the reddit system to use for one post you think is stupid and too different for one post you think is stupid.

It looks like it affects one moment for a person, where it actually is affecting every moment for a person.

Remove it from the profiles that a ppear whenever a person posts, and remove either the + or -.

He has gone back to the mountains fishing for trout.
You should notice that some of you are able to give rep now.....most of you posting here can't, but several members now can.

IMO the advanced user thing isn't a good idea because sensible guys like Marty or Doomkiller aren't advanced users, despite being solid contributors for a fair while.

That's what I was getting at. The trouble is, though, if we do allow every member to rep up or down, then the Drama Queens will abuse the system as much as they did before. I remember the discussion about individual members being granted access to the Junk Yard ,perhaps we could apply something similar for the rep system?

Not saying I would regardless, but that's just something you guys might want to know.

I'm guessing it's only Staff that can give rep at the moment. Just to see how it goes and such.

Well he did say most of us posting here can't.

(I'm betting that was the first trial on whom was good enough for it).

I suppose the list of people that can give rep will reveal itself in time.

98 is 20% cooler then 93, so I made a Typo to cause it to exist.

But were OT.

Actually, this has been discussed to death, I got nothing further to say.

Maybe so, but there's at least five years in it, matey. Therefore, a bit of a crucial mistake to make if you're going for actual age

To be fair, he did have something of a point. You did make those threads when your rep was going down. Hopefully the new system should help prevent that happening again, but you did take it a bit more seriously than you probably should have.

Indeed that was the case in the past, but not anymore. You've got to admit I've improved since the new changes were put in place though, right?

I would agree with that. But at the end of the day, it's ACAMS' decision as to who gets the privileges and who doesn't.

I'm surprised that no one's been stupid enough to say "Just deny the drama queens and such rep privileges"..
The answer: That would cause a heck of a lot more problems and flaming.

Anyways I'm happy with the way the rep system's going because now no one can really rep whore.

I'd like to know entirely how a lurker actually expects people to respect thier opinion.

Its something I've never gotten, they post so little that noone knows them when they post, so almost noone agree's with the post.

I'm surprised no ones asked to deny us that eit- oh wait, yes they have.

I kind of expecting this to flare up because I haven't started a showcase...
Title: Re: Rep Reset

It's not that you don't have a showcase, I think it might be - as Kujii said - the lack of knowledge about the lurker. Generally, a newcomer's opinion needs a bit of work, but it can sometimes be hard to determine who's been lurking for a while and who hasn't. It's a bit presumptuous, I know, but that seems to be how it happens.

I think you're right about singling out members to deny them rep privlieges. Given the Drama Queen tendencies, you will get some posts, or even threads, along the lines of "Why can't I rep? This is <expletive>, you obviously hate me", or things like that. That's the thing about it, the system will undoubtedly be abused much less, but we might end up with more bawwing. Though that's more of a job for the mods, if it does happen.

I've been here 8 months and I only just got around to even proving I know how to build a operating robot. I assure you I did not Jump down your throat on the basis of if you had a showcase or not.

Undoubtedly the ones that tended to abuse the system the most are the ones likely to make such a thread. The Bawwing itself will help Acams figure out whom can/can't give rep.

Sadly you're right about that. I think the smaller a community is, the more logic there is with the members. But that's heading off-topic.

Kujii might be right about the bawwing helping determine who gets the privilege and who doesn't, but it's not really as simple as that. There are members who might question a decision to keep them from something, because they would like to help out with it, as opposed to those who complain purely for being excluded from it.
