Use an animated GIF.

You could find one on the Web or make one by yourself.

I think there are softwares that can make GIF's from several pictures.

For cool animated .GIFs i use Macromedia Fireworks 8.
Its pretty easy with it.
You can see the splash of my "Drum 'n' mace" bot on my showcase for example.

Wait, when I put the gif file for my avatar, it just shows the first frame, and does not move.

If you are sure that the avatar is 100% animated GIF, then you must ask goose cos usually others dont have problems with animated avatars...

Really? can you give me a link  to the image you are trying to use? upload it on imageshack or w/e

I know that vbulliten sucks at resizing animated gifs. so make sure it is no bigger then 125 x 125

I'll have a try with Gimp. It seems you can do it easily with several layers.

Same here... I guess they are losing interest from the public due to the beginning of the great photoshop/flash era.
