Title: Foul Language by Moderators
Post by: Mecha on August 19, 2013, 03:53:41 PM
Listen, i know that the smart thing to do is to just report this, it says "report to moderator" but he is a moderator, so i thought i would share this:

The word censored is the F-bomb.
But if this is unnecessary or in the wrong spot, take it off, I just wanted to address this issue.

theres a "report to moderator" button on the corner of each post, if you see something you think goes against the rules just use that button.

i'm aware of that.,but the thing is, theres more than one moderator to sort it out. it'll reach someone other than naryar to fix it.

Profille > Modify Profile > Look and layout > Uncheck leave words uncensored if you don't want to see words like that in the future.

I know, thank you. but the point is it's a forum rule.

Profille > Modify Profile > Look and layout > Uncheck leave words uncensored if you don't want to see words like that in the future.

If this is possible, then why is it a rule that we can't swear?

Why not make it the default for it to be turned on, and give people the option to turn it off?

What kind of school do you go to? Anyways, I'd just make a quote and send it to Trov.

Wut
There is an option to show words uncensored and it's turned off by default IIRC

Exactly.

Why not make it the default to have it turned on?

Because if it was turned on it would show uncensored words? It works out better to have it this way.

Oh, I see.

I got confused.

I was under the impression that the option was a filter that, when turned on, censored stuff. Not the other way around.

My bad.

I must agree. Mods must show class. Not this cussing nonsense. I have always felt this was an issue, but never wanted to adress it because I would feel stating my opinion would result in an abuse of power, leading to a ban...

Do the search engines not know about Playground?

Trov has explained this before. Playground is off-limits to anyone who hasn't joined it so it won't affect GTM showing up on search engines.

Naryar should know better and I'll talk to him about it. He is an excellent moderator and I would be very disappointed if I had to take some/all of his powers away.

Go ahead and hit the "Report to moderator" button or send me a PM whenever you see any member of the staff misbehaving. I am their supervisor and they are your supervisors. I am able to see everything they do from within the admin logs/reports and I also read through all the posts that get reported to moderators.

As HA said, search engines don't see playground. They are literally just programs that run on servers looking at GTM as if they were merely visiting guests. The primary goal of their AI is to determine how much value our site would have to people using their services. As such, they find keywords that allow themselves to categorize and rank us (quite a bit more complicated than it sounds). They wouldn't necessarily know that the Junkyard existed unless we got reported by a human.

Since playground is an opt-in option without any porn, I doubt search engines really care. Unlike word filters that leave behind things like f***, ****, or even @$$, it is not immediately obvious to our guests that the section exists and therefore isn't the search engine's problem.

I would eliminate Playground in a heartbeat if it became obviously detrimental to GTM's longevity (SEO score, guest-member retention, etc.). In fact, I might do it anyways just to re-establish a friendlier atmosphere.... but not right now...

The filter is currently only swapping out ~3 swear words for asterisk alternatives. It is hardly good coverage and I would appreciate it if none of you count on your word choices being filtered. Also, please don't assume that just because you used leet or you mashed things together that it is any better. In fact, I'm almost certain that using filtered words has a negative impact on our SEO score. That's why, I try to remove everything that I see that could potentially detract visitors from our site. Search engines, like Google, also spend more time on GTM than ANY of us do so they are much more likely to pick up on posts that contain foul language/imagery before they get cleaned up. That said, it is better to get rid of any/all of the foul language regardless of their age because even an old post can do damage to our SEO score.

Sure, if you type the actual name of the forum in, but if you're just searching something related to GTM like Battlebots or Robot Wars, they'll omit us in favor of showing cleaner sites.

Hmph. Fine. although I am hardly convinced by that search motor argument, nor do I think too highly of newbies who think this should be overly clean.

I'll try reducing my swearword use. after all, it is better to be more original with my insults. Let's try it now...

Qwerty, you truly are a pox-riddled son of a mongrel dog when you dare to speak of class because you have none at all.

Technically, motor is a synonym for engine (although, search motor isn't right, regardless). In all honesty, I thought Naryar was just making a joke when he said it.

Technically, an engine is a type of motor, but yeah... Search motor is just wrong.

Okay, BOT please? :P

It's been resolved. Now we're discussing Naryar's abuse of the English language.
