Title: Does anyone legitimately care about this place anymore

Legit question

Do people actually care about this place outside of filehosting/tutorials and nostalgia

It's a place to check up on in my free time.

I enjoy the tournaments, though I'm disappointed that smaller events like the challenge board aren't getting as much love.  Maybe I'll put something up there.

Personally, I think my interest in GTM started declining once BOTM stopped happening.  No idea why, and it might just be correlation.

Yes. Basically the same reason as Kix for why. From what I’ve seen, GTM is most active when a) there’s more than just one game active on the forum, and/or b) something new/unexpected happens.

Not really. PWS is where I mainly go for actual discussion, but if I'm bored I'll usually lurk here to see what's going on that I can't see in the other discords

As a mod, I just try to keep it clean until it grows as a RR2 hub, then somebody more active and eager could take my place.

I check here a bit but now I spend most of my time on Smashboards mainly.

I would join the RA2 Discord but honestly I don't really feel much connection to many members here so not up for it. And those I sort of did have left a long time ago.
Won't forget my time here though.

Outside of nostalgia? Nah, but my nostalgia is  a pretty strong motivator, so I do care.

Honestly Discord has eventually made this place redundant for everything outside of tournament records/vids and filehosting, but this place acts as a repository for pretty much the whole of RA2 history and shouldn't be dispensed with if it can be avoided.

Serves as a good place to check up on the maximum of 3 bots posted every other week

I don't think anyone wants to delete the forum. more so just put a freeze on posting outside of the rr2 section

What's gained from freezing everything but RR2 tho?

idk why you have a hardon for killing this place. If it's as useless and abandoned as you say, there'd be no reason to artificially freeze posting as nobody would bother posting anyway. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I have to agree. No point freezing it, just let it run it's course.

Honestly, just to check up when I'm bored and have a place to keep tournaments hosted and archived when needed.  The only reason I haven't considered making a tournament Discord-exclusive is that it would be cluttered in organization, and just unnecessary overall.

Personally I feel the community has definitely moved to discord now. I don't think anyone showcases like they used to anymore here, just on discord. People don't post their reps in the "pay tributes with replica page", just on discord.

GTM is outdated now IMO. The download section and tutorials are the only pages I think people consistently still have use for.

That doesn't make any sense. There's still value in hosting RA2 tournaments here and people still might want a permanent place to post any bots they build. The showcase section still sees some activity.  I guess you could go ahead and shut down the off topic section since I don't see why anyone would sh**post on a forum now that Discord exists.

When people stopped making bots for it. And RR2 is a new Robot Combat game.

i do.

not sure why but

and like even if no one cares why arbitrary stop people from posting? its not like the discord is a good substitute anyway. obviously i agree with keeping it around as a record as well but it's still better than discord even apart from that

Discord is a trash platform where anything relevant is un-search-ably and un-sort-ably lost to time.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Someday the forum will split into RA2 and RR2 sections. Plus maybe a section for coordinating Robot Champions matchmaking with each other. Just let things run their course. GTM has been "just 6 months from death" for like 10 years.

This is GTM, it will never die.

Also being "around" for 20 days per year, eh, I wouldn't call that being around.

Came in for my monthly log-in to see this.

GTM holds a special place in my heart as it was the first forum I signed up to. 'MouldyKingBash' was the second username I came up with after realising that 'kingweevil' didn't fit the forum. I still remember being back home at the sweet tender age of 9, sitting on my crap laptop, downstairs next to my parents, trying to work out how things worked in the game and on a forum.

10 years later and from the outside, it looks the same. Forum's visuals have barely changed, some of the same faces, mainly still focused on the same game. A lot of progress has been made under the hood, for sure and it's nice that people are still around.

In the grand scheme of things, if the GTM forum was to shut down, it wouldn't affect me in anyway. I've made friends on here that have broken the forum boundaries anyway- so much so I've seen them in real life multiple times. It would be sad to see a lot of archival stuff be lost, though.

Bump.

I've mentioned it before but GTM has really played a part in who I am online today.

Thanks to a group of people who got taught me a bit of discipline and made learn the rules of the forums here it lead me to now.

Now I'm on Smashboards and Reddit with different interests than here. I've spoken about you guys to online friends in good regard a few times. To think getting over that barrier started here.

This place is like that old shop in a town centre. It very rarely changes but it doesn't need too.

Words like RA2, Stock, Robot Wars etc, have been a thing of the past for a few years now for me. However I owe a good bit to the community in who I am now.

i hate young people so i do not wish to use discord to interact with anyone and all the people who would actually care about the bots i wanna make are old dudes who are more active here, so personally i would rather this stayed up. there are a variety of things i would personally want to encourage to improve the site (a bit less endorsement of casual trolling, mods being harder on people bangin out slurs since i do see some occasionally when browsing showcases and it's 2020 ect, maybe some visual updates, the usual stuff with some injection of activity for tournaments), but overall it does its job as far as i'm concerned
