So I've noticed the spambots are still somehow getting through the image verification. They're getting too good at reading images.
But I saw on Topwebcomics.com that they have a pretty clever bot-stopper when you try to vote for comics. They have a picture of a comic character and you have to identify it. I think something like this might work on Gametechmods.
Like, when someone registers, you could have a picture of one of the stock AI bots (since everyone should know them) except not have the bot's name in the picture (maybe even have some random text to throw off spambots). Then you have to type in the name of the bot shown.
For example, you have a picture of Raptor, and ask "What bot is this?" and you have to type "Raptor" in order to register.
I don't see an option for something like this in the admin control panel, but maybe it's possible to do elsewhere?
Or else, simpler idea: ask the user to type in the text in the image backwards. It would take the bots a while to catch on to that at least.
All this is assuming, of course, that the spambots aren't just brute-force hacking their way in... in which case there's nothing more to be done.

I added somthing to RFSHQ that stops them well.
it chooses from a pool of questions we create... "what is 1+1", "how many days are there in a week?", or anything else we add to the list.
I will add it this weekend
-
Cool, I just cleaned up another Spambot mess this morn...
-
Huh. That sounds like a much simpler solution. I guess I was over-thinking the problem.
Hope it cuts down on the spam level.
-
maybe we should make them do some research for the questions, -
-what 3d program do you use to make 3d files in Ra2?
-Name at least one admin on this forum.
-can everyone host online RA2 games?
-
I think this is a great idea.
bots and people who haven't even play ra2 cant post anything
-
Not posted in for 4 MONTHS TODAY.
-
I was thinking, can someone do what Click put on the table ? We still have spambots and visibly they can bypass the "insert numbers here" system.
-
Actually, it doesnt matter what kind of question/answer system we have. Well made spambots just find the correct answer from the system database. Altough it is good to have something like that since many spambots cant do this.

You hit on the head one of the main inherent problems...
It really depends on how much time+effort the spambot's author(s) have put into it.
.

a bit of a bump, but the strange letters/numbers AND email verification keeps my brother's forum he runs spambot-free.
-
Hmm, might work.
One thing that might work is to use odd questions("Whats the Square root of 4?" "What does LCD stand for?" "How old is the earth?" ect.)
-
"who's the greatest spammer of all time?"
couldn't resist :-D
-
What's the complex conjugate of 2-5i?
How to you write the square root of negative 1?
Harder questions would be better :P
-
Don't want them to be too complex, we want them to think that this is a RA2 website.
-
. o 0 bump...
how about "what is the best motor in dsl for power?" ?
-
Ummmmm.... the Dual Perm?
-
thats a question for spambots, actually.
-
Or new members. What if some idiot wants to join the forum to post yet another DSL installation topic? =P
-
Or someone without DSL wants to join?
-
Yeah, remember nwbies like tankcat.
-
Just a heads up to ACAMS (or maybe other admins) the spam bot GodVIAGRA has been seen "logged on" to the site a few times today however I am yet to see any posts made by it
-
He just wants you to read his profile.....and succeeded apparently!
That is why I delete their info when I ban them.
-
Huh... I thought I banned that guy yesterday. And then I deleted that whole thread. Did I forget something and leave a foot in the door?
.
-
you didn't delete his profile and sig and email and all his advertizement crap.....but I did, he is nothing but dirt now.
-
Ok. Didn't know I was leaving any doggy-doo lurking behind.
(Actually I didn't know if 'Deleting' the user, also remove him totally, including the 'Banned' list [enabling a return]. NP, thanks.)

Sorry to bump or anything, but one idea that could work FOR NOW is to maybe close signing up for a while, find all the current spambots, get rid of them, then open sign-ups again.
But, in order to sign up, they need to wait, so, say, they send there information (adress, ect, that should be fake) and maybe have like some of us on the forum go through all the applications, then only allow those who should be allowd and look realistic let onto the forum, and the spambots have to wait forever :)
Its just an idea, sorry to barge in or anything, but its just an idea for the forum, as im getting as annoyed with the spambots just as much as anyone else on here.
Thanks
Wham

I think this idea would work well. One thing I just remembered, on another site, in the T+C, it said 'REMEMBER THIS WORD - YOU'LL NEED IT TO SIGN UP - *word here*'.
Would it be possible to do something similar, just put the word at the start of the signup page or something?
-
I just joined another forum and they have an effective anti spam bot idea.. it would take a bit of work but basically new members have permission to only post in this one particular thread.. you basically introduce yourself and after you do the Admin changes your permissions (if you want them on the forum) to post in any topic a normal member could it would be a way of containing spam to one thread and not the important parts of the forum
-
Hmm... it's a bit of effort though considering I don't see moderators on too much. It builds up and all, those new members needing permissions. Can't be automated or you just have the same problem as before, just with more code.
Unless I'm thinking of big forums, because this isn't exactly growing at any speed.
-
this was a rather small forum so it was less of a task.. but how many new members post on here anyway ? lol we have pages of ones with 0 post counts
