Title: The Picnickers

Well, at last, after 4/5 years of hesitation by my Dad and I, we are at the stage where we have parts to build a robot, but have absolutely no idea how to.

The name comes from the time we went to haven in 2007, to Roaming Robots, and for each of the four days, we brought a picnic to the front table. We sat next to a family who would later become Team Toon, and they remembered us five years down the line as 'The Picnickers', so quite a good name to go by.

We have no design yet, but the main plan is three or four spikes on the front, armored in breadboards, with the front panel being one sheet of 1.5cm thick plywood sandwiched between two 1.5mm sheets of steel, with the spikes attached to the back sheet of steel, braced by a bar.

I don't think they bought any of those parts. I think they killed some poor old lady on a motorized wheelchair and cannibalized it.

They use electric drill motors in wheelchairs now? :laughing

Well, ignore those last few posts. Here's the finished robot:

Uses that one amp drill battery pack, runs for a good length of time before dying. A sabretooth 2X25 lies underneath that fan, that black thing on the back corner is the surprisingly stable link (never even came loose) and it weights 4.1kg.

The bot was more of a trial to see if I can do these things, and it turned out well. I'm happy with it. DoorWedge is it's name, and DoorWedge 2 should fare much better in the arena than this run-around.

Also drawing up some beetle sketches, left the ones I did last week in France but I remember them well.

Looks pretty good, shame about the weight.
What thickness of ply are you using? Looks about 20mm - 25mm to me.

Full inch for the sides, half for the top/bottom. Extremely thick for the weight, but would go up to something like 2 and 1 inches respectively if I built to the limit (which I will next time). The wedge is 4mm aluminium, few scratches but hardy enough.
Actually, I'm pretty happy with the weight. Means it flies well :P

Can anyone with a beetle spinner tell me what they use for the weapon motor please? Need some suggestions to go of.

I'm using one of these in terminus and will likely be using one in a vs I'm working on, just to let you know though a spinner as one of your first bots is a challenge but by all means go for it.

Thanks for that suggestion, went for a similar turnigy in the end.
Anyway

Includes a 1.3 amp 45-90c nano-tech, a 1400kv 2826 turnigy and a 40a ESC, plus two eBay 1000rpm motors, a sabretooth 2x5 and a dx4 receiver. Please note that the wiring is by no means final, its only a test rig.
No wheels yet, but any recommendations? Looking at either smallest banebots or small foam wheels.

foam over banebots because they transfer less force back into the gearboxes when they get hit so you'll be less likely to break a gearbox

Yeah, go with foam wheels. The best way to mount them are the finger tech snap hubs, fallowed by Dave's hubs.
