Title: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: Natef on July 23, 2012, 07:59:07 PM
My first bot (still a WIP):

It's name is "Slim Pickens".

Would these make for good armor?

from what i've seen garolite tends to work great till it catastrophically fails. I'd go with thin (less than) 1/16" ti or steel.

also come up with a better team name...

I want to stay in the weight limit, so I was worried about how the other materials will work.

You can buy pre made packs at your required voltage, don't use over 6 volts without using a bec though or you will blow your reciever

From a first impression, the kit's chassis looks far too weak. I'd make your own chassis from better materials. Most of the parts look suitable though, though I really would reccommend upgrading to lipos.

Not so sure about team names, but I suppose that if you built a HW, you could call it the Bear Jew*   =P

*Just in case you're wondering, it's a reference to Inglourious Basterds

Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: SKBT on September 05, 2012, 10:15:46 PM
You want to make your wedge flush with the ground and straight.  Right now I can see it is not straight. This will inhibit your ability to get under other bots and cause funky driving characteristics.

Also you want to use plastite or wood screws in UHMW. Not machine screws. Even if you tap the holes. UHMW doesn't hold a fine thread very well.
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: Natef on September 06, 2012, 03:21:43 PM
It's not a wedge, it is going to be a rammer. I can't get one because of the receiver.
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: R1885 on September 06, 2012, 03:55:02 PM
The chassis you've got at the moment is certainly a wedge. I would also recommend a wedge over a flat-fronted rammer. A wedge allows you to take control of other robots, whilst a flat front does not.

Sorry I'm not sure I understand, your reciever does not allow you to do what?
It's due to its shape.
It looks like this:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12901__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_Receiver_6Ch_V2.html (http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__12901__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_Receiver_6Ch_V2.html)
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: Natef on September 06, 2012, 03:57:06 PM
It isn't a wedge. It just looks that way from the angle I took the picture from.

The receiver's wires would break because of the wedge coming down on it (they'll bend too much).
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: Conraaa on September 06, 2012, 04:00:06 PM
Using the screws on the side, could you make a external wedge to mount on the front?
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: SKBT on September 06, 2012, 04:05:32 PM
you could...

take the receiver out of its casing and mount it vertically.

do the above step but take the pins out of the board and solder the pwm cables directly into it and mount it horizontally.

switch to a spektrum radio and a orange receiver.

extend the wedge and put lightening holes in the bot somewhere.
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: R1885 on September 06, 2012, 04:10:11 PM
Move the batteries closer to the front. Move the receiver to the back. Problem solved.

The design is solid, yes, I just wanted to make the point that if your lines were perfectly straight it would look extremely professional and the wedge would ride flat on the ground and be much more reliable

While professional looks nice, the element of surprise is cool too. It is a bit of a sleeper.

I'm sure they saw it and were like "Look at this n00b...", but then it took second place. It's always awesome to prove the skeptics wrong.

Bought some stuff at Hobbytown USA to get started:

They guy there said I need an ESC that would turn itself off when the batteries are too low, but I'm not sure if the ones I'm going to get will do that.
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: SKBT on October 28, 2012, 07:15:21 PM
return that rx and buy a hobbyking orange rx. that rx holds the last command sent to it so it will continue to output the same command to the esc so even if the esc failsafes on loss of signal it will continue to get a signal.

you also overpaid for everything if you bought from a hobby shop.

you can always cut off the connector and put on your own. or if you are too lazy and have money to burn you can buy adapter connectors

Also, what are you calling it?

So Thunder Child is on its way to Kitbots.

Meanwhile...

http://postimg.org/image/4oj4bz3ab/ (http://postimg.org/image/4oj4bz3ab/)

I CAN EXPLAIN

I wanted to make the back part so I cut off the end of the original plastic chassis. I have a dremel that I found in my house, so I might go and cut of the top part and replace it with polycarbonate, and add some more to the back.

Post FI reflections:

Slim Pickens: Went 1-2 (Tap out against Hangar 11, Judges decision against Dust Pandemonium)
-Given to Alex Horne to work on
-Might give it 33:1 silver sparks. It was uncontrollable at some points in time
-LOCTITE THE FRIGGING MOTOR SCREWS, NATE!

Thunder Child: 1-2 (Tap out against Mr. Croup and Play n Crazy)
-Electronics intact
-Hubs and wheels fine
-3 of 4 motters most likely work
-Need new wedge + front panel
-Need to use battle hardened motters (I'm worried about making my own, though) and use bullet connectors (pete: what gauge wire/heatshrinks are you using for those?)

Positives:
-Got both robutts in the arena and working most of the times
-Won at least one match
-Saw friends
-Got recognized for being in one of Brandon's videos
-Saw great matches
-Learned new things

Negatives:
-Failed to redeem myself from last year in the ants
-Many friends didn't make it

What to do for Moto (besides what I mentioned already):

-Get Endgame ready with motters, a weapon ESC, and transmitter
-Get that one book Alex suggested
-Get a better toolbox (maybe)

That's pretty slick. Next time you replace some of those chassis components I recommend making the cuts a little cleaner. It's an investment, take your time with it.

I other news I will be working with another builder to make an attachment for my beetleweight. Two pieces of 0.0625 4140 steel welded together. It's very Shame Spiral-y.

The wedge is done. Thanks to my friend Jim for helping me out!

Slim Pickens is ready, too. After Bot Blast I'm planning on making a completely different wedge for it.
Title: Re: Team Mutually Assured Destruction
Post by: Natef on July 19, 2015, 10:20:33 AM
Here's how Bot Blast went:

Slim Pickens went 2-2. It's main issues were the gearboxes and an unlucky draw against a horizontal spinner. Most likely will be rebuilt for Franklin.

Thunder Child went 4-2 (with one forfeit that I didn't count) to get 3rd place. It just needs some replacement parts and it'll be good to go. The new wedge held up great, it just isn't as good against other wedges.

I also received the Best Driver award by a landslide vote, which was truly an honor.

Thanks to all the folks who competed and helped out, and all the folks who spectated and will hopefully become future competitors!

New 150 gram bot. Just needs a sharpened wedge and spare lectra lite tires.

Bot Blast was awesome.

I'm a bit bummed that the new Slim Pickens didn't do as well as i would've hoped, but now I know its weaknesses. 1 win, 2 losses.

But holy crap, Thunder Child was amazing. It took on 3 of the deadliest beetleweight horizontals (BEST KOREA, Circuit Breaker, and Silent Spring), and survived all of them. Only things I needed to replace were a motor, a side panel, and the original top plate I've used since 2013. 6 wins, 0 losses.

One of the biggest highlights of the event was a young boy (7-8 I think) who was at his first event, and was having the time of his life. Not only did he get to meet people that were on Battlebots, but he also won the antweight rumble.

Here's the intense final between myself and Silent Spring, belonging to Jamison Go (of Sawblaze and Overhaul fame).

B U M P

Currently working on rebuilding Denise:

Another builder offered to sell me the wedge from his 150g bot Mango Farmer (Yes I messed up the mounting holes, but they will be fixed).

(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/67893Mango Farmer (2).jpg)

A UHMW frame, with polycarbonate top and bottom. Like Mango Farmer, the motors will be glued in to place. I have yet to CAD the wheels, but the bot is about 112g right now.

Now a bit more PP3D-ish. Recently got a 3D printer so now I don't need to pay other people to make the chassis.
