We will be getting parts and building it ASAP.  Everything relating to help/discussion is done, so I assume this is the right time to start the build topic.

Crosspost from discussion-

Looks like a solid concept. Make sure to doublecheck battery thickness   vs. vertical space in the chassis, it's easy  to miss by just a hair and   have it mess with the whole internal layout.

I'd also suggest   once you get the parts, cut out thin cardboard mock ups of the armor to   do a final fit test before you cut metal. It's also not totally obvious   how the armor fastens together while allowing battery removal, so   that's something to think about while the parts are on the way.

7075 aluminum.

Also, The bot is becoming an inch longer to accommodate the battery.

How thick are your sidewalls? Are you going to tap the armor mounting screw holes or use nutstrip?

What is nutstrip?

What is nutstrip?
This would be a nutstrip(http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=3B2F55B134A9D73BDEB9A9114B87FD44.qscstrfrnt03?productId=25&categoryId=1 (http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=3B2F55B134A9D73BDEB9A9114B87FD44.qscstrfrnt03?productId=25&categoryId=1)) Very useful for holding a bot together.

I'm pretty sure we're just bolting the aluminum together, I'll ask my dad later tonight.

Also can you take the case off the reciever here?

if so, how tall is it w/o case?

Overall, you have a good design. If I had to recommend one thing it would be to get a lot of driving practice once you have your bot built, or before if you have access to a toy RC car with tank steering and a decent speed. What I've found while working on Battlewagon is that a robot of any size and a decent top speed is going to be somewhat twitchy. You'll need to get used to that.

I've been getting a lot of practice already using botapp, as it uses the same kind of control system.

I still need someone to answer my question before we can start getting parts...

Comparing it to the size of the transmitter, it's smaller than the one I'm using on a yet-unnamed ant. I don't know the specifics, but it's pretty small and should fit your needs. I'd say trim 2.5mm off of each measurement with the case on as a rough estimate.

Crap, I needed at least an eighth of an inch cut off. Now I need an even longer (!?!?) chassis.

The reciever is in a weird shape, what's its lowest point heightwise? If it's any less than .4875" then I don't have to redesign the thing again.

It shouldn't be bigger than that... It's a park-flyer receiver, so it's designed to be used on small RC aircraft.

and if it is too big you can de-solder the pins and solder the PWM cables directly to the board.

Possible problem

The charger I have says it only charges LiPos that have 1250-2100 mAh, and the battery itself is only 430 mAh.

What do I do and would it be easier to get a new battery or a new charger?
Title: Re: Team Ignition

what's the chargers brand/model? you might be able to adjust the charge rating to match the battery.

a 1250+ mah pack is lolverkill in any non weaponed bot. i think i use around 700mah per match in phoenix

I like the look of it. Make sure to check the weight balance on the real version before the event, and put the heavy stuff as far back as possible. If the balance is too far forward it can get stuck on its nose, which will suck.

I think the cardboard mock-up is actually a good idea. Gives you an idea of what it will be like before you start cutting your metal and you could probably even use the cardboard as a template when you do start cutting.

After a brief scare in which one of the ESCs stopped working (thank God we got it to work), we'll be leaving way early tomorrow for Bot Blast. Wish me luck!

Back...

-Got third place and the best driver award. Didn't think I'd do as well as I did.

-Downside is that the bot doesn't work anymore. Ripto killed it in the loser bracket final. All it needs is some new motors and it can drive, but most of the armor is toast.

-Lost my first fight to Guildenstern. He ate one of my Spark gearboxes, but the guy that drove it lent me a new one, and that was awesome. Beat Glorified Doorstop, Weed Wacker, TTI Wedge, Dust Pandemonium and a rematch against Guildenstern before losing to Ripto.

-Baby Weed Wacker won FW, DDT won AW, Mondo Bizarro won BW and Threecoil won Mantis. More details will be up after I get some sleep.

Post by: Badnik96 on July 21, 2013, 09:30:48 AM
Alright, here's how I did.

First match was up against Guildenstern, who I was really darn scared of. I managed to get under early and drive him around, but eventually I got flipped. I thought I was a goner, but FireArrow surprised me-I was able to torque-react my bot upright again. Unfortunately, I lost a wheel late into the match, then Guildenstern hit it in the back corner, sending it upside-down and driveless. So I got counted out.

Thought I was a goner at this point, that last hit knocked out one of the two Spark motors we had, and we didn't have spares. However, the guy that beat me offered a replacement Spark so I could get back into the game, which was awesome of him. We were able to get FireArrow fixed up and everything before the lunch break.

Next match was against A Glorified Doorstop, a neat little wedge bot with a drum. It was having some left over drive issues from its first match, so it was pretty easy for me to scoop it up and drive it around. The only damage it did was some scratched paint. I won an easy decision.

Weed Wacker was next, and the guy driving it used his 20-minute postponement to get it ready. Unfortunately, he never got the weapon working, so it became a really easy fight for me. There really wasn't anything he could do.

TTI Wedge was my next opponent, driven by the same guy who made Guildenstern. I wanted revenge, and I got some. I was able to get under early and often, never letting him drive me around. So, I won another easy decision.

Next up was Dust Pandemonium. I think this was the closest match I had all day. I was able to get under, but he also was able to get under me. A couple times in the match he was able to get under me and grind, and I thought that would give him the decision. Not so, as I won another decision.

My rematch with Guildenstern was up next, and I was really darn scared after last time. However, he had radio issues early on and almost got counted out before the fight started. Once he got it together, I was able to keep from getting flipped, and the most damage I took was a large chunk of the front wedge. I won what had to be a really close decision.

Next was the loser bracket final against Ripto. My wheels were toast after the last fight, and my only spares had been chunked apart by Guildenstern in the first fight. I still fought really well, not letting him get any hits on me until the last minute of the fight. His first hit bent the axle on the replacement Spark, and I couldn't drive with it anymore. I was still in the game though, and I was able to keep him from hitting me again until there were about 30 seconds left. This hit actually cut the rear panel in half and flipped me upside down. Not wanting to lose any electronics, I tapped out. Postfight inspection showed that he actually bent the gearbox, so I barely had drive on that side.

I was actually surprised to get the Best Driver award at the end. I didn't know I was that good :P

Agreed, but I wouldn't get anything too much thicker or i fear you'll begin having problems with movement, since the wedge sits directly on the floor. More weight and more surface on the floor means more friction, making it harder for it to move.

True. The plan right now is to go for the same thickness, just with a stronger material.

got one of the Sparks that got damaged against Ripto working again, but the one with the bent shaft looks dead. Might just be the ESC acting up again, I'm still fiddling with it.

Personally I wouldn't do that since it would make repairing it a nightmare whereas if you made it out of separate pieces and bolted it together repairs would be as easy as making 1 new plate rather than a whole chassis.

Been some time since any news. The milling of FireArrow's new chassis is going well, and Nocturne's parts should be ordered soon. Also, I've decided to use some recently-acquired money to buy a Saifu kit for my brother to drive. He's going to name it Beat 'Em Up. For those of you unaware as to what Saifu looks like, imagine Klazo minus the wedgelets or modified Lite Flites and you're pretty much there.

Hopefully we'll have a small fleet ready for Pennbots, if not just the two ants.

Chassis is made from one solid piece as promised. There are literally no sharp edges on this robot, they've all been milled off. Top spikes were originally weight-saving measures but were made into holding teeth with a vise and hammer. Has serious issues driving inverted, might bend the teeth further forward.

They look sloppy to me.

Even if they didn't, I still don't think they are a good idea. How possible is it to get stuck laying on it's wedge? The teeth just prevent it from righting itself, possibly. Definitely something to check.

Yeah we've tried it with two different wedges (one with teeth and one without) and neither can really right themselves. Also, the teeth originally weren't going to be part of the bot and had to be cut at the last second for weight measures, and I decided "hey these could be bent forward and used as holding teeth". The righting thing is a major problem though.
Title: Re: Team Ignition
Post by: HurricaneAndrew on March 08, 2014, 04:36:24 PM
Just cut all of the extra metal off the top of the wedge and add some ballast to the very back of the chassis to see if it will at least get it to fall on to it's top.
Title: Re: Team Ignition
Post by: Badnik96 on March 08, 2014, 05:12:27 PM
So we went back to the aluminum wedge, current plans are to bolt a piece of steel to the back for assisted inverted driving, spinner protection (the main weak point in the last FireArrow was the back end) and a further back center of gravity so it can (hopefully) self-right.

Also I realized battle scars are cooler than an impervious wedge :P

I considered your thing for a second andy but we're right at the weight limit as it is, and cutting off the top spikes isn't going to give us enough weight to do what we wanted to with the rear plate.
Title: Re: Team Ignition

Title: Re: Team Ignition
Post by: Badnik96 on March 08, 2014, 06:45:29 PM
might do that with the weight gained from the aluminum wedge, we'll see how much we have once we make the rear plate

Did as much wiring as we could with Nocturne. Weapon assembly is all set, as is most of the wiring, just need a battery now. The one I ordered from RMP won't fit so we ordered a new, smaller battery from Hobbyking. Similar stats so hopefully it won't be much of an issue.

Here's both bots together as they stand right now.

Title: Re: Team Ignition
Post by: Badnik96 on March 11, 2014, 09:43:30 PM
So Nocturne managed to break its weapon assembly and burn out an ESC in one night. So it's been pulled out of Pennbots. This gives us 4 months to fix things and get it up to scruff for Bot Blast, so I'm not too upset. I knew it'd be a rush to get this thing together for this anyway :P

FireArrow now self rights reliably and just needs a permanent mount for the rear steel plate and a coat of paint to be ready for next weekend. I hope more ants sign up, its gonna be boring with just us four wedges :P

So we need to get a larger pulley, which means a larger belt. My dad says we can get this together, but both speed controllers are now dead. Pretty much the main thing deciding as to whether Nocturne will be competing at Pennbots or not is if SKBT has extra vextrollers.

Well Pennbots was fun. FireArrow went 4-0 and took home the antweight title, Nocturne went 0-2 but beat Alex's thing once in a grudge match (we decided to do best of 3). Nocturne's getting pretty much redesigned entirely for Bot Blast.

I also guest drove D12 because Brandon's two bots faced against each other in the first round.

Neat. Glad Nocturne got to compete despite it being totally cursed and everything.
How did that guest drive of D12 go?

So I'm already thinking of plans to rebuild Nocturne for next time. My plans include steel on both the top and bottom, UHMW sides and wheel guards, an aluminum bar with tool steel teeth as well as a much bigger battery and a more powerful brushless motor (going up to 1100 Kv from 750). In 4 months I hope to have something that somewhat resembles a wider Last Rites.

update on things

Nocturne's parts have been ordered and with the exception of a back ordered motor should be here soonish. However with the confirmation that my Servo article won't be running until July I may need to make do with the crappy charger I have now.

Maybe I'll bring my busted hobbyking charger to bot blast or something and see if someone can fix it

Motors are mounted, we need to mill out one of the wheel holes a little bit because the wheel's rubbing up against it. Also we milled off the front edge of the robot so it's harder to catch.

I was gonna rebuild the whole thing with lighter materials and make it lower to the ground. Protect the wheels, give it a titanium wedge, all that stuff. Hopefully it'll be ready by the next competition I go to.

Ouch, what part failed, the hub or the shaft?

Hub, though the shaft was a little bent after the match. Dave hubs definitely aren't the best for battling a spinner. Going to get some snap hubs.

Nocturne spins! Turns out the extra washer we added put too much friction on the weapon. Now it works perfectly.

Today I opened up and cut off the connectors of some Vextrollers I had lying around. They'll be going into a tracked antweight drumbot I'm making for an ARC friend. Still need to finish modding them.

Drive system for Scarab (the tracked drum) is done. Uses the 22:1 sparks I won at bot blast last year (which are being discontinued, so I figured I might as well use them) and some vextrollers I got back when Nocturne's original vextroller blew. Now to wait for the rest of the parts...

Did some more work on Landshark today. The serrated sawteeth are finished, and every piece is now cut. The main wedge still needs to be milled, however. Also, the robot still can't drive because the pinion gears aren't the right size to fit the motor shafts, and my dad doesn't have the right tool to fix that at the moment.

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks it'll get wrapped up.

the wedge is 1/8 in steel and it takes up more than half the bot's weight

i win the wedge contest

bot blast was fun

FireArrow went 2-2, beating Ophidian and Dark Blade and losing to Satan's Segway and Dark Pounder. It held up perfectly and it just needs a new wedge for next time.

Nocturne also went 2-2, but its two wins were forfeits. It lost to Gemini and Colsonbot (!!!), of which the two fights were about eight hours apart. I've decided to retire this bot in favor of better things to come.

Landshark beat Catapult in round one, but his hit on my wheels shattered a gear in that gearbox, and due to things (like the ebay seller running out of motors so i couldn't order spares) it ended Landshark's day, leaving it at 1-2.

Due to how silly the brackets turned out, despite the massive disparity in the number of fights FireArrow and Landshark had, they both finished in fifth. Don't ask me how that turned out.

champions were Gyroscopic, Mondo Bizarro and One Fierce Bushwhacker

now i need to sleep. pics will be up sometime soon

Colsonbot was awesome. It was able to bounce off other bots like Shrederator would. I loved it when they added a hex key on the top of it to act as a way to point forwards, it reminded me of Megabyte.

new beetle. it may or may not be ready for franklin, gotta see how early i can get access to the machines at college. if not i can hook up nocturne with a bigger motor and run it instead (ive decided that was the issue the whole time)

landshark is going to be getting a complete rebuild for next year (including an active weapon!) details to come soon.

also in the works is a second antweight armed with your basic dustpan/saw arm. my goal is to cause a smaller version of the gloomy lipo fire

Looking god so far. Was the shoutout (is that the right word to use?) to 259 intentional?

I hope so, it's exactly what I thought when I looked at it.

Yep the homage to 259 is intentional. I was brainstorming a few nights ago and it just hit me.

ok so i very nearly had Nocturne working with a really powerful spinner and everything

and then the tinymixer shorted out thanks to a faulty solder joint

the curse is real

I think you might have pissed off a witch doctor somewhere.
Also, it would be nice to know how/where the joint failed. You do heat-shrink every connection, right?

I know exactly why the joint failed, it's because the wire was broken in half when i soldered it and I didnt notice.

I dont have any heatshrink but I wrap all my joints in electrical tape.
