Title: Team DSC
Post by: dragonsteincole on January 21, 2018, 03:06:48 PM
Figured I should post this here, some people have seen this, some may not have. Based on the MW bot of the same name, Sir Lance-a-Frog is the first experience I've had making an actual Rl bot, although it's now a lifter instead of a HS. Following video is a first test of the wiring and motors, hence the unique battery placement.

There's still a lot to do as i'm attending UWE on Feb 10th as my first ever event, but it's become very real all of a sudden. Massive thanks to Craig/Cephalopod for all the help and guidance he's shown me during the making of SLAF. And Doot, Thyrus, Arcane for the encouragement.

Needs a little faux sword like the RA2 version to get the vibe just right.

Once I get the lifter sorted properly (need to replace the stand-in with the real steel and/or HDPE one), the rest of the spare weight will go on decorating the sh** out of it. There will be a lance.

Well one thing is for certain, I like what you are building so far. Seeing a proper lifter/flipper in a robot combat scene dominated by spinners and wedges makes a real difference. Once you get everything sorted, I would love to see the finished version.

Just add a plastic one on a spring... Anyways luv your bot <3

One trip to B&Q later... there's just enough space inside for the wiring, and still working on important parts before more decorating happens.

New addition is the 3mm mild steel lifter/tank plate. Will be facing at least 1 vert spinner at UWE so hopefully I can tank the spinner and slow it down, whilst shoving it around. Next task are to give the plate an edge, and work on a lighter, wedgier version for less/non-damaging bots.

Loving the improvements that you've made for your bot. That 3mm steel plate should come in handy, and hopefully the plate should do its job pretty well against spinners.

The only spinner I have in my Heat is a bot called Eric the Destructor. Vert spinner with an aluminium disc. Whilst that would still make a mess of HDPE (which is 90% of my bot), it will blunt pretty easily on steel, so the plate is necessary. Think i've got a rammer and another lifter so a lighter plate would be better as it's not required to soak damage.

The photo doesn't do it justice, there's a lot of damage :dumb)

A tired, beaten, bruised Sir Lance-a-frog as he currently is after the UWE Beetle Brawl. Won my heat with 2-0 (3 bots per heat) beating Eric the Destructor (vertical spinner) and The O'Neill (4WD pusher), but then lost in the Round of 16 to K2 (Eggbeater), and finally the loser's melee, which involved Lilith (front-hinged lifter), Danger Zone (lifter) and the monsterous X-301 (drum spinner). X-301 is the main cause of the damage, which includes a knackered wheelguard, broken gearbox and many gouges and missing chunks.

However, I could not be more pleased with how it performed, I feel my lack of driving skill was my downfall in the two loses, as I drove into the pit in the K2 fight, and I think the gearbox failure assisted my drive into the pit in the loser's melee. Aside from that, SLAF gave me no grief or issues.

Shoutout to Craig/Cephalopod, who finished an amazing 4th with Mr Cat's Mouse House! And for the assistance and patience he's had in guiding me through building SLAF. I cannot wait for the next event.

Glad to see you had fun. Any upgrades planned? or just repairs?

Updates are planned, because I'm going to be remaking a lot of parts, as the hits from X-301 pushed bolts/nuts into the HDPE to the point where a lot of it will not sit straight. So whilst I need to remake parts I may as well tackle a few redesigns - using titanium for the lifter instead of the 3mm mild steel I had. A shallower lifter and maybe more 'useful' travel on the lifter itself would be nice too, the servo I have was beefy enough but I couldn't get under or lift as high as I wanted to. Some more robust hinges and motor mounts, better back panels not held on by meccano brackets.  :dumb)

So lots of ideas, but it was a great experience.

Brief updates because it's 4am.

Bot is 99.9% ready for Burgess Hill weekend on the 28th and 29th of April. Last task will probably be adding decals IF they arrive in time. The middle part of the image  is what is planned, if the decals turn up on time. Aside from that, SLAF is ready to go.

New locking bar, decorated because why not? The locking strap I used at UWE was not technically allowed, but seeing as it's a low-impact servo with little edge to it, the locking bar is more just precaution than anything else.

I'm looking forward to the event, another chance to fight is great, but it will also be my first time attending a HW live event in any capacity, so I'm looking forward to experiencing that. Post Burgess, I hope to go ahead with the updated version of SLAF, but I do have another trick up my sleeve regarding another update.

SAW Lance-a-frog. Brushless sawbot able to keep pressure on the cut. Could be good, could be an utter assbot. I plan to find out. :dumb)

Quite a difference from last time I posted here. Bigger, new 2mm titanium plate at the front, and with a paintjob that is not going to last a second in proper combat. I'm looking forward to fighting again in July at BBB3, hopefully gearing up towards the Euros in October.

It should be at the BBB3 Beetle and Ant event on the 15th July, but it's a little big to be in with the ants  :dumb)
