Guess who just got a wedge!

Stats:

11.5lbs (Hobbyweight)
2 18volt Drill motors
4" colson casters
1/8" thick 4130 wedge attached to a 1/2" dia 4130 shaft.

Yes the shaft is going to stay like that so it can't get stuck on its side.

I'm sensing a problem with the wedge. It might fold under itself, making it useless.

I'm sensing a problem with the wedge. It might fold under itself, making it useless.

I'm undecided about putting a couple of screws in the sides as stops or dremeling out the shaft holes and sticking some 1/8th" key in there. I've still got about 7 months to think about it though. :P

Summer build plans...

30lb:
flipper bot (un named, un decided basically just an idea right now)
Uprgades for Shish: Titanium front armor and wider wheels

12lb:
Nothing really maybe make wheels guards for it?

6lb:
Thing-A-Ma-Bot (I have no clue what to build for Botblast and its probably going to end up being a joke entry made purely for entertainment purposes)

I was thinking more along the lines of a teapot or toaster with a hammer for the 6lber but shell spinner is defiantly out of the question because of my lack of machining ability.

I'm already pushing 4 hp with what I got in it now. I might switch to dewalts though but that would require a bigger vantec and a battery with more capability.

Just FYI, in Apollyon I'm running 18v dewalts on 6s with the Holmes Hobby SC, and in Moros, 5s with the same speed controller. They work well and aren't too pricy at $100 a piece.

Wouldn't bother with the waterproofing option, and they've been hilariously durable. Only failure was a direct hit from steel shadow.

When you said high pressure I thought you were referring to HPA. :P

There is the "dead zone" between the bumper and the lexan at Robogames but NERC doesn't have a "dead zone".

If you're interested, Explosion uses the following:
 - 50mm bore, 80mm stroke HP ram
 - 1 Burket Valve
 - 600ml Gas Bottle
 - Paintball Bottle Buffer Tank

If constructed correctly, that should get you a rather powerful flipper :P

Yeah, I never really got a hold on why American flipper designs are more boxy compared to the UK's.
Probably for more dedicated surface area to the robot itself and protecting the internals.

The "American" flipper style looks so much cooler and menacing than a wedge does. :P

I think something like this (https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/90542BH.jpg) looks so much better than this (http://roamingrobots.wikia.com/index.php?title=Iron-Awe_5&image=L_4bb710274a0a5dc7f7bfe1a580c47363-jpg) but that's just me

I think that a bot like Toro looks cooler than Iron Awe, but Iron Awe is more effective by a long shot. Toro style throws upwards, Iron Awe throws bots farther away to get them over guardrails and stuff.

Technically speaking though, would it be more efficient to have a arm go vertically up with little change, than a huge sheet that travels in a more circular motion. You'd have more force, speed, and less drag.

Bot Update

Phoenix: 30lb flipper, about 1/2 way done, and has a larger ram than Explosion. It still needs to be wired and pneumatics need to be connected.

DoorStop: I've build a new 1/8" thick chromoly plow as an alternate weapon instead of the wedge. (Its kinda like Ice Cubes weapon)

That was the original plan... Until I came to the realization that i'm not that great of a machinist and probably wouldn't get the drum balanced. So the drum is on hold until I improve my skills or pay Whyachi to do it.

Flipper looking great, what are you going to be using as armour?

Wary of how much a lack of buffer tank will effect it though :/

1/16" lexan on the bottom, 1/16" Ti for outer shell and 1/8" chromoly rear plow

My system only gets 12 shots without a buffer tank. If I add one more air will be needed to pressurize the system which will take away from the total shots I have which is already very low. Buffer tanks are typically only needed to make up for a "low flowing" component in a system such as after a regulator. As of now it's better not to have a buffer tank.

Well, a buffer and smaller gas bottle could infact get you more flips. For example, Kronic has 2 gas bottles and no buffers, but IA6 has 1 gas bottle and two buffers. Iron Awe gets a lot more flips, and is more powerful due to having space to allow expansion, whereas in Kronic, liquid gets through the system and into the ram, wasting a lot of gas.
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: SKBT on July 24, 2011, 08:25:41 AM
I never though of gas expansion when designing my flipper. :P

Unfortunately I took Sage's advice and designed my chassis around my components and there isn't any room for a buffer tank without a complete rebuild and redesign of the chassis so the buffer tank may come in a future rebuild if my current system doesn't work great.

Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: SKBT on July 24, 2011, 08:55:19 AM
600ml or 20oz depending on where you are in the world.

I only get 12 shots because I have a low pressure system that opens and closes the full pressure system.

Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: NFX on August 16, 2011, 07:02:19 PM
Sportsman, IIRC, 30 lbs. Or about 13kg, which equates to a UK Featherweight, amirite?

Looks pretty awesome, though, how much weight have you got left for armour and such?
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: SKBT on August 16, 2011, 08:54:26 PM
Yep its a sportsman 30 which is equvelint in weight to 13.6kg.

Right now it weighs 21lbs (9.5kg) without armor. With planned armor it will weigh an anorexic 24lbs (10.8kg). The remainig 6lbs will go towards interchangeable stuff like an anticrusher web, rear plow, or a whatever else I think of.
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: Somebody on August 16, 2011, 10:05:07 PM
My idea is for something that makes the flipper wider for fonts against HS. It currently is comparatively skinny, and a good HS will knock it aside.

2,700lbs of thrust
That's a lot of thrust. Should be very powerful.

It should flip other bots about 3-6 feet in the air, oh and it will lift a car. (I haven't tried it yet because I can't find anyone who's willing to let me try it on their car)
Now get working on those attachments!
I did, the plow that I posted at the top of the page can also be mounted on Phoenix. I also came up with stupidly simple anti crusher armor that isn't worthy of a picture.

Two 550's @18v with a 36:1 reduction, the same motors I use in my other "big bots".

Looks awesome, I'm only worried about the seemingly fragile stuff at the back a bit.

The only slightly fragile thing is the "tail" at the back of the bot. (The flipper piviot mount is TI) The tail is only there to keep the bot from doing a backflip when it misses a flip.

So I have some sad news to report. My source of drive motors (Harbor Freight 18v drill motors) dried up. I don't have any spares so as of now I have no way of maintaining three robots through one event so currently I'm debating about pulling Shish, and DoorStop and only running Phoenix unless I can find some replacements. I don't have money for dewalts or banebots gearboxes so don't suggest them.

Stats I'm looking for for the motors are 550 RPM after the gearbox, 18v,  size RS550 motor, single speed

The motors looked like this (http://www.teamrollingthunder.com/Kitbots/550_Drill_motors/cordless_drill_motor_550.jpg) and the drills looked like this (http://www.manufacturer.com/upload/product/6537031/Cordless+drill_0_desc.jpg) if you see anything like that drill in a store PM me with the details; brand, store, ect.

So I have some good news and some bad news...

The good news, today I was able to make 3 1/2 FrankenmotorsTM from other broken gearboxes and motors.  I also have two other spare motors. The bad news is they are coming from DoorStop so unless something else happens, DoorStop wont be at the Franklin.

Question: Your flipper; how does it get under things with that extremely high wedge?
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: NFX on September 04, 2011, 07:20:21 PM
It only gets under it with the tongue on the front, then gives it a ludicrously powerful pop, tossing it high into the air.

Compare that to Explosion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYbIupIVAhk&feature=channel_video_title# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYbIupIVAhk&feature=channel_video_title#)
(Remember you have the bigger ram)

That's what a buffer tank does, I would seriously consider trying to stick one in there
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: SKBT on September 25, 2011, 09:28:51 PM
But flow is limited by the smallest dia component of a pneumatic system. I run 1/4" id plumbing so how does adding essentially a larger dia plumbing improve the flow when it is still only going through 1/4" tubing to get to the ram? I don't understand.

Also this was at 600psi, not a full 850psi.
Title: Re: Team CWG
Post by: Somebody on September 25, 2011, 11:24:51 PM
Explosion's arm also goes farther. Phoenix's doesn't have a whole lot of travel.
Title: Re: Team CWG

A good portion of the difference is a geometry/physics issue brought about by the whole "no wedges" rule for the sportsman class.
Title: Re: Team CWG

What a buffer does is give the liquid more room to turn into the gas, vastly improving the power

Right now you'll be getting liquid in the ram

Phoenix, now with decals and a swish cheesed flipper arm.

Also I've got some fun alternate armor configurations for Shish for next weekend. I removed the siphon tube from the CO2 bottle on Phoenix so now it doesn't draw as much liquid CO2, theoretically allowing the main tank to act like a "buffer tank" allowing the gas to expand before going into the ram.

What if I was to say that its a complete control style clamping lifter?

The smaller "phoenix arm" is the top clamp arm of the claw.

The ram is for the main "lifter" and the dewalts are for the drive.

If I finish it for moto it will replace Shish-Kabot in my lineup.

Technically, that is correct, but the angle of thrust cannot be horizontal, as the "brick" would simply fall under gravity. You need to have enough of a downward angle to overcome the vertical force of gravity, and you'd need to have the axis of thrust going through the center of gravity to stop it from aimlessly spiraling around itself.

A primitive example of a blueprint. It was found inscribed on the wall of a cave in the region of southern Egypt.  :gawe:

All very precise, though. Hopefully there's not too much in the way of errors.

Looking quite good, it's been built almost in the style of your RA2 bots. Hopefully it should do reasonably well, I wonder if wheelguards of some description would have been useful.

Yes there was. Dick Dastardly was a horizontal spinner built by a guy who used to be on here (zipdragon64)

So... now about how the event went.... Dick Dastardly/Muttley fought as a 6lb multibot and went 0-3 at BotBlast. It was fun though all its fights were very entertaining.

it's been built almost in the style of your RA2 bots.
I fully support the use of a large bash bar... RA2 or IRL

wonder if wheelguards of some description would have been useful.
yeah... about that... it got a wheelectamy pretty much every fight. Wheel guards will be added before it fights next.

Odd, the only damage I see are the wheels on the back.
Also, I love the use of extra lite flites(Lets see who else knows what I'm talking about)

Odd, the only damage I see are the wheels on the back.

It's got a couple of nice gashes on the bottom and a few small dents in the bash bar.

Also, I love the use of extra lite flites(Lets see who else knows what I'm talking about)

the rubber vibration isolating mounts that most people use felt too stiff for a 3lb and I had a couple of 1.25" lite flites in my toolbox and then that happened.

HF drill drive 3" wheels, low pressure, maybe 2.5" bore ram cause I have one lying around.

angle drilling is a pain.

I'm not going to camber the wheels on this bot. It would require me to make the bot taller and it would track funny upside down.

Maybe you can turn this into the world's first ever popup, idk, maybe by making the flipper shorter and making the end look like a hook....

I can't see how that would be worth the effort. Surely a proper flipper would work a lot better in real life.

The 30 pound sportsmans class is about having fun and experimenting with designs, not beating everybody.

I'm not saying people shouldn't, just I can't see why they would when it wouldn't really work.

cause i already have a normal flipper and i think the idea of splating another robot against the lexan would be funny.

Because not everybody wants to build a boring, generic wedge with a long metal plate that lifts up and down, heck that's almost as bad as building another 3 lb Last Rights. Sorry but not everybody involved in competitive robotics is a total tryhard like you are.

I can't think of anyone involved in competitive robotics that isn't a tryhard. I think you have to be :P

little late to respond to this but i'm anything but a tryhard.

so me and one of my friends got an opportunity to design and build a tourguide/telepresence robot.

this is a picture of the preliminary design. it could either moonlight as a crappy battlebot or a tiny FIRST bot.

the bowtie thing is a screen mount and is on a 4 bar arm to keep it perpendicular to the ground.

i'll keep you guys updated with design progress on my blog.

old Shish-Kabot hasn't fought in like 2 years...

i've already gutted it for the esc, battery, and radio for the new one. i'll keep the frame around but i probably won't fight with it again.

still playing around with the width on the new version... looking at around 13x13" without the spike

It's missing one of the carbon fiber inserts and the wheel guard never was bolted on at the front, so it should just be a matter of bending it back into shape.

But there may be internal damage that we can't see.

so to answer a couple of questions.

scrambles did it in the rumble.

it puked its escs and drive motors out and threw them across the arena.

and went 0-2 with a derp loss to el destructo and a forfit loss to colsonbot.

frame and weapon are fine. drive and wheelguards will be changed for next event.

Oh geez. Thought you were gonna have wheel guards.

i was, but someone stole (or i lost) my .375 steel and i found a piece of .5 steel so i ended up milling the .5" frame down to .375 and lost the wheel guards.

i'm probably going to bring ReEnforcer back for moto as a more legit wedge

they are 550 motors so anything from 12-30lb drive motors. this bot is 90% parts that were in my locker at the machine shop or on my desk. i'm probably going to buy smaller 3s packs so i can run on 6s. its going to be silly fast.

titanium and aluminum are roughly the same weight. I was using .125 aluminum before. now I'm using .06 titanium which is roughly 1/2 the thickness.

they are .09" random alloy steel now. last time it fought it was like 2lb 7oz with like .032 spring steel wheelguards.

it will be at franlkin if it happens, if it doesn't i will try to EPICROADTRIP up to the MIT event

i don't think i've actually seen a finished picture of your 3lb. whats your blade height at?

thats because it's not finished yet :V

still need to get the weight under 3lb

blade sits at about 1/3" off the ground, but it's so thick that it actually takes up most of the front of the robot. I'll need to measure where the tooth sits at tomorrow

its been a while and a lot of stuff happened.

well we went to mit and took 2nd and 3rd with robo rooter and spongetron failwheels

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/s480x480/10154078_1012463125446544_8803434073479012244_n.jpg?oh=9a766ec08f299c7695f9136bcd927c81&oe=54F4C227&__gda__=1422091234_25753eb98aec7af834fb8ed41c0b44dd)

robo rooters hubmotor ate itself and i had to go wedge mode for the rest of the event.

spongetron roundwheels was pizza party inside a spongebob pinata. it won fights. we don't know why

(https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xap1/v/t1.0-9/q85/s480x480/10299966_1015924091767114_8776565885622406782_n.jpg?oh=aca966eca3346de60f10b744f7d0dc33&oe=54C637CE&__gda__=1421138907_215c220ee2d5784b1f279f7d542061c3)

i redesigned and machined teeth for drumthing and it grew a toad sticker.

and super dpmi is almost done. just needs wheels installed and paint

Spongebot was frickin blessed man. Beat D12 on an audience vote then beat Nocturne by FF before somehow disabling Mondo Bizarro

it also just barely lost to robo rooter WEDGE OF SADNESS

day #2 of the build. it has reached the roller phase of pretendobot and the weapon spins up. its like 3x the size of my actual 12lb. 5" wheels for the win

going to be building a new 15lb because super dpmi was well dumb...

same drivetrain as super dpmi and same weapon motor as drumthing. it should be pretty potent.
