Title: Clockwork Robotics (Formerly Death Robotics)
Post by: Velocity EVO on November 26, 2010, 11:37:31 AM
Yep thats me... my team. It consists of me, when the bots are built. I'll of course be team captain, driver and bot designer. My mother, transportation and constantly nagging me, and my stepdad.... a couple of friends might join me too.

My current plan is to build a featherweight. It will be modified from an RC car i have. Im planning to remove the top. and replace it with some aluminium.... or maybe steel. Take off the bumper on the front and replace it with a scoop. Also it will have a rollcage

Here is the current sketch i did a few months ago

http://s1131.photobucket.com/albums/m558/TheycallmeMrVEVO/?action=view&current=drawings001.jpg (http://s1131.photobucket.com/albums/m558/TheycallmeMrVEVO/?action=view&current=drawings001.jpg)

So.... there you have it

Great to see potential new builders coming along.

PLEASE scrap the RC car idea, it will end up as a modified RC Car, not a FW
No rollcages, they don't work, just make it invertible
Use HDPE, its really easy to work with
Don't use the cheapest parts available to you, they are false economy, you will spend more in repairs than you will with a better part

I don't want to say that our robots are the best, but try and build something along the lines of annihilation, it was easy to build, has NEVER broken, and is quite an effective pusher. Try to make it look original however

Good Look :D

Good point.

The problem will be making the chassis. It it was made of metal or steel, problem is i cant weld.

Also the designs name is call Scoopertron, was gonna rename it Shove It.

Maybe i should have stuck with antweights 1st

DP: Also, if you have enough HDPE armour, not even an axe can get through it (Crushers maybe)

No, I'd go for a FW, go into the world of roboteering head first :D

Make it out of HDPE:
http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/HDPE_Sheet.html (http://www.directplasticsonline.co.uk/HDPE_Sheet.html)
Only use the black HDPE, they may appear the same but the white HDPE is a lot more brittle

Don't call it scoopertron, we already have a bot called tron attending, it would be confusing XD

DP: Also, if you have enough HDPE armour, not even an axe can get through it (Crushers maybe)
HDPE is underestimated, its awesome

My advice:

If you are on a budget Harbor Freight 18 Volt Drill Motors are great. I use 4 of them in my bot and I consistently finish in the top 3. (You can get them here http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=D9D840EBCBDC4C577C1F2C842FFDD1B0.qscstrfrnt06?productId=6&categoryId=1 (http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=D9D840EBCBDC4C577C1F2C842FFDD1B0.qscstrfrnt06?productId=6&categoryId=1) for $25)

Colson Caster Wheels are good and these hubs allow easy mounting of a Colson Caster Wheel to a harbor freight or drill motor http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=D9D840EBCBDC4C577C1F2C842FFDD1B0.qscstrfrnt06?productId=5&categoryId=1 (http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=D9D840EBCBDC4C577C1F2C842FFDD1B0.qscstrfrnt06?productId=5&categoryId=1)

If you don't want to work with metal UHMW Plastic and Lexan Glass are great. Lexan glass is the same stuff used in arenas to contain bots when they fight. UHMW is virtually unbreakable.

For a scoop or wedge 4130 steel or 6ALV Titanium are good. They are both very strong materials. My bots new lifting spike is 6ALV Titanium.

For a metal frame 2024, 6160 or 7075 grade aluminum are all good. 6061 is about 1/2 as strong as 7075.

If you want or need CAD software you can get it at http://students.autodesk.com (http://students.autodesk.com) if you are under 18 and have a E-mail that ends in a .edu

Good luck

Thanks for the advice SKBT

When i get started. I'll keep these written down.

I also had a plan for "Mini Merlin" but it would be rather difficult to keep to the weight limit

List of components you need:

S/C
Transmitter and Reciever (preferably Futaba)
2x Cordless Drill motors
2x 8:1 Gears (to attach to the drill motor spindle)
A lot of chain (making sure that the width of the chain is the same as the gears)
2x or 4x 32:1 Gears (2 if you want the robot to have 2 wheels, and 4 if you want it to have 4)
2x 16V NiCads (You need a spare one just in case)
A lot of wire
2 Anderson's Connecters (Or Dean's - I use Dean's but you can use Anderson's, just means that you have less weight for the weapon, if you want one)
1.5m x 2m Sheet of 5mm HDPE - trust me, I ordered the 1cm one. BIG MISTAKE
Good cutting equipment
A lot of angling tools.

I use Cordless Drill motors. Trevor Wright said that my robot will scoot along the arena floor, like a pondskater on water.

Well I don't like them, this is much a matter of oppinion however

May I suggest this for a very simple but effective design:

This is just an example of how simple your robot should be

I'd personally go with a Spektrum brand or another 2.4 GHZ radio. 2.4 GHZ radios hop frequencys to avoid frequency clashes.

Also if you want 4 wheel drive just use 4 drill motors. (its lighter and has more power than two motors chain driving 4 wheels)

If you decide on 4 wheel drive a 2.5 AH battlepack is great. It will get you about 5 minutes of run time at full power. I use one of these in my bot. http://robotcombat.com/products/BPK-CP2500-18.html (http://robotcombat.com/products/BPK-CP2500-18.html)

As for deans plugs I found a cheaper chinese knock off http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10788 (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10788)

In some ways, IRLroboteering is just like RA2

In this way:
Minimise empty chasis space

Not in this way:
MOAR RAZORS :P

I have a DX5e for my bot. It works great. For a non weaponed bot you only need 2 channels. You could get away with a DX3. I've seen them used on robots before.

I think you should worry about first building a working drivetrain chasis and then worry about a wedge or scoop. But to answer your question. I'd personally go with a wedge.

FYI if you are going to go with 12 volts... just so you know most automobiles operate off of 12 volts as well.

I mention this because there are many motors in a car that could operate nicely with a 12 volt battery.  Particularly power seat motor and power window motors... slow but have insane torque.  You can get these motors pretty cheap at your local car scrapyard, you just have to be armed with tools to properly remove them.

Oh, and a 12v battery is nice to use when testing car stereos without having to hook them up in the dash.

Nice! It'll be great to see another old RW favourite back in action. I mean, we've already seen machines like Behemoth, Stinger and Onslaught (and once it's up and running, Mortis) in there previously, so why not? All they need is for Cassius II and Chaos 2 to return, and I can die happy  :approve:

I also heard a rumour that Firestorm might be returning, but I'm not certain.

This is some VERY pleasing news to hear. And I do hope Firestorm gets back into the action. Love that bot.

Then I shall toss Steely effortlessly over the wall >:D

Anyways, Firestorm, it's a possibility, I'm not saying how though, you'll have to work that out yourselves

Bloody heck! Nearly a year since the last update on our team.

Okay so at the FW UK champs we performed... Not so good (From what I heard, I wans't there) We have now purchased Bulldog Breed from the original owners. And I pray for the life of me that Matt doesnt sell it, it's all in working order and performed at the guilford show this year.

My FW, still no progress made (I'm such a lazy slob ain't I?) and it's currently sitting under my bed.

Why would you buy a used robot? It takes like 98% of the fun out of the sport.

To be fair though, if you had the opportunity to buy a great classic bot wouldn't you ?

Some people like restoration more than building from scratch.  I imagine it can't be fighting fit after such a long state of dormancy, compounded with the damage X-Terminator did.

Actually, going on the pictures that were posted on the fra forums it was in fighting condition as the team used it in the live shows after robot wars which is why the wedge is a different shape but the wiring had to be redone IIRC

Yep, I'm pretty sure Bulldog required no or very little restoration.

I think the reason people buy robots is generally because they are inexperienced and so hope to learn while maintaining it before they attempt to build one themselves. Having said that, team Avenger seem to have bought and sold loads of robots now, in very quick succession, which does confuse me.

I know I wouldn't want to buy a robot above making one, possibly except if it's something I used to love on Robot Wars such as Firestorm :P

In regards to the Team Avenger buy/sell comment, I have no control over wether they get bought or sold by us. I generally leave it up to Matt (Even though I find some of his choices questionable) and that's that really.

My FW design plan has changed since the last year, me and Matt came up with a Maelstrom shaped rammer with wheel gaurds on. And hopefully (Once I pull my finger out my ass, not literally) I'll try and make an AW of my own, possibly and AW Limpet or something to get started with.
