Well, somebody has a high opinion of himself...
« on: November 15, 2008, 07:27:02 AM »
Yes, folks, I will be attempting to transcend virtual robot fighting and build a real fighting machine: a middleweight shell spinner named Flogging Maulie. I'm currently trying to get a team together in my school.

I talked to General Morgan, and he said he had some spare motors (including, I think, an E-tek), so I've got a weapon motor down.

Question for the real builders: What's the best way to keep a spinner from obliterating itself on a hit?

I would suggest for armour, use Hardox.
You can cut it with a grinder, and weld it.
Used alot over here in England, the best spinners use Hardox.
Damn I should probably put something fancy in this bit huh?

Call these guys.
It might be expenseive as heck, but there one of the best, plus, they make high in-pact gearboxes. Also, they make full shell, so you can ask them for a shell to go with that smoking new gearbox.

Wrong. Those are perm motors your thinking of. A E-tek costs about 470$.

Alright, here's the plan:
Get this (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/MAG-BKT60.html) for the speed controller, drive motors, and RC unit. Cannibalize it for parts.
Use two o' these (http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/MAG-S28-400.html) buggers to spin one shell. If it works, I've got 9 hp. SOMETHING is going to break when it hits an opponent.
Sheck's going to be angled, like Megabyte. I was considering a flat, Shrederator-esque shell, but it's too vulnerable to bar spinners like Mortician and Vicious Verdict.

There are much better ways to get the ESC and drive motors. I like to point out that the Battlekits don't come with radios, you still need to buy one some were else. Twin magmotor gear box will do some damage. I'm just not sure what be damaged, your bot(weapon sheering off.) or the other(shell doing damage). Also, why take apart the Battlekit, when you can buy just gearboxs. Here are the gearbox's on there own.
http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/battlekit_drive_modules.html
You will need to buy two, but its cheaper than ruining a perfectly good battle kit. If you want some good advice, ask these guys:

They won Robotica, so they know what there doing.

Plus, if its going to be a full-body spinner, you'll need some kind of self righting mechinisim.
Otherwise, an impact might not only damage your bot, it could also send it over on its back.
And your opponent could still be running.
You Americans are lucky, you all have Class 1 type arena, most of ours are class 3, and there are only a few class 2 type arenas.
No fair.
EDIT: Yes, im a MW!

R1885: I'll have to check that site out.
As for damaging myself: it's an FBS. They all break themselves. It's just a matter of whether the opponent breaks first.

Whamett: FBS's don't have SRiMechs. Some can tip back over, but if the shell is up to speed, it should have enough gyroscopic force to where it'll get launched up and land back on its wheels.
But hey, that's the weakness.

I think Wham's just talking of a Megabyte-style crooked (or simply vertical) rod as a srimech.

If I were you Sorrow, I'll make a Ziggo-style half-sphere spinning shell with an undercutting weapon. And a good drive train, also...

Good point.
But is good to have something extra, like a rod on Ziggo and Megabyte, or a static flag like Typhoon.
You have to be prepared, because belive me, if your bots not ready, then it will never win.
Were taking extra precautions with Hunter, safety aspects, like cut-out fuses, as where running some VERY high voltage motors in him, plus, if it should come to it, the wedge is aluminium, so if it doesnt fare that well in its first fight, then an idea for us is get some 3mm hardox the size or the wedge plate, and put that on the front, so that its stronger.
Plus, make sure that you have a secure space for the Link to go.
If its not a good spot, then it'll:
Flap: Probably end up breaking off
Slot: Cause the weight off-balence of the shell to cause the robot to tremour a bit.
There are all these aspects to think of.
Not just a weapon, motors and armour, but all of the above.
If you know that, then im sure that your going to be a great roboteer!
Damn I should probably put something fancy in this bit huh?

Naryar: That's the idea, but with teeth at varying heights along the shell.

Whamett: Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm planning to use a big rod.
I understand how many precautions I'll need. I'll be running it into a brick wall at full speed, seeing what breaks, fixing it, then ramming it into the wall again ad nauseum.
Besides, I've got Asians on my team. How can I go wrong?

I read about ramming a bot into a wall in a Battlebots book I got years ago (by Mark Clarkson), I was little and I read that thing through about 7 times until the pages were falling out.

You might also want to try standing on it and/or dropping a cinder block on it. Then you'll know how it fares against hammers.
Avoid the beam and you won't get hit!
