Title: uk antweight kits
Post by: haz on May 23, 2011, 10:55:38 AM
at most roaming robots, robots live events i am often asked about building antweights, then asked if there is a kit, there are two, the roaming robots kit and the robot wars 101 kit. the roaming robots battle ants are utter rubish, and the robot wars 101 kit is a bit expensive and over powerfull.
i have been designing a fairly cheap antweight kit, prices would be about £70 for a working robot with a basic weapon, lowwer without weapon or chargers.
these would be mainly for new roboteers in the south of england, i have just made a bulk order of 3d printed gears so i can post more exact details when they arive. the robots can be made out of a specific material if the buyer would like.  i would prefer to hand these over at events so i can explain how everything works exactly and things like that so that people can be complealy happy handing money over. im not expecting a large amount of sales, and will do things basily to order.
i thourght i would post this here as in a lot of posts in the members robot section asking about cheap kits, is anybody interested?

You never know.

Will you do a Murphy's law kit?

Me and my friends might be a little interested, but we'd need control stuff too, if you know that i mean. the rx/tx etc

right, i have found that the total cost of the parts comes to £65 for a fully working robot with polycarbonate, aluminum and HDPE armour.
it includes a charger and battery. anybody interested? i will probably get a load ready and working as drive all days for roaming robots events

I seem to be making the cheapest antweight ever. total is estimated to be £39, £45 with a very good flipper servo. Includes everything. Imma make 2 identicals ones, so I can battle with friends.

this kit includes spares and a charger though, hence the more expensive costs

You can get the Roaming Robots Super Ant kits. Not really an antweight as such, but still compete in Roaming Robots events. Fairly cheap as well, iirc.

not cheap. not overly well built. and that was what i ment in the first post about the roaming robots kit

TBH, the BA's are a waste of money, not an antweight, but are somehow much worse, uncontrollable, little traction and a very weak flipper

i mean, if one of my ants can beat them (admittedly driven by a child) then they must be bad

leave anything unnatended for  even the shortest amount of time and some kid will find a way to break it, pushing buttons turning wheels ajusting trims, showing them how to drive the things is a hard task in itself

I agree.

Another thing I've noticed is that they ask "Can I see?". When you say they can they then pick it up. That's not seeing, that's feeling...

Who cares?

Just don't let a little kid pick it up

I went to Gadget Show Live and drove an antweight around. 30 Minutes later, it had dissappeared, because some kid snapped the flipper.
I managed to drive a robot around decently. It was the blue Robo Challenge Demo Bot, and I pitted 2 of the 3 bots in the battle, but the pit rose for them, just to give the kids a chance. Then, I pitted someone again.  :trollface
