With all this new technology on the rise, is it possible that robotic combat will advance to the next level? If so, what will happen, boxes on wheels or actual walking robots?

Probably the next step won't have anything to do with much technology. In next gen robot combats, they will most likely allow equipping robots with firearms and stuff like that. The typical short range weapons would still be used but bots would be bigger and better armored.
I've already seen similar stuff in TV shows. People turning real sized cars into remote controlled vehicles and adding machine guns, cannons and RPGs to their hoods

To allow that, they would have to build outdoor arenas protected with walls of sand

I don't think firearms will be involved at all. To be honest, I think the whole thing is going to die in a few years, which is a huge shame.

Yeah I can't see firearms ever being allowed, especially when we still have trouble allowing just spinners in the UK. Firearms would just turn it into a tank competition anyway.

I'm totally disconnected from the scene, so I don't really have a clue, but I haven't really heard of anything involving it recently. Also, won't the interest in the scene sharply drop off once the kids who have grown up on robot wars turn into adults with full-time jobs? Since the TV show got cut I don't think there would be many new people getting into the scene.

I mean, I don't have a clue, so I'm probably totally wrong.

Most of those who stop by events see the sport for the first time. Many of them get excited and want to learn more on how to get involved.

UK is too civilized to even consider firearm robots. My prediction has America written all over it.

I really do not like the idea of putting guns on robots. Personally, I think guns would just make fights incredibly boring.

Yeah, you'd have to make rules against robots being to strong - as it stands now, most are bulletproof.

I think "Robotica" came the closest to a sustainable competition - no one design was supreme.  Setup and cleanup would be a problem for an independent organization.

I assume you're assuming right because I watched 1 or 2 episodes a long time ago and I never heard of it again.

Nope, not Full Metal Challenge. I never heard of it actually.

I've seen that Top Gear episode too but the show I talked about had only 2 vehicles per battle and they were equipped with heavy weaponry. I have no clue about the name of the show. It resembled more to Top Gear than Full Metal Challenge.
