Saving up cash ATM, planning to get a new laptop and parts for an AW.

Current plans:

The two triangle thingies are weapon supports. The bar off to the side is the weapon (might be a bit small). Is this a good design for an AW?

Also I need name suggestions.

Also I renamed the team, because none of the pots are gonna have a reptile theme anymore and thought it would just be stupid.

also: Is it possible to modify lego wheels for use on a fingertech spark motor? I want to save money by not buying new wheels (also I think they are supposed to be grippy).

Interesting, how about the theme of the bots?

Currently the antweights are ruled by either toughest wedge (antelope) or the biggest spinner (Gyroscopic). It's basically a all or nothing weightclass because everything has to be so light. Building an ant takes a different design mindset than building a 30, which is about as low that I would go if I was to build something similar to it.

Go on the builders db, you'll notice 3 things in common with almost all ants: large exposed wheels, they dot look like their larger counterparts, they have a proportionally larger weapon than most other weightclasses (be it wedge or spinner)

Hm. So a wedged VS wouldn't work? Bleh. I have other designs in my head anyway.

The general concept's fine, I think more the point was that you should look at the proportions/quirks of that style of bot to see what design issues pop up.

Alright, update time. After spending several years thinking of several designs, i've finally settled on one.

It will be an antweight with a Psychotron-like wedge. No weapon to save time/cash. Got another 150-ish dollars today because we had a birthday party. I'm gonna talk to my dad about it tomorrow, he's said in the past we can do it so I wil very likely have a working ant by the end of the year.

Are lego tires/wheels a good substitute for lite flites? I have so many at home that replacing them would be easier than having to buy so many sets of wheels. Also, what armor do you guys usually use on your ants?

I usually use cardboard....Also, if you're going to make a simple wedge, at least make sure to paint it or cover it in MLP stickers or do something to give it character.

Lego wheels will work, but why not use Lite Flites? They cost lest than five dollars a pair.
UHWM is common in the US, and HDPE in the UK. For dust covers, use 7075 or Chromemoly.

Don't worry Sparkey, I'm gonna paint it.

Ribbs, I want to save as much cash as possible toward motors, armor and radio equipment. If I turn up with an extra 10/20 bucks, I'll get lite flites.

What motors would you guys recommend? Fingertech Sparks?

Silver sparks. Gold sparks tend to strip pretty easily.

The big advantage to lite flites is that they are light.

If you want a decent radio at a good price, I would recommend this radio. It does mix, and with the tiny esc's, it also will fail safe. You'll need a link cable to get it to work.

If you haven't picked out your ESCs yet, go with the Finger Tech tiny esc. You'll need two, but they are well worth the money. They also have a BEC built right in, so that will save you some money.

This Lipo will give plenty of power, and this charger will work well with it too.

Yes, Finger Tec spark motors are the most preferred in ants. I use the 50:1 Gold Sparks, but it would be better to go with the 33:1 Sliver Sparks(For some reason, Robot Market Place does not carry the 33:1). Silver sparks have larger gear teeth, and can handle more punishment.

Lite Flites don't cost very much, please use them. A pair of 2" Lite Flites cost lest than five dollars, and squish in a way that act as shocks. They can save your motors!

Lite Hubs work great. If you want to get fancy, Dave's Hubs are the absolute best way to mount lite flites.

1/4" thick UHMW plastic sides will handle pretty much anything thrown at them, and is an easy material to work with.

1/16" thick 7075 aluminum is super light weight and very strong. Don't try to bend it.

That adds up to 176 US dollars. Add screws, and other mounting hardware, the total cost should be no more than 180-190 dollars.

Alright, the bot is a go. I'm going to be getting the design and parts list to my dad in the next hour, and the robot will be called Fire Arrow (or FireArrow, haven't decided yet). to go with that, the team will be renamed one more time to Team Ignition. I'll post the build report in a new thread in the proper section once we begin building.

Why do people even bother making pages when the bots don't even exist...
