Title: Robot Wars: Where are they now?
Post by: JoeBlo on October 10, 2010, 05:23:20 AM
discussing about anything related to what happened to robot wars or where arena's, robots, people, etc are now.. yeah

The arena has been sold for scrap, I think

Wasnt it sold to the guy who owned Lightning?
(And @Vertigo)

Quote from: Wikipedia
In early 2004 the Robot Wars arena was purchased from the television production firm who produce the show (Mentorn) by a company called Robot Arenas Ltd based in the UK. They are an organisation set up by a past competitor of Robot Wars to continue the sport of robot combat in the UK.

The Robot Wars arena was sold for scrap in 2005 for £250 by new owners of RAF Newton where the arena was housed. A suit filed against RAF Newton by Robot Arenas Ltd found that RAF Newton had acted reasonably in the matter and owed no compensation to Robot Arenas Ltd.

Both I guess.

some of you guys probably should have read the other thread before posting :P

anyways I will move all the posts here since they were off topic

The BBC must still have the rights to more series than just extreme 1 surely?
Or did they have to buy the rights back from channel 5?
In which case why didn't they buy them all?

interestingly enough I believe BBC never sold the merchandising rights to RW which was a contributing factor of its cancellation (new network couldn't make anymore money off it)
Well that's interesting (assuming it's true ofcourse).

Also, does anyone know who owns the arena nowadays, I heard that one of the teams bought it (storm 2 IIRC), but I do know there was some controversy around it, mentorn tried to block the deal I think.

I know a heap of the wood floor panels were sold as collectors items (seen some on ebay from time to time)

I dont know if they were old ones or the last ones from the end of S7 though

I know a heap of the wood floor panels were sold as collectors items (seen some on ebay from time to time)

I dont know if they were old ones or the last ones from the end of S7 though
Strange, i'm even more confused now than when I started this thread

The original arena is gone forever, thanks to various things:

http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Robot_Wars_Arena (http://robotwars.wikia.com/wiki/Robot_Wars_Arena)

The only bit of it I know still exists is the bit NFX (?) has.

The wierd thing is, I was at a RL event in October '09, way after the arena had been destroyed, and I asked Ed Hoppit specifically if they had the arena, and he said that they had.

another thing to throw in the mix is there is more then 1 arena....

there was the smaller original one then a larger one...

I know for a fact one's floor was divided up into many wooden sheets and sold as collectors items (as mentioned before) but dont know which one, then no doubt the other ended up scrapped

but that could have just been the set ? the arena itself would just be the inner low walls and base holding the floor... not all the polycarb, catchnets or crowsnest's...

anyway probably shoudl open a new arena discussion topic.

We also don't know what is meant by "set"

Gauntlet perhaps?

And it was ed hoppit who had apparently bought the arena to continue using it for robot combat, so if he owns it he wouldn't have found the "set" in the basement and thrown it out!

Maybe he owns a different arena?

But again if thats the case why haven't we heard more of it?

And I know i'm going off topic in my own thread joe, but it is rather puzzling
We should really have a what the heck hapened to Robot Wars thread

Story I heard was that the guy from Storm II bought the arena because he liked it so much.

Speaking of collector's items, I actually have a barrel that was used in the second series for the Pinball Trials during the Semi-Finals. =D

Interesting stuff about the arena... I always wondered whether they had two because it would take ages to setup the stuff for the other challenges (like pinball, the gauntlet etc.) and then they would have to change it back again.

*wonders what happened to WBC*

The Series 4 version was active for a few years under Team Xbotz, but after they retired, I don't know what became of it.  The Series 5 version was sold to Twam Cylon, who haven't finished rebuilding it yet.

I'm not sure if the event organizers will let WBC use its flipper, what with safety constraints and all; it was an issue when Xbotz was using WBC a few years back.

Yeah, it looks a bit more like the original chaos design, I don't know why he just didn't call it chaos 3

It is a grat shame he didn't finish it though, he's got a briliant record, even outside chaos 2 chaos 1 was a cool bot that doesn't get enough recognition if you ask me.

Usually when a roboteer makes a sequel 'bot, they strip the original of all the electronics and start from a brand new chassis.  My guess would be that George has Chaos 1's empty body shell around in the garage.

Here's Bigger Brother's guest appearance on the reality show "Big Brother."  In this episode the robots had taken over the Big Brother house and tried to turn the contestants into robots (The ones that did get turned into robots were forced to wear goofy robot costumes until the end of the task).

Those that survived the preliminary rounds faced the ultimate test - building a robot and having it fight Bigger Brother.  The only materials they had were an R/C car and some arts & crafts supplies, so their robots were woefully underpowered, but they only had to survive for 3 minutes to win.  The battle itself is right near the beginning so don't skip to the middle of this clip:

Well, it was in my room, until I moved out to go to university. At which point ALL my stuff went into the garage so me and my sister could swap rooms. But now I have much less room than I used to. Between my desk, chair, shelves, guitars, amplifiers, bed, wardrobe and scorpion car parts table, there's not much space left over.

Oh no, I was walking about the one I made in RA2.

But I only use scrap cardboard for the IRL reps, there's a restaraunt near my house that leaves their flattened-out cardboard boxes by the dumpster, and I just go by on the weekends and nick whatever I need.

Ah, OK. The former doesn't sound so farfetched when you consider that in the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Stinger is actually mentioned as part of the industrial exhibit.

Yes...but I think it's a fairly safe bet. After all, it'd be sad to see such an influential robot and RW champion in the state it was after that horrible punishment it took from Razer, 13 Black and Mr Psycho.

Somewhat like that- a bit like the Great Hall in the NRM, really. And perhaps other things, like say, the House Robots, props and things from the original TV series, and a purpose-built arena or something might be cool. For full-combat events in the UK, perhaps.

The fastest way to do that is get a TV channel to broadcast the fights on an episodic basis (not just once a year like Killer Robots.)  If you really want people to make fun designs, you have to offer them athe chance to show them off in front of an audience of millions.

But yeah, the money problem comes into it again.

In all seriousness however, how? Unlike those kits that Roaming Robots offered, those things are actual heavyweights, with effective (to them at least) weaponry. Might not cause actual damage, but to anyone who has driven robots casually (not professionally), they do look like good fun- almost like coin op RC vehicles (like you get in Amusement Parks and the like) on steroids   :approve:

I wouldn't say that.  They've set up a pay-to-play robotic combat system that allows people to drive real heavyweight robots without much risk of damaging the robots or themselves.  They'll even let you take one home for 1200 pounds, which is a crackin' good deal compared to the time/monetary cost of building an actual combat robot yourself.

Sure it's docile, but it's a way to let interested spectators dip their toe into the lake of combat robots.

Quoted for truth. And if they install a system like that with a more permanent arena (MDF with a raisable pit and release mechanism that resets automatically after each fight) in this museum we're planning, we could be onto a winner.

The last I'd heard of it, it was kept after Anarchy was built, but its spike had been removed after its retirement.
