Title: Obscure robots built by famous/well known builders?
Post by: Jamin on August 20, 2012, 04:25:14 AM
I've noticed that a lot of the builders responsible for well known machines also built robots that either had little success or where entered into less well known competitions. An example being Jonathan Ridder, who not only being known for Ziggo
(https://gametechmods.com/uploads/images/86757ziggo.jpg)
Also competed in the US Robot Wars in 95, 96, and 97 with a series of featherweight, wedge shaped robots named Ziggy (one of which later sported a saw blade)

He also had a RW 1996 competitor named "Wonderbug"
and later on he also built a rammer named Ziggzagg

EDIT: The Panic Attack team also competed in Battlebots with a flipper named Scallywag

Yeah, I managed to get its fight summary from the Omega-13 site and I uploaded it to the BattleBots Wiki if anyone is curious.

Also Team Diablo made a lightweight bot called Little Wicked for Season 4.0, but it had to forfeit due to it being overweight.

Beta from the Killerhurtz/Terrurhurtz guys.  Built for Battlebots but couldn't compete due to ripping up the floor.

Robot the Bruce and Chaos 1 - you can probably figure out who made those

Z, TerMinal frenZy, and The Bat from the frenZy guys.

The Dr Inferno Jr guy built a rather unsuccessful heavyweight called Towering Inferno.

Doom of Babylon built by Todd Mendenhall who also built Panzer/Wrath.

If you're referring to this

then you'd be wrong. Z was built off of the Chassis of the 1996 competitor "Killborg" which was entered by a different team. Team Minus Zero, did however, enter an unnamed bot in 1994 and "Cyberknight" in 1995.

Jackrabbit, a MW rammer and Mini-G, a mini Greenspan (as the name implies)

Bardis also had a few other robots that I can't remember right now. IIRC, didn't team minus zero also own tmz.com for their website? Because now its the really big company TMZ, that does lots of celebrity stalking type stuff.

A while ago Patrick Campbell opened up their website on a new domain since it was stolen by the pooparazzi long ago.

Two failed robots from the team that brought you Son of Whyachi and Warrior SKF:

Warrior/Whyatica, built for Robotica Season 3 2, they made it way too fast and uncontrollabe for the competition.

Why-Not, an early Melty Brain Spinner, don't know much about it othe rthna it didn't do ver ywell in Battlebots:

Towering Inferno was actually a pretty well-known robot. Although, you are right about the unsuccessful part. InfernoLabs also entered Robotica with a flame thrower bot.

Team Whyachi also entered Whyatica into season 2(?) of Robotica.

Edit: Apparently Warrior is just another name of Whyatica, or vice versa.

According to the page, it is powered by two 12 HP gas engines. So it wouldn't surprise me.

Briggs & Stratton makes electric motors too? Didn't realize that... I just thought the "Etek" name was a coincidence.

Mechacidal Maniac, made by Brian Nave, the maker of The Revolutionist/Phrizbee. It made it to the fight to the finish in it' season 2 episode, but was beaten by Ill-Tempered Mutt.

Limpet, built by the 13 Black team.  Only in Series 2, and fell in the Skittles trial

and it looks a heck of a lot cooler if you ask me. You should make a cardboard model of it...

...than 13 Black you mean?  Interesting.  I'll think about it, although I've had my eye on some special scissors that make a zigzag pattern as you cut, and I was thinking about doing some robot with a sawbalde, which would have been impossible to do before.

Yeah, I'm weird.....13 Black was a cool looking robot, don't get me wrong, but I've always liked the impractical idea of tracked wedges, and the zebra pattern is really nice.

Both of them where horrible robots. I do like Limpet a little more.

Carlo Bertocchini of BioHazard fame was also making a SHW for one of the later BattleBots competitions, but it was never finished.

Did 13 Black make Limpet as well? Awesome, I liked Limpet. I would have liked to have seen it eliminate Roadblock, that would have been an interesting moment. I wonder how that would have changed the course of Robot Wars.
