Title: Mortis unmasked
Post by: Resetti's Replicas on March 22, 2012, 06:26:14 PM
We finally got a picture of Mortis' insides, which is a big deal because they never explained how they got the tanto blade to fire so fast. ("I'd tell you but I'd have to kill you" was on the team's website.)  So here's the picture, it looks like just a basic clutch mechanism, but I'm not really the authority on these thing, maybe someone else can explain it better:

Does it still work?

It has the potential to work again, but the builders took out all the electronics and motors before they sold it.  Team S-Tec is working on restoring it for demonstration; it's way too outdated to fight competitively.

Looks to me like a rack and pinion with a cam drive or crankshaft pulling a linkage that has a rack on it which would swing the axe. Seeing the insides and lack of intricate machining really makes me wonder where they spent all their money...

That one I can answer - the bulk of it was invested in their aircraft-grade titanium armour.  And there was probably more stuff in htere, what you see is just the electronics that Team S-Tec were able to replace as of that photo.

That's not Mortis. It's RigorMortis- a similar robot Random Violence Technologies originally planned to enter Battlebots with, under the name of Maelstrom.

Mortis itself does appear in the picture, though- you can see its front (notice the lifting arm) behind RigorMortis.

Looks like it may work something like the system Team Hurtz used in beta-

Ah, OK- quite ironic, considering that Behemoth pitted Mortis in the First World Championship way back in Series 3, but it's good to see it's going to a great team   :approve:

Me and the current SMIDSY owner are on the same team, the Robot Avengers. Though sometimes, I question why he sells his bots about 2 months after getting them.

I wish Mortis had been good in RW, was always my favourite bot in the first runs of the show. Best bot in robot wars probably, if it had wheels instead of treads it would have been unstoppable.

It was undoubtedly the best at the start. If they hadn't broken their axe, I think they could have won the series. It was quite unlucky against Panic Attack in the second wars, but following that, their biggest weakness was that absolutely gaping ground clearance. If they'd stuck around for the fifth wars, they could have solved that issue, and probably been a serious contender. I would have loved to see it against something like Tornado or Hypno-Disc.
