MIT Mini Maker Faire
« on: August 09, 2014, 07:22:13 AM »
Since a date for Franklin hasn't been announced yet, this is pretty much the next east coast event. I'm pretty hyped because it's closer to me than any of the Pennsylvania events and that all the MIT robots (EG: Colsonbot and DDT) will probably be competing. One more thing, the guy that made Double Agent is interested in competing.

In case anyone's wondering this competition will be on October 4th.

Hmm, an event in Boston you say?  I might finally be able to see robots fighting live.

You ever tried driving a robot before? I did when I was 5 at roaming robots. It's fun.

No, but he assured me it was easy - the robot is a modified Biohazard R/C.

It's basic tank drive. I drove it once back in March, it's a pretty simple bot to drive. I'll go easy on you if we match up :P

yeah its just one stick per side. move both forward, the bot moves forward. move the left one down and the right one up, it turns left.

Ok did you pause that episode of SpongeBob there on purpose. Because I swear the line is "Maybe it doesn't work." Are you trying to free mason our asses right now or what?

back from the event

I'll let Alex explain the whole pizza box/spongebob thing, but he rused all of us big time. Said bot also somehow came third. Don't ask me. He also left the sporkplexor at home somehow.

FireArrow came third out of a field of six antweights. We did it round robin, and I won three fights in a row before losing to Cannon on a crowd vote (lmao) However the last hit he dealt me ruined my drive train, demolished the bearings pressed into the chassis and made the bot unfixable in the pits. So I had to forfeit my last match, which tied me with Brandon's ant SpinZilla. We flipped a "coin" to determine the tiebreaker (since neither bot was operable for a grudge match) and SpinZilla won.

Nocturne did alright I guess. In round 1 I demolished a last-second duct tape bot, but cracked a weapon tooth on the steel kickplate. In my second match I lost to Robo Rooter when he hit me so hard it tore both wires from my kill switch. The weapon axle bent and the other tooth came off, so I forfeited my last match to the pizza box mainly because my weapon could no longer spin. However I managed to kill Robo rooter's weapon and it became a wedge for the rest of the competition :V

Resetti did pretty well for his first try despite a tough draw, and he took home the rumble championship by being the only beetle in the arena :P

Final results:

Ants:
Cannon (5-0)
SpinZilla (3-2)
FireArrow (3-2)
Sisu (2-3)
Glass Cannon (1-4)
Puppy (1-4)

Beetles:
1st: Chestnut
2nd: Roborooter (AKA the wedge of disappointment)
3rd: SpongeBot FailPants

Here's D12, the bot I got to control, in all its glory.  It's a Biohazard R/C with a wedge and copious duct tape.  I made a little cardboard standee to give it my own personal touch.

Match 1: Paired against Brandon, what are the odds?  1 in 7.  I'm a mathematician, not a robotics expert.  He hit me once, and the batteries popped out.  I let him lay into me for a good 30 seconds before tapping out.  Front wedge is crumpled so badly we have to lose it, but to its credit, D-12 survived the entire time length of the other 2 matches.

Match 2: Spongebob.  Somehow that bot has the same amount of pushing power as me.  Also it's sturdier than it looks - I'm slamming into the legs again and again but they won't give.  I was still getting a feel for the controls so I confused left for right a couple times.  Judges give it to Spongebob.

The Rumble: Me, an AW spinner, an AW wedge, and the empty Spongebob shell.  I bash the hell out of Spongebob to get revenge, manage to get in the way of the spinner.  At some point, both AW's have gotten stuck in the wall.  I help out the wedge, but no amount of bumping can free the spinner (It's a VS with a ballpoint pen for a support).  I split the rest of the time between smacking Spongebob, and sticking & freeing the wedge from the wall.  Great fun.  I practically begged the organizer to do it again next year.  We drew a great crowd, and MIT is already known for robotics, so I do hope this is the beginning of bringing the scene over here.

Nocturne's fight against that duct tape bot was my favorite - lots of great destruction and parts everywhere.  It was an early fight, and nothing topped it.

As Badnik said, I did in fact get a trophy, for D12 being the only Beetle in the rumble.  It's a real great souvenir, and I've put it on the mantle in the front hall.  Quite the conversation starter.  Thanks again to everyone who made this all possible.
