I think I'm going to build something real......
« on: January 16, 2011, 07:51:00 PM »
I've decided on building a simple AW HS, but I don't what to give into buying some complete kit. Does anyone have any advice as to what I should build it out of? I know Robot market place is a good place to go but they have nothing there for building chassis.

I would go for an aluminum or carbonfiber (expensive) chassis. Just buy sheets of the stuff and cut it with a saw (I use a wet saw).
Any comments would be appreciated. :D

I don't have a saw handy, nor would my mom let me use one (I'm not very responsible)

You really do need a saw... and ideally a drill press.
Any comments would be appreciated. :D

Well that rules out building a robot. :P

Can't build if you don't have the tools.

As for building materials... I've seen UHMW plastic used with great results. Just ask Zipdragon about that. He took 1st, and 2nd in the ants at FI with UHMW Robots. I've also used it on my bot without a problem. As for aluminum, the stuff at Home Depot or Lowes won't cut it you need 6160 or 7075 grade. Steel you need to use a 4110 - 4140 grade any other steel except s7 (tool steel aka the really hard stuff) isn't strong enough to justify it's weight.

P.S. Why are you still registered with a middleweight for the battlebots pro class championship if you aren't going to build a bot and aren't even allowed to use a saw?

What you need is a dad that knows what he's doing with his tools XD

thank god I have one

Yeah, Zipdragon has some good advice on parts and stuff. Look through one of the stickied threads somewhere in this section, gives some good stuff

Hey, who knows, maybe we'll fight someday XD

if you cant do any work yourself its not a problem if you have money... there is bound to be plenty of metal workers/ machiners around... Wont necessarily be the cheapest way but it is a way none the less.

ACAMS is a machinist, I believe. I know he owns a machine shop, at least.

The only problem I see with that is that most machinists want to have exact measurements from the customer to go by. Or maybe a blueprint or a technical drawing. Something tells me that Sypher is not the best with measurements and what-not.

I'm a very pictorial person, I could draw blue prints but have issues typing them out or explaining them without my hands. Yes I know measurements but not I'm not very good with metric.....I thought about having Whyachi make my chassis but if ACAMS would be willing too sure  :gawe:

I suggest you use FeatureCAM (I think thats what its called) to draw your disgns, the files can be sent to the machine easily.

My Dad is an engineer, he mainly makes metal parts but once he had to make lots of Terminator arms for this guy.

I know you said you didn't want a kit but seeing you arent allowed to use powertools a Kitbots.com kit  might be your best option. Here is the drumbot kit. http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=DAB99F68836091F142AFCB49C46C601B.qscstrfrnt03?productId=19&categoryId=1 It is based on the Weta series of drumbots from Team Rolling Thunder. Also they have a horizontal bar spinner kit  http://kitbots.com/product.sc;jsessionid=DAB99F68836091F142AFCB49C46C601B.qscstrfrnt03?productId=3&categoryId=1

I asked my mom, I can use a saw with "adult supervision." I had to milk how many safety precautions I'd use lol.
