Title: Bots on Ebay
Post by: Resetti's Replicas on September 26, 2012, 03:40:53 PM
This seems like a good thread to have, give each other a heads up when we find robots or related stuff for sale on Ebay.  Here's a current one.

Seems legit. (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Battlebots-/120990734110?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D2325139442985923828%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D120990734110%26)

that was actually up on ebay a while back being sold by the original owner, it seems someone (very illiterate) bought it and is trying to resell it for more money. It's a middleweight and did not actually compete in Battlebots.

Oh, and an early RW competitor named "Badger" was sold on ebay a few years ago.

Atomic Wedgie was notorious for this, although it didn't sell.

And you all know the story of Slap 'Em Silly.

Honestly I always thought they where putting Atomic Wedgie up for sale as a publicity stunt.

and what was the story behind Slap 'Em Silly? I know it was bought on ebay, but was it another robot before that?

Yes, it was the original Patriot, then it was put on EBay and bought by Team Fatcats, who rebuilt it from mostly the ground up. Some other parts from Patriot were used in the Slap Em Silly multibot Slap Em Sillier.

Please not this is very rare item. When it was build it was used in a battlebot competition. This robot contains the frame and all the motors. This is the real thing it weights more than 100 pounds. Don't let this opportunity to get a great product at a very very low price. This machine was not made in china is a America machine . This machine is make like a tank very strong and does kick ass. It robot has all the mechanical parts to complete a combat robot .The setup in this auction provide a great start to build your own robot. This one is the best value for your money. The original designer invested more thean $2000 on the creation of this mechanical parts for his battlebot. If you have any questions, please contact us by email . Notice the low starting price. Good Luck!!!!

I lol'd.

What is also funny is the fact that someone posted the auction when the original owner sold it and I distinctly remember all of the pictures in the current auction being used in it. Laziness prevails.

True I guess, but it aggrivates me that somebody who would do that would be the one who buys it. I reaaallly wanted to as well, but I couldn't get the money to do so and I hoped somebody who would actually use it would get it. A combat robot just isn't the kind of thing you go and flip.

Try negotiating, I assume you have some money to offer.  He doesn't seem very bright in the head, you could probably convince him to sell it at a loss.

That is an annoying thing to do though. The best thing for people to do would be to not put an offer in and force him to have spent $150 on something he doesn't know what to do with.

Heh, this sort of reminds me of the "One does not simply walk into Mordor" meme.

I'm serious though Jamin, when (not if) the bot fails to sell, send the guy a message saying you'd buy it for a substantial price reduction.  Offer him half your total budget, and negotiate from there.  At some point, bring up that it must be a real pain for him to have to store it, always a good argument when you're haggling on something really big and heavy.
Title: Re: Bots on Ebay
Post by: MikeNCR on September 28, 2012, 12:04:08 AM
On the off chance anyone here is seriously considering trying to buy that thing:

Seriously. Don't buy it. It's a terrible idea.

There's so much wrong with it you'll end up scrapping most of it just to get something that sorta works.

1. It appears to have a differential at the rear, meaning you've likely got 1 motor driving the whole bot and some complex braking system to turn, if it's even capable of turning.

2. The chains connecting the wheels are done wrong, there's nothing forcing the chain to contact the middle wheel, so as soon as there's any chain slack it'll start skipping.

3. The whole chassis seems to be welded together with no real access points, good luck working on it.

4. They spray painted the whole thing black, including the wiring.

5. I'm not even sure the thing's set up to be run by remote. Without getting a better look, I can't be certain, but it looks like the "controls" are at the end of the arm and this thing's almost set up more like a powered tow vehicle or something along those lines.
Title: Re: Bots on Ebay
Post by: Jamin on September 28, 2012, 12:10:20 AM
Actually I thought the arm looked like a sort of boom mount for tethered controls, like the kind of thing you'd see at the competitions they do in India.

With the solid  arm, it doesn't even match the stuff from India as you've got almost no range and limited flexibility. There's so much oddness and wrongness with it, if anyone's really in a spot where they want to buy a bot/kit, do it right and get something from kitbots/Robot Marketplace or wait for a both that's actually decently built to go up for sale.
Title: Re: Bots on Ebay
Post by: Jamin on September 28, 2012, 12:13:23 AM
I thought you meant like it had a switch control system attached to the end of the arm...I guess we meant the same thing I just sort of misread it.

Oh please, if it was ACAMS you'd end up limited or something, all I do is stop that from happening.

And looking over Mike's post I completely agree. The best thing to do would be to not buy it and end up with him wasting $150.

The three "main" robots from Team LOGICOM were up for sale 5 or so years ago. I know it's not from eBay and it's old, but I wanted to let you know.

I dunno if any of them were sold, all I know is they were up for sale.

Two more bots have shown up online, this time bigger bots around 40-120 lbs.

The first is this micro switched rc-lawnmower prototype. Very cheap, under 100 USD right now plus shipping, no radio or battery. TBH, not much here that could be salvaged other that it being a good troll bot.

The other is more interesting, because its Mortis!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Battlebot-Fighting-Robot/201058937286?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.RVI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20263%26meid%3D5705199072786501372%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D9059%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D281289453845 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Battlebot-Fighting-Robot/201058937286?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.RVI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20263%26meid%3D5705199072786501372%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D9059%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D281289453845)
OK, not that Mortis, this Mortis was a BBIQ bot(I think, thats what its bumper sticker says). This one is interesting because it has one of those IFI 900MHz rc systems. This thing is basically Mortician lite, basically the same bot inside with T-74s instead of T-64s and nimhs instead of Li-ion batteries.

It also last competed in like 2003 so you'd probably have to spend monies to bring it up to date.

There was a giant lot of mixed RC BattleBots toys and stuff on eBay last night. It was like $43 or something total when I calculated shipping to my zip code. I waited on it last night to see if I really needed it, and I thought it over and since I still use the motors and gearboxes from the BB toys I checked back to splurge on them and they're gone. If someone from GTM bought those, you got a great haul. There was also a Diesector and Biohazard RC in the lot, but they looked like they were missing pieces (all of them did). Bleh. :P

Robot Wars Superheayweight Siren is on Ebay. Apparently its owners left it in the shed when they moved away, and it's just been discovered now.  It's local pickup only, so for me, might as well be on the moon, but there's some interest in it, as the bidding's gone up a bit from the asking price of 20 pounds.

that sh** is ill! of course it would get smacked regardless of any refurb done on it but most robot wars bots were rather primitive anyways and a pneumatic spike on a robot that looks like it would rock back and forth on impact backed with a wood saw would need some major work done but hey! half of it is already done for you. how could you complain?

edit dang theres four pages of bots for sale? i have not been looking very hard

I said this when I found it, and I've said this on FB. Here is the same post copied and pasted.

"The best thing to do if you really want, Because there's no way in hell anyone would lug that around the country to display at events.

So best course of action for the buyer is to empty out the insides of valuables then either keep them or sell on... If they work. Take the chassis, weapon and wheels and add new casing, then donate it to John to take around the shows for display... Otherwise it's just a cheap donor that is frankly... Already overpriced. And I'm sure all the other roboteers here will agree with me.

It's literally a buy, visually restore and donate job for anyone who doesn't work for the Robot Wars company. As Gareth has said. Getting it into competitive form will be a waste of cash, time and money."

And what Leo Van Miert, the owner of Splinter said:

"When I bought Splinter and Hannibal of of Ebay I did so because they were in a condition that you could compete with it with little effort. This is a bunch of metal with a weapon that was not effective in series 2, let alone in modern HW combat. And for display purposes it would take so much time and resources to even make it look presentable that I'd sooner build a new one."

Not really. Finns compete mostly with featherweights, antweights and fleaweights only. Besides, the bot is in UK and I'm tight on money so no point of bidding on it.

. I may not be a builder myself but even I can tell that that restoring that bot would be more expensive time and money wise than building one from scratch.  A proper restoration would mmean replacing practically everything plus deciding on how to lose 17 kilos if you actually want to compete with it.  And the end result it a bot who was neither well known nor good looking nor well built nor anything special at all.  While I don't stand behind their derision of the fans, I do see their frustration in people's willful blindness to these fairly obvious facts.

Going back to the topic of SHW Siren (UK Robot Wars). It's currently being restored, to be honest for a robot that's been "behind the back of a shed" since Series 2 (1998?). It looks pretty good, I can't say the same for it's sawblade though..

Once it's in fighting condition, it'll most likely be gracing the auctions of eBay someday.

This s the first. Looks like a really decent flipper, definitely worth looking into if anyone's interested in starting out - the opening price is what all the components and chassis cost to buy/print, so he'd make no real profit. Decent deal.

If you base it around a Nanotwo kit (receiver/esc combo that comes with motors) basically just scissors plus maybe a drill and screwdriver.
My current bodge job ant is held together with hot glue, uses cable tie hinges and was cut with scissors and a cheap junior hacksaw. Drill/Screwdriver for the motor mounts.
