Ironforge TC Showcases / Red's Robotic Hall of Lame: Ironforge Edition
« on: January 11, 2015, 05:34:45 PM »
Blimey, I made my last bot specific showcases in 2009. I feel old.

Anyway. Ironforge. I don't have anything new to show at the moment, but I might as well make it. That, and I have to make good on my promise to release Little Toy Car to everyone, huh?

My November 2014 BOTM entry. More showy then killy, I remember not having a good time fighting other robots in its weight class. Wins were possible, just hard to come by.

And here's the December 2014 BOTM winner, Little Toy Car. Pretty fun to drive. Using the boost button (i.e a button that sets the steering unit to drive forward) makes it very fast and able to turn on a dime. Here's a link to download it, included is the bot and the Photoshop PSD of the skin I made for it. Enjoy.

Modifications / Temporary DSL3 AI Pack (in progress)
« on: April 06, 2013, 02:04:06 PM »
Just a topic to centralize all efforts for this little project.

Right now while toying with DSL 3 I've been recreating stock bots. Perhaps these could be turned into an AI pack as a temporary fix for computer controlled opponents.
The idea is present the stock AI in a more competitive DSL3 form. Capturing the essence, but less of the suck (i.e Stock Backslash being a wedgebot with ground clearance like a shopping trolley)

I am able to AI if other people can't. But what I'm not sure about is how we'll organise our efforts. Should we call bots we want to work on, vote on bots a la Ian's AW pack, or something else?

Right now here's a list of what I've seen so far. People who have expressed interest in building a bot are listed below. Names with links are pictures of what the builder has created.

Discussion / The consequences of the battery consumption experiment
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:02:55 PM »
*5th attempt to post after forum timeout errors. Holy balls, I was forced to try IE*

I put this in DSL discussion as this isn't so significant in stock. At least I don't remember it to be. Not in modifications either as at this point it's more to do with game theory.

I was just thinking about the thread and experiment on battery consumption ( https://gametechmods.com/forums/index.php/topic,2654.0.html ) back in October 2009 and I don't think anyone has thought too deeply about it, at least beyond making use of it on bots.

It raises some questions. Particularly, is it fair to keep the current burst motor consumption as it is when every spin motor draws '10 amps'? This is most visible in the heavyweight class, as a typical 2WD shell spinner can be powered by 19.5kg of battery (3 ant batteries) relatively safely, but a 2WD flipper or a hammer based may exceed 100kg of batteries alone to power the burst motors. That's 5 times as much weight on power for bots that already can't be a constant threat like a HS or VS. Burst motors have to retract, after all.

If we change it, what do we change it to? My guess is that we scale down burst motor consumption to be in with spin motors, and reduce the power or general   effectiveness of batteries to fit in with the scaled down power economy. Bigger burst motors can still draw more amps unlike the bigger spin motors, but you won't need to install a nuclear reactor for a burst motor like you have to today.

So I wanted to make custom components again, mostly to see if I still could. Over the years I've attempted to create several mods with varying levels of progress and success before something happened; either getting bored or losing the progress made. If I do go at it again, it'll be a significant upgrade of stock RA2, giving multiple options for pretty much everything possible. You wouldn't just have the rubber wheel, you could have a thin rubber wheel, a wide rubber wheel, something inbetween, it could have foam tread instead of rubber, or it could be solid metal for toughness over traction - in a nutshell, taking the same old components and overloading the player with choice.

Here I'm doing something similar - In DSL there's a weight gap between the Ant sawblade and the regular sawblades.
The bot really doesn't matter, it's just to show it off.

Comes in 60cm and 80cm, 1.64 piercing, 5 frequency. Both sawblades have a efficiency of around 60135: The same as the regular sawblades (in DSL)

I'd call it a working beta. Why? There's two problems.

1. I need to clean up the transparency for the sawblade. The teeth are all over the place and it sucks for removing the background from the picture, much like it does for Polycarbonate extenders/sheets.
2. See the ring going through the teeth? Well, the regular sawblades use a transparent TGA for the faces of the disc, but the teeth on it are fake. The GMF of the sawblade is a disc, lined up so that a texture used for the rim of the disc lines up with the edge of the sawblade TGA. The gaps inbetween the teeth on my sawblade do not, leaving a gap in the sawblade that shouldn't be. I hope I explained that right, but long story short I need to change the mesh.

Real Robotics Discussion / Thinking my options through
« on: December 19, 2012, 08:38:13 AM »
Nothing is really solid right now, but I might as well get the word out for opinions and advice.
I'm thinking of building a UK ant (0-150g) at some point. Probably when everything falls together.  It is to my understanding the class sees a lot of action, so yeah.

Personal notes here:
- With a minimum budget of £150 and a surveying of the potential parts I will use on the Robot Marketplace money may not be too much of a problem, but the weight of parts is.
- I do not have real experience with metalworking, and only lower-school experience with electronics, but any equipment required should be attainable, and it may be possible that I have local sources to assist a project. I have previously cut wood and plastic (PVC I believe?) with workshop tools, powered and not.
- We have electric RC cars and a model airplane that may be possible to raid for parts, if only for the free battery and some crystals if required. Possibly wheels too but they may not be suitable for the job.
- Currently I am only referring to the Robot Marketplace for parts. Armor will be something to think about.
- I still have no bloody idea how I'm going to create the shell.

The primary idea:
A four wheeled box rammer/pusher inspired by New Blood Storm 2, or perhaps more simply, a lower profile, highly mobile Eye Poker (ya'know, from Stock AI) without the spikes. Even simpler if need be, Tornado.

And here's my would-be shopping list for it so far:
x4 30:1 Micro Geared Motor - About 9.64 grams each and about £9.79 each - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-PL1093.html
These seem to be the motor I should use for 4wd given if I go for the heavier 35:1s ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-GM19.html ) half of the weight of the bot would be taken up by the drivetrain. It really depends on if the other components allow for it.

x4 1.75 inch Lite Flite Wheel 2pk - About 6.52 grams each, currently discounted at about £2.45 a pair - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-DAV5517.html
They seem to be a respectable choice. If the projected height of the bot is small enough I'll go for the 1.5 inch wheels ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-DAV5515.html ) instead - drilling the axle hole shouldn't be an issue.

x4 Lite Flite Hub - 1.2 grams each and about £3.06 a pair - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-LITE-HUBS.html
To attach the Lite Flites, ofcourse. Probably the most convenient because of the adhesive fixture of the wheels.

As for motor mounting I'm not sure: There's the choice of the smaller ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-PL989.html ) and the extended bracket ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-PL1089.html ) for these micro motors.

The total cost for the motors, wheels and hubs would be about £50 and they weigh in together at about 69.44 grams, leaving 80g and £100 for other stuff.

The backup idea:
In the case four wheel drive is not viable I could instead have a fast box 2WD rammer/pusher with a resilient front end, which particularly makes me think of All or Nothing (BBEANS) except with a ramplate instead of the rows of spikes.

Would-be shopping list for it so far:
x2 35:1 Micro Geared Motor - 15 grams each, about £11.66 each - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-GM19.html
Without the need for four motors, I can definitely use two of these heavier motors. Same again though, if the weight of the other components allows it it may be possible to go for a 1:30 COPAL ( http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-COPAL30.html )
x2 1.75 inch Lite Flite Wheel 2pk - About 6.52 grams each, currently discounted at about £2.45 a pair - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-DAV5517.html
x2 Lite Flite Hub - 1.2 grams each and about £3.06 a pair - http://www.robotmarketplace.com/products/0-FT-LITE-HUBS.html
An issue here would be if I go for a caster for both sides up or just have the robot's front drag across the floor.

This setup weighs about 45.44 grams and costs about £28.33 - certainly a lot cheaper and lighter, leaving 105 grams and £121.

Building a prototype in RA2 won't be a problem. Actually drawing them up is a bit hard without all of the necessary components.
Which idea is the primary and which is the 'backup' may change as describing the backup plan as All or Nothing makes me a little fonder to see it in action.

Existing Games / BATracer
« on: January 14, 2010, 10:32:05 AM »
Seeing Joe's PTC topic, I offer this alternate -

http://batracer.com/-1FrontPage.htm?g4

Pressure got me into it, now maybe you guys will follow.

BATracer is another fantasy racer, though it doesn't deal in monster trucks - stuff like Champcars, Touring and F1 is what it deals in, though there's quite a few more carsets. Been properly around since 2002 and Ferrari even slammed down on it recently.

Turns are daily and you must do practice runs to find the perfect setup for your car on the current track, set up a pit stop strategy, how hard you push and that sort of thing.

Game Development / A little guiding topic to my "hidden" project.

Well, I just posted in Game Development -> Game Developers Only -> Robotic Combat Game Development .. but it's not showing in the new topics section next to any of the boards.

So this is a little temporary directory you could say..

Game Development / A little project I'm doing...
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:45:23 AM »
Usually, people go through what they plan to do and how far they've got, but I decided; "Hey, if this project dies, I might as well get something good out of it."

That picture links to a video.
Watch. Perhaps pick a favorite out of those randomly generated bots. Whatever. But -that- is what I've been doing for the last 4 days.

Modifications / That mod I was on about
« on: December 24, 2009, 06:50:59 AM »
So, a while ago I mentioned I was making a Stock rebalance mod. CataGORE seems to of tanked as far as I know but it didn't stop me anyway.

Was working on it for a while, but now the need to constantly select things one by one to compile into a CFZ (I don't think it's possible to select multiple things with Lu-Tze's CFZ (de)compiler) is getting tiresome. And also brings a constant chance of missing out a TXT file in the list of 60 or so. Ofcourse, the whole process needn't be, but I just like to be (mildly) professional about things.

I figured the component menu could be more compacted anyway, so now I'll be starting totally from scratch, separating the huge CFZ into several smaller ones based on part types. With lots of changes such as having many more component groups in the bot lab (The BOT files use directories to reference parts, and I'd be changing those around to make the drop down lists of parts, basically) as such, there will be very few designs that could imported.

But anyway, it's a stock rebalance mod with extra features, intended to be very customizable ingame (say like, wheels which you can trade off extra traction for more armor, or the other way around)

But would you guys want it, and what would you -really- want out of something like this?

General Support / Component GMF failings I am not sure about
« on: September 18, 2009, 12:28:43 PM »
https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/wheel_slim_txt.zip

Edited the Slim Wheel GMF a while ago now. It worked great.

Suddenly it doesn't work anymore. Don't see anything wrong with the CFL.. so it's pretty much narrowed down to the "faultless" GMF. Unless it's the other way around but don't think it is.

Someone with component GMF knowledge give it a check?

Discussion / How do you make a decent Hammer bot?

It's bugged me for years now... how do you make a hammer bot that doesn't tilt everywhere after launching said weapon? It intrigues me.

Creativity Showcase / Red's Robotic Hall of Lame - Lego Edition
« on: August 12, 2009, 06:34:07 PM »
So I'm going to start making lego bots. Because I'm cool like that.

Behold, a random flipper bot that might be possible in DSL.

Also, a Big Flip replica. Yeah, the original.

General Support / RA2 runs at crawl speed
« on: May 30, 2009, 10:01:18 AM »
After playing a big game like Team Fortress 2, Robot Arena runs at crawl speed - it takes about 10 seconds to navigate to Exit, when you just got onto the Main Menu. The computer is powerful enough to run TF2 on max settings at virtually full FPS all of the time.

The only way to remedy it so far is to restart, ofcourse - But I'm wondering if there is a workaround, or something that could be used that'd bring RA2 back up to full speed without restarting.

Anyone have a clue?

Has anyone actually got the RA2 tech demo to work?

Curious. Want to see what it's like, but that weird problem where it loads but instantly exits before you see the 'main menu'

Discussion / "Idea" on weight classes
« on: March 21, 2009, 02:17:38 PM »
(Unsure if this fits under DSL General Discussion or DSL ideas - it's more of a question, but to do with the new version and all - there's no DSL 3 topics in general discussion)

With DSL 3 drawing closer (Supposedly) and the promise of classes for AWs, BWs and SHWs, will the existing classes be straightened out too?

It's frustrating when a 249kg bot isn't classed as lightweight. Stuff like that.

Modifications / Red Zone Arena
« on: March 13, 2009, 06:49:34 PM »

---

https://gametechmods.com/uploads/files/RedZoneArena.zip

My Lumazone reskin/tweak. The spikes are tougher and a lot more powerful, the central zone is a gentler slope, and it's now bordered with flamers. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Battle Royals.

Things to do in the future - Make it possible to flip out of the arena.
(That'd also help with my latest project - Converting the Hilltop Arena into an arena for Tabletop matches.)

Discussion / Frame related ideas
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:31:31 AM »
A few frame (e.g: Tornado's 'chassis' is not the real thing) related ideas I'm gonna throw out. It'd be tricky, but worth it.

1 - Frames the normal player can use. Building blocks to making an full external chassis, including attachment points on the actual frame for armour plates to go on.
2 - Armour plates to fit each side of the frame.  Just so the whole sheet GMF doesn't break off from hits only to the top.
3 - Maybe have a row of 3 attach points for particually long frame sides. A whole sheet coming off from concentrated blows is almost as bad as having the sheet as one GMF.

Could make a mock up of what I'm talking about on Paint or something, if you don't understand.

General Support / Major slowdowns, MSN caused?
« on: February 21, 2009, 04:10:40 PM »
I'm having a very weird problem with RA2 most of the time.

After long MSN usage it seems, the game slows down to the point where the main menu lags, the insides of a bot are invisible on the components section and such for several seconds (loading?) and no motor can do anything.

It affects both my stock version and DSL one, and closing MSN does nothing. It affects no other program other then RA2.
