How is this section not completely pointless and why is the forum in its poorly organized old layout?

...there was going to be a discussion about this.  It is inevitable Mr Anderson.  This will also inevitably be in the playground at some point.

So I've made this thread so you can discuss murrica, wackjob conspiracy theories, and towel-heads without intruding into the other threads.

Off-Topic Discussion / Need some car suggestions.
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:00:37 PM »
So as you may know my car and I kinda got pwned in the face.  The thing is I'm going to be commuting to college and I just got a job, so I need a car and I need it soon.

My budget is $5,000 (though I'd rather not go that high).  I need a car that has at least 4 seats and is economical.  I'm really looking for a manual since I was sick of fussing about with the throttle on my Camry to get it into a certain gear.  Also, just 'cus I need an economical car doesn't mean I'm completely compromised with the "fun to drive" factor; my Camry was a horrid drive and I'd rather not go back to that.

If anyone can offer any suggestions, I'll be appreciative.  Even if you can't I do have some cars I'm looking at ATM.

Creativity Showcase / Noodle's Mapping Showcase
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:08:00 PM »
So I promised myself that I'd make a robot today (again), and that didn't happen (again).  :gawe:  The reason for this is that I've been spending my entire day making a map for my friend's Garry's Mod server.

Here are the fruits of my labor so far.  You may notice a few broken bits here and there (blocky lighting, missing textures, etc.) and that's either because I haven't gotten to fixing them or I have them like that to make it easier to work on the map.

On a more general note, I've been mapping for source for a few years now and probably will for some time.  I figured I'll post some of my work in this thread from now on.

EDIT:
All I need to get on the front page of most this week in Germany is 15 subscribers.  That's just sad. :gawe:

Modifications / Blueprint Grid to Baseplate Grid
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:33:01 PM »
I don't know if this has been done before or if its any help to anybody, but I figured I'd post it anyway just in case it is helpful.

So I've done a little fiddling around in RA2 for the past half hour, and what I've been trying to do is make it so the translation from the blueprint grid to the baseplate grid easier.  Since I can't resize either of them, I came up with a different way of doing it.

What I did was overlay the baseplate grid onto the blueprint grid so that you can get an idea of what size the chassis will be in terms of baseplate grid units.  This is helpful if you want to build robots by putting all the parts in a full sized chassis, measuring up the grid-lines, and rebuilding the chassis to be airtight.

The translation from the grid on the blueprint to the real one isn't perfect, but it's very close.

For instance, here I wanted to make a chassis 4x4 baseplate units:

Here's what it turned out to be:

Those with a sharp eye could probably tell its off by about a pixel, but I still think it's a very useful resource.

Download for great justice!
I have grids made for 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, and 1600x1200.

Edit: New version get!

It's pretty much the same thing, except I added handy-dandy little numbers for you to use.  Again, something simple that helps a heck of a lot.

Here's a link to the newest version:
http://noodle.q3k.org/files/grids2.rar

Also here is a database of all the different components sizes relative to the baseplate and chassis grids:

Anyway, if anyone wants me to add more resolutions, just tell me.

Off-Topic Discussion / GTM Radio Show/Wild Card
« on: August 26, 2010, 02:08:48 PM »
So it's already been determined that there's going to be a GTM Radio show and I'm gonna be the "DJ".  It's going to be pre-recorded (to avoid annoying cameos from my family) probably the night before the show.  Serge and I haven't determined when to broadcast yet, but we're going to try and pick a time that allows people in all or most timezones to listen.

The music during this radio show is going to be determined by me, but I'm going to try to play a variety of music everyone will like.  I'm not going to promote any of my own music either.  I'll announce the name and artist of every song before and after I play it, and if someone still manages to miss the name, I'll have a playlist on my site.

I've also decided to have a wild card song.  Everyone can submit one song per person (in this thread) and when I do the radio show I'll randomly pick a song to play.  I'm gonna try and do this for every radio show.

Also, if there's something you want me to announce on the radio, send me a PM about it.

Site News and Feedback / High stress on the server?
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:02:51 AM »
A few minutes ago I tried to search for "servo boosting" and got this in response:

"Due to high stress on the server, the search function has been automatically and temporarily disabled. Please try again in a short while."

Being one of only six people online at the moment, I think this is a bit odd.  I did it a few times too.

EDIT:
As soon as I made this post and searched again, it worked.
I suppose I'll leave this here just for the info anyway.

General Support / 3ds 5 crashes Vbox (Solved)
« on: June 21, 2010, 03:42:57 PM »
The title pretty much explains my problem.  Whenever I try to load 3ds max 5 on Virtual Box, it shows me the splash and loads.  Right as it's about to show me the main window and let me do stuff, Virtual Box crashes.  I can't even try to change the graphics mode, it does the same thing when I do.

The last time I had it working was a couple days ago when Serge was showing me how to make components via TeamViewer.  Ever since then I havn't been able to get it to work.

Some specs:
  • Host machine is running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
  • Guest machine is running Windows XP SP1
  • Running Virtual Box in seamless mode
  • Guest machine has 1024MB of ram, 68MB of video memory, and has 3d and 2d acceleration enabled
