Modifications / NFX.showcase/arenas
« on: June 26, 2013, 11:58:29 AM »
So this is what I've been getting up to recently.

Working on a redone Octagon Arena. Started off with a reskin, making it look slightly more awesome, I'll probably finish it off at some point.
I've also gone into the .py file for it, and disabled the Hellraisers. Hammers and pit covers still work when the hazards are on, but the Hellraisers don't fire anymore. They just got in the way far too often, in my view, especially with being slap bang in the middle of the arena. They're now static and say "Access Panel". They could house things like electricals for the pit covers or something.

----Things to do----
> Keep the pit covers closed for longer. Couldn't quite find it in the .py.

Few things that would also involve messing with the GFM a fair amount. I couldn't quite find the page that told you what everything in it did.
> Get rid of the Hellraisers altogether.
> Flatten the pit covers.
> Remove the striped bars and allow robots to drive freely onto the second level.

I had a go at flattening the pit covers, and making the Hellraisers transparent and perfectly flat, but when I tried to compile the GMF file I just got a black screen, followed by the noise of the crowd and my robot after a few seconds. I could still move the cursor around, and do the movement and weapons controls, but I just got the sounds of the motors and bursts firing and such. Just a black screen with a cursor. Hopefully that doesn't happen the next time I have a go.

Any other arena tweaks, reskins and such I do will go in here, when I learn to do more stuff.

Site News and Feedback / Forum Profile page gradually extending?
« on: June 20, 2013, 03:55:27 PM »
If I click on the Profile button at the top of the main page, go to Forum Profile on the left-hand side, then scroll down to the Signature area, there is an area between the Signature and Website Title entries that gradually gets larger and larger the longer I stay on the page. It appears to add one line per second, is this supposed to be happening, and is it happening to anybody else?

Chatterbox / BISCUITS. Now that I have your attention...
« on: June 20, 2013, 02:26:36 PM »
I feel I should explain the reasons behind my sudden and extended leave of absence from GTM.

To start with, I was getting pretty close to a building wall. That is to say, I was running quite low on ideas, and I really wasn't sure where I could take my bot building next. I'd achieved a reasonable amount of success, and I'd like to think moved building along slightly. Nothing like guys like Click or Sage have, but perhaps I contributed a little to bot building in general. Tournaments, I think, were either starting to dry up around that time as well, or they weren't particularly intriguing in general, perhaps building overall was doing the same, so there wasn't the same incentive for me to build. A number of other things were taking up my time as well, which included but were not limited to college, family matters, and my now ex-girlfriend. In short, I basically just ran out of motivation and time to stick around, so I disappeared. I understand that it was quite sudden, and I left quite a lot of work behind with my Tournament Mod position. I'll completely understand if I'm stripped of that, but I will hopefully be sticking around here again, but perhaps not quite so much as I used to.

Besides, I can't find that picture, but one does not simply leave GTM. =)

Site News and Feedback / Post Count Minimum for Chatbox Access?
« on: June 06, 2012, 05:11:49 AM »
Something that's occured to me recently, what with how often accounts with 0 posts get deleted when ACAMS cleans up the servers to get rid of bots and such.

In the chatbox two days ago, a new member called Dark Side posted a few times about SHW/UHW bots and a DSL install problem, but his profile still says he has 0 posts, which means he'll get deleted when the bot sweep comes around. Marty informed him that he needs to post in the main forum or his account will be deleted, but he doesn't appear to have done that so far. I know that's just one member, but it strikes me how many other members we may have lost in a similar fashion.

I'm wondering setting a minimum posting amount, e.g. 10 posts in the main forum, before the chatbox becomes available on the front page will help prevent potential new members being lost in that fashion, as they'd have to post in the forum to get their problems solved to begin with, or just say hecko and such. It'll also give other members more of a chance to get them up to speed on the ins and outs of being a member here, as not everyone c the chatbox terribly often, if at all.

Not sure how it would be implemented, I'm not very up on the inner workings of a forum like this one, but I'm just wondering if it might work. =)

Custom Components Showcase / NFX.showcase/custom
« on: April 08, 2012, 05:09:30 AM »
Yep. I've finally figured out how to modify components rather than just skin them. A bit. Opening shop with a component to help Cllickbeetle along with DSL 3.

Same as the normal rubber wheel, but with another AP on the outside to attach weapons and so forth. As in the picture. And doesn't reverse direction on wedges or stuff.

Gonna be doing the same thing with others wheels, hopefully.

Off-Topic Discussion / "Desktop Windows Manager has stopped working."
« on: December 30, 2011, 07:22:53 PM »
Not much of a problem, but it really is starting to <expletive> me off.

What happens is, I will be watching a video on YouTube, and I'll decide to jump to a different part of the video. I click on the time bar (the red bit that shows progress/gray bit that shows buffering), and my desktop freezes. The time bar will rapidly jump between the time it was at and the time that I clicked at, and the cursor will still move around, but apart from that nothing will happen. I can still do stuff, but I won't be able to see it, as the screen will be "frozen".

I can also Ctrl + Alt + Delete to bring up things like Switch User and Start Task Manager. The former works if I sign in again, but I have to wait for it to "unfreeze" to get there. Start Task Manager just sends me back to the "frozen" screen.

It doesn't happen all the time, though, which is what's confusing me. Does anyone have a clue what might be happening, and how can I prevent this?

Tournament Archives / Mechapocalypse Signups
« on: January 03, 2011, 09:47:57 AM »
Backstory

The year is 2065. The world has been ravaged by war, and few cities remain. Within them, the battle for supremacy has begun. However the thought of human violence brings on an irrational fear, as it was human violence that created the desolate wasteland that now stands as Earth. Instead, the survivors scavenge for steel, and any electronics they can get their hands on, learning from the texts of the past to create mechanised warrior machines. In an abandoned warehouse, their creations do battle, fighting to become the ultimate champion in this barren age.

But only one will stand victorious, and reign over the ruined city. The rest will be left broken, smashed, and defeated. There is no place for losers in this new world.

Welcome to...

THE RULES

--Bots--
1. All entrants must be DSL 2.1 Middleweight. (249.0kg - 399.0kg)
2. All bot building MUST be done in the Bot Lab. No BFE AAM, or ZeroG. Bot File Armour c will be enforced.
3. Standard Realistic Rules apply, however all glitches may be utilised providing they do not violate this rule.
4. All entries must have a MAXIMUM of 20 components on their robot.
4. No cheatbot2, AI or custom components.
5. No "invincible" armour (halfsheets, skirt hinges, casters, etc.).
6. No skirt hinge (MCB) or Typhoon Flag underground wedges.
7. No crawlers.
8. No Flail Spinners of any kind. This is to reduce the threat of Havok Explosions.
9. Multibots are not allowed.

--The Tournament--
10. Each robot gets ONE free Havok Restart per match, and THREE for the entire tournament. Any further havok explosions will result in a forfeit, so keep this rule in mind.
11. If a robot is immobilized on a broken component with more than half battery power and no damage to its control board, the match will be restarted.
12. AI'ing your own bot is preferred. I will AI your bot if you are unable to, but all bots AI'd by me will use Onmi.py, and only move towards the opponent and use their weapons. They will NOT be fine-tuned.
13. Each match will last three rounds of two minutes each.
14. Matches will take place in a reskinned RA2T2 Arena. Hazards will be ON.
15. There will be 16 places available, with a Loser's Bracket. The Loser's Bracket and Winner's Bracket champions will fight in the Grand Final, where the Loser's Bracket Champion must win at least 3 out of 4 matches to become Grand Champion.
16. Once all 16 places are taken, entrants will have ONE WEEK to make minor updates to their bots. A minor update is one that does not significantly alter the robot's design, or the way it performs.
17. If all 16 places cannot be filled in significant time, signups will be "locked" on January 30th 2011. Any members entering after this date will be unable to submit updates for their bots. Members entered before this date will still be eligible to send minor updates.
18. Signups will officially close on February 2nd 2011. If all 16 places have not been filled, byes will be issued randomly in the first round.

ENTRANTS

RED means your robot does not comply with building regulations.
BLUE means your robot has been received, but not yet implemented into the game.
ORANGE means there is a technical problem with your robot.
GREEN means your robot has been AI'd and is ready to fight.

Site News and Feedback / World Clock Idea
« on: November 21, 2010, 08:22:03 PM »
Kinda stems from something me and Somebody were discussing through PM, we got onto the subject of time zones, and we thought that it'd be quite convenient to have the times of major world cities, like London, New York, Sydney, etc. at the bottom of the page with the Forum Stats and such. Maybe like this, only more concise.

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

It'd probably help people who sometimes miss deadlines of things because of time zone differences or something like that.

Other Tutorials / A Simpler Way To Axle Load
« on: November 15, 2010, 09:21:43 PM »
Not sure if this is common knowledge by now or not, but I figured I'd make a video explaining how I go about axle loading. It's quite a bit simpler than adding lots of axle mounts and pressing the Pause button on my keyboard all the time.

Discussion / GIFF Files
« on: November 11, 2010, 12:18:33 PM »
I decided to use the CFZ Decompiler on the RA2.cfz file, just to see what would happen. I got a bunch of arrow and slider images, the cursor, the chassis point selection in the Bot Lab, the Armour Definitions which are used in the Bot file, and these:

I'm guessing this stands for Gabriel Interactive File Format or something, I'm just wondering what they're for, and how I can mess with them.

And yes, I still have a safe copy of RA2.cfz in the game folder. =P

Discussion / GTM: Home Nations Tournament
« on: November 08, 2010, 06:10:20 AM »
Stemming off the back of something in FOTEPX's "tournament" thread, it's the Gametechmods Home Nations Tournament!

Each of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom will be represented in this DSL Realistic HW single match league style tournament, with 2 points for a win before time expires, 1 point for a WBP, and 0 points for a loss.

Scotland will be represented by NFX
England will be represented by GoldenFox93
Wales will be represented by G.K.
Ireland will be represented by lloopp d lloopp

Each robot will fight every other robot once, so the rounds will be as follows:

Round 1
Scotland vs England
Wales vs Ireland

Round 2
England vs Ireland
Scotland vs Wales

Round 3
Ireland vs Scotland
Wales vs England

DSL Tournament Arena will be used for all rounds.

Well, more specifically it's the DSL Bar I'm having problems with.

To start with, I copied the DSL bar 40x120 GMF into a new folder, and created a new .txt file for it (It's called "techbar" at the minute), and ran RA2 just to check it was there. The new component was in there, looking the same as the normal 40x120 DSL bar, with my edited Component Name and Description. I noticed that there wasn't a map for the DSL bar components, but I didn't think that would be too much of a problem.

I followed Sage's video tutorial, I used Dummy's GMF Decompiler (fixed by Megabyte) to decompile the goldbar.txt file, and I scanned through to where the BITMAP line should have been, but there was nothing there.

I checked the HEX codes for MATERIAL_AMBIENT, DIFFUSE and SPECULAR, which I noticed were a dark grey colour when I put the codes into Paint.NET. So I tried editing them to make them a red colour, and went back into RA2. The component was still grey.

I went back to Sage's video, and noticed that there was a whole chunk of GMF code in the Snowplow .txt file that was missing from my techbar.txt file. I decided to make a techbar.bmp image, which was basically all red, and tried adding this piece of code, which I copied from what was in the video:

Code: [Select]

*TEXTURE_LIST
  {
   *TEXTURE_COUNT  1
   *TEXTURE
   {
    *MAP_NAME Map #1
    *MAP_CLASS Bitmap
    *BITMAP goldbar.bmp
    *MAP_AMOUNT
    *MAP_DIFFUSE
    *MAP_TYPE Screen
    *UVW_U_OFFSET 0
    *UVW_V_OFFSET 0
    *UVW_U_TILING 1
    *UVW_V_TILING 1
    *UVW_ANGLE 0
    *UVW_BLUR 0
    *UVW_BLUR_OFFSET 0
    *UVW_NOISE_AMT 1
    *UVW_NOISE_SIZE 1
    *UVW_NOISE_LEVEL 1
    *UVW_NOISE_PHASE 0
    *BITMAP_FILTER Pyramidal
    *BITMAP_MAP_CHANNEL 1
   }
  }

And stuck it after the first MATERIAL in the MATERIAL_LIST at the start (everything was tabbed along to where it was in the video). I tried recompiling the .gmf after that, but I got a message saying

Runtime Error '9':
Subscript out of range

If anyone can help out with this, I would be extremely appreciative. =)

Discussion / What's Up With Wedges?
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:02:10 AM »
Not entirely sure where else to post this, but I'm just curious about it.

Since I started out in RA2, I've never really been that good at building effective wedges on my bots, so I decided to see if what everyone's saying about weight distribution is true, whether or not it actually makes a difference. I made two identical bots, each with a chassis size of 7 squares long by 4 squares wide, NPC Fasts and Hypnos at the back, two Metal Hinge + DSL Bar + Small Wedge components at the front, and a fair amount of open space in the middle. Both had Plastic 1 armour to keep the weight down, and both had a 20kg Ballast, a 10kg Ballast and a Multi Extender mounted to the baseplate, just to eat up the rest of the weight.

However, one of them, which I had painted RED, had the ballasts mounted as far BACK in the chassis as possible, right back beside the wheels. The second one, which I had painted BLUE, had the ballasts mounted as far FORWARD as possible, right up by the wedges.

I tested the bots in my reskinned RA2T2 arena in a head-on charge, alternating starting positions each time, for 20 attempts. Out of the 20 head-on rushes, the RED bot outwedged the BLUE bot 50% of the time. The BLUE bot outwedged the RED bot only 20% of the time. 30% of the time, NEITHER bot outwedged the other, either the wedges would bounce off each other, or the bots each outwedge one of the opponent's wedges and become entangled.

Both test robots were identically constructed in every way, apart from the weight distribution, but by these results, most of the time, the robot with the weight as far BACK as possible somehow has BETTER wedges than the robot with the weight as far FORWARD as possible.

I recall another member - it might have been Urjak - testing this theory by mounting a bunch of Sir Killalot Drills on a skirt hinge right out over the wedges, and that seemed to disprove the current weight distro theory, but my test results seem to fly in the face of it even more. Could it be something other than weight distro that affects wedges?

Tournament Archives / Mechapocalypse Discussion
« on: September 26, 2010, 10:02:25 AM »

Okay, so I'm kinda starting to get the hang of modding, namely reskinning arenas, and I also managed to find WeGame [albeit by accident], which I've been testing out with RA2. With this in mind, I reckon I'm about ready to have a shot at a tournament. Only limitation is that I'm not that good at AI'ing, but thankfully Gazea2's very kindly volunteered to help me with the AI.

The idea is that it's kinda set in some sort of of post-nuclear future, and resources are scarce, so people can only find so many bits to build robots with. With this in mind, there will be a restriction on the number of components you can use on your bot.

Here's what the arena'll look like:

Plus first draft of the rules:

-DSL 2.1 MW
-Maximum 20 components. That's it. This inculdes everything. =D
-Your robot must be able to show controlled movement. Piston Fliers and Bumble Balls are therefore out.
-No cheatbot2, custom components, AI components, BFE, AAM, et cetera.
-All building must be done in the Bot Lab.
-Realistic rule applies, though you can glitch within it.
-No invincible armour, or cheaty wedges (MCB, Typhoon flag, etc.)
-No multibots, crawlers, or flail spinners either. I don't want havok bombs everywhere.
-One havok restart per match, and three for the whole tournament. Deal with it.
-Matches will be 2 minutes in a best of 3 rounds style.
-16 places, and there will be a loser's bracket. Yay. Winners & Loser's bracket champions will fight each other in the grand final, loser's bracket runner-up will receive 3rd place.
-Once the 16 places are filled, you'll have a week to send me any updates, as long as you don't massively change the bot. Swapping irons for razors, for instance, would be fine, but turning a popup into a rammer probably isn't. Adding more components is a kinda grey area here, more weapons on a rack seems fine, adding new wedges or drive motors probably isn't.

I was also planning to wait for the poll after next, to let some of the other tournaments through. ;)

Discussion / WeGame Recording Software
« on: September 18, 2010, 06:07:19 PM »
I've kinda been planning to start up a tournament when I've got some spare time in uni, and I needed to find some recording software. I hear a lot about FRAPS on here, but there's only a 30-day trial version with VERY limited functions, and I have literally no money to buy the full version. As luck would have it, I stumbled across an alternative - WeGame. It offers more or less the same functions as FRAPS, you can record at either 15, 20, 25 or 30 FPS, at 640x480 (Web Size), Half-size or Full-size (Not sure what the resolution or quality's like at those levels), and you can choose whether or not to record sound with the video.

And it's totally free. =D

http://www.wegame.com/download/

EDIT: Something I forgot about [this happened to me as well], you have to sign up and create an account on the WeGame site before you can access the software. Still free.
