Gee, I can't believe I'm the only person in GTM who still likes playing Stock.
This means all the Stock AI packs even the Starcore ones will be dead in GTM  :frown: :frown: :frown:

Hope not!

Uhhhh.....

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

This feels more like a proof of concept style of HS than anything really.  I guess this was a Mr. Hell bot from Starcore AI V3.  An undercutter 24HS.  Kinda wanted to keep that style and get the weapons to actually all hit and do some actual undercutting, and give stronger armor.  So it has some top and bottom armor, and the plows seem wide enough to not  easily expose the wheels.  Why this style of weapon formation?  Well, Geese actually did this kinda same style for a Bitter Box rebuild a year ago, and wanted to kinda keep the same style for the other bots in the team.  Also kinda gives the "Devil's Horns" kinda vibe as well, so I guess that's neat.  Also even if I did have the 24 kg, im not entirely sure what exactly I could use beyond at least maybe two casters.

Also side note, the extender work is something I'm kinda iffy on.  It took a while to come up with it and get it actually done, but I don't even know if this was my best work as well.

I regularly like what I see for Starcore rebuilds that people (yourself included) do. I know I had a PC failure that helped to cause failed attempt at a Starcore AI V4/5 a few years ago, and I am currently back from sick for weeks and then a 2 1/2 week stay at hospital (had 2 strokes) but when I can get going again I would like to try again to assemble all the good work and updates into an updated Starcore pack. You all are doing wonderful work and would be great to assemble into a full pack again.

Apparently I never posted my LW Billy Goat Gruff rebuild. It's prolly pointless now since Starcore left again, but w/e. This one is a bit lame, but I did cram two weapon motors on it, and it's fully invertable.
Also, if we go to a showcase-based botm, would it be a good idea to make splashes for all my bots?  :really_makes_you_think:

Great update of the LW Billy Goat Gruff.

I am sorry I disappeared.

My PC died and I lost the hard drive that had my games and all my copies of RA2.

It happened at a time that I was unemployed and hunting for my next job to take care of my family.

I did another PC going but have not gotten back the hard drive.

By that point, I felt bad I had let you all down, got depressed and felt people were not caring about an update to the Stock Bots of the Starcore pack anymore. (Like I said, got rather depressed)

I have finally gotten a decent long-term contract and if there is interest in seeing an update to the Starcore Pack I will see what I can do.

It is something like 15 years since RA2 came out... Is it worth the effort to update and celebrate a game that has hung on and grown interest in Robotics for well over a decade?

- An intelligent scoring system that attempts to model the (entirely subjective) judging at our actual competitions.  This might prove to be the trickiest part, as it is mostly based on how "exciting" a particular competitor is if no one is knocked out.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

i would imagine a system that would record the speed of both bots upon impact when it's a non-weapon hit and speed/damage upon weapon hit, maybe even including something like a 'sparks' system that would sway judge opinion in favor of those who generate more sparks from their hits, but also to make things fair for flippers and shovers a counter-point system that reverses judges favor through hazard impact and slams (flips, too) as well. sounds complicated but probably possible if fine tuned juuust right

I would comment to not forget F= MA. While you can do shortcuts of how much damage a weapon does and assume a lot of things if one bot is much lighter than another and/or if you scale the weapons at all to the scale of the bot size then please don't forget to scale the amount of damage it can do in collisions, ramming and weapon contacts.

Also on your movement, if you do dot products to decide if a bot can move towards a foe or not, you are not taking into account if one or more motive wheels have been removed or damaged. If they planned for redundancy in having more than usually 4 wheels and that using dot product checks and the opponent is at nearly right angles will cause pretty strong errors in the movement.

Finally, the dot product method assumes always the same level which can be an assumption you can take if you plan on always having flat arenas but will be a problem if you later change mind to have ramps, bumps, multi level options.

Sorry if I have missed things in diving in midstream and seeing some possible issues.

After we complete the updating of the existing Starcore bots we will open the doors for new team submissions.

I realize Stock is probably at an all time low but I do hope this is still wanted and appreciated.

Not to distract from the current tournaments or the heat of summer (well, to distract from that) but basically done with the updates for the next Starcore 4.0 Alpha 3 update and about ready to send it out.

Doing a last call for robot updates to anyone that is wanting to or is working on submissions.

Not sure what still needs to be updated? Check out:

BIlly Goat Gruffiest WIP. Managed to get burst wedges and irons. I have enough weight for side plows, but not enough to mount them on baseplate anchors, and I can def shrink the chassis more, so I gotta rebuild again.

Looking great! Thanks for taking serious the updating of the Billy Goat Gruff team. You have held to the face spinner style nicely. When ready send it over and I will get in the pack for the next community Alpha review.

Question:
Are we allowed to send you a user team?

We are mostly in the phase of rebuilding existing bots that are in need of an update but yes you can start sending your own user team(s).

They should be Diverse, Effective, Creative.

Diverse means explores a wide range of build types and techniques. For example, we have a lot of HS bots. If you submit another one it should explore some twist on the theme. We don't have many VS or Stiltbots or Jugglers or Hammer bots or maybe you feel you can do a distinctive Popup better than what is currently in the pack.

Effective means well built, doesn't need to be air tight as long as the shape of the bot fits the theme and effectiveness of the bot. Airtight is a nice plus where it fits. Effective also means combat worthy. Basically, needs to fight their way into the pack. The bots should be able defeat as AI multiple bots in the Starcore pack of their same weight class.

Creative means creative in looks and design and preferably a common texture theme across the bots in the team.

A team should be 6 bots. Preferably LW, MW, HW, AW, BW, (your choice on the 6th, though SHW or HW are common). Also need to include a Team Picture, Team Name and Team Quote (If you don't want, "Brought to you by YourHandle").

The bots should be wired for AI. A Forward control, LeftRight, and as appropriate a Spin button, Flip button, and the like. If you are familiar with doing so, please do place and name any Madiaba or Default Smartzones you need for the bot to respond to others when they are close.

And when you send to me in PM or email attachment, remember to include your GTM Handle so I don't lose track of who the bots came from.

you can always go for 1 black + 1 nifty, it'll free up around 12 kg which is 2 more casters then.
or you can try mounting your maces like this
(Image removed from quote.)
which would free up 18kgs on its own

Maybe my eyes are getting old. I couldn't see how you set up the extender(s) from that shot.

I figured out what you were suggesting.

Excuse me, not seeing your extender choices. Is why I posted my extender choices.

Is this what you are suggesting?

So Top Extender has 1 mace on its forward facing connection and 1 on its front downward facing connection.

Then on its rear downward facing connection, attach a vertical extender with its 2 forward facing connections used for maces.

At a slight reduction in reach that works well. I admit I was focused on having as many maces at the same amount of reach and was already nervous of loss of reach vs Irons and trying to maximize.

Will build up a version like that and compare it to the way I had done it with the slightly more forward reaching maces.

Not sure what you are doing for having 4 connections.

This is what I did for 4 connections:

I am not using the bottom connection because it scrapes the ground.

So I have:

   1 top forward-facing connection
2 middle forward-facing connections (1 from the vertical extender and 1 from the extender attached to the rear lower connection of the top extender)
   1 lower forward-facing connection
Not using the lowest pointing down connection because it scrapes the ground

I tried with 1 battery and was at half power at 1 minute. As I recall the batteries get weaker at 75%, 50% and 25%. Making for slower speeds which would be fewer rotations per second which could me fewer hits per unit of time.

But separately I went back and checked and in loading the maces, looks like I only got on 34 vs 36. So will need 20Kg to finish up the design. Looks like more work ahead of me. (Fewer casters or -1 battery to free up KG for full 36HS)

Is that a 15cm caster i see?

Yes, the Snappers in the back are up a notch so figured to fill in space and increase odds of the Caster taking the hit by that much more on the backs and sides in those rear corners.

And from what I have seen many 36HS have no bonuses like invertible (needed grannies vs shinies to pull that off), belly caster armor and/or front plow or ramplates.
Starcore

Actually pretty much all of the 36HS should be invertible (or at least somewhat controllable while inverted). But yeah, the rest are advantages you could get when dropping a motor from the setup. Looks sweet.

Well the invertible gets a bit harder with using the casters is why I mentioned.

Looks nice.

l think it would be worth trying one black battery instead of two with only 3 weapon motors and see what you can get with the extra 30kgs.

With the learning that the HP-zteks only take 100 each vs 400 as previously documented, yes I could drop down to 1 Black Battery and put 1 more Plow to the front or if I go asymmetrical might be able to squeeze on 2 more Plows.

There is some plus to keeping the 2nd Black Battery to keep the spinners at full power deeper into the match. Will do some timing tests to see if it stays over 3/4th power at 1 and 2 minute marks.

Can't quite put in 3 more Maces (would also need 3 more 20 cm extenders for another 6 Kg). Will think on it.

Thanks, Sage! Coming from you as one of the originators of the 36HS that is high praise.

I know I took a different road with 3 HP-zteks and 4 weapons per tribar arm than most. (Took hours and many RA2 crashes to load up).

And from what I have seen many 36HS have no bonuses like invertible (needed grannies vs shinies to pull that off), belly caster armor and/or front plow or ramplates.

I am sure there are better out there. It has been 10ish years...

I am out of practice making screen shots but thought you would all like to see and comment on the updated T-800 Terminator (WIP):

Type:        HS
Weight:     796.9 Kg
Weapons: 36 Maces
Power:      2 Blacks
Armor:      DSA + Front Plow + 4 Casters
(If move Casters further forward it wobbles pretty badly)
Chassis:    Pretty darn close to air tight
Invertible: Yes
AGOD:      No

Vertical stacks of 4 Maces protect their extenders and give a wider sweep to hit low profile bots like Pop-ups.

Reduced from 4 Ramplates to 1 Plow + 4 Casters but was able to grow 9 more active weapons.

Reviewing battle videos I noticed:

1) Needed belly casters and lower sweep weapons versus Popups.

2) Versus bots like Absolute Chaos, the only solution seemed to have as many weapons.

Comments?

Discussion / Re: IMPORTANT: this will save RA2
« on: June 02, 2017, 03:09:43 PM »
Another option that I have not seen mentioned at GTM that could work similar to the NVidia Gamestream as a functional option but would also have the trust issue is TeamViewer. It would allow both on same screen combat and would also require the bots be wired with different keys to avoid conflict (one with WASD and Space for example and the other with Arrow Keys and Delete or similar)

This does face the issue of trust since you are allowing the other player to access your PC. RA2 limits it somewhat by grabbing control of Keyboard and Mouse.

Is easy to set up and has been optimized for low lag and fast video updates. It is also free for personal use.

Can check it out here: https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

Optimization Tips: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-get-the-best-experience-from-teamviewer-1585428616

I have not personally tested for 2-player RA2 but it seems to have all the necessary features.

Gemini is not with us anymore. This was a case that the bots were decent enough but nothing distinctive. Things like the bot named Alien Predator was his choice and nothing particularly wrong with it so I didn't force a change.

Is a case of if people vote to remove/replace the team as not competitive then so be it. I realize the other option is to rebuild many/most of the bots to be modern competitive.
