I stopped building years ago too, but I just picked up Ironforge   and found it fun to play around with. It makes it fun to experiment again. Also, I doubt you remember me, but you were one of the first people to give advice in my original n00b showcase.

There's a lot of names here that I don't recognize at all, but I did think yours was familiar.

The names I remember most are JimXorb, ACAMS, Starcore, Radio F Software, Rejected, Foolishevil, HackerX, Clickbeetle/Firebeetle, DarkRat, Goose, and Cherry Flavored. I recognize Toast as well, mostly from RFSHQ I think.

Above all though I remember the day Lu-Tze passed away. It's been just over a decade now, RIP.

This all seems like a long time ago, but it feels like yesterday.

I built two robots recently, Particle Accelerator and The Legend of Bryce Genesis, that were essentially proof of concept robots with unconventional and dare I say new designs. There is also a third robot I've entered, WE GOT DODGSON, that to the best of my knowledge is also the first of its kind in RA2 history. (It has not yet been unveiled so it's still a secret.)

I feel the same way as you MV so that's why I started looking further into the game to see if there really still is uncharted territory. I believe there is. :)

That's great to see! Still innovating all these years later, truly one of the greats.  Maybe i'll play around a little bit with RA2 again if I get some inspiration.

Time is pretty limited these days though, and in my opinion the gaming industry has been on a treadmill for a while now with very little innovation. I've lost interest in most games at this point, but clearly i'm never going to forget this community.

When I stopped playing many years ago, it was because builders had basically done everything that could be done within the limitations of the game.

Nonsense, the possibilities are nearly endless. You just need the inspiration for it.

I meant when the community was pushing the very mechanics of RA2. The era when new types of robots were created, and physics breaking mechanics were discovered. Like "pop-ups" first being created, or Jimxorb's "rupt" glitch, or the tri-bar spinners with more tri-bar spinners on the ends that basically caused a havoc explosion.

There came a time when the era of discovery ended and robots started to become derivatives of the originals.

Creativity is definitely still possible, but I haven't seen anything truly new. The amount of value the community got out of RA2 is incredible, and it's definitely one of my all time best video game experiences.

I'm assuming the Technex quip was sarcastic? That guy was bad news and attracted a distinctly notorious crowd. I lent a hand to his forum for reasons unknown.

The other popular RA2 forums were ARC, Bots4Battle, and RA Reborn. B4B closed down, RA-Reborn was absorbed into RFSHQ, and ARC is still around today.

I remember B4B and RA-Reborn, I was probably thinking of RFSHQ though.

Are you still playing RA2? It's great to see and RA2 legend still posting.

Of course,  iirc,  Technex's and MV did not exactly  get along. he was a good builder though,  and some good members  from the official  site  had accounts  there,  including  you.

I was so young, I will not be surprised if there are members who did not get along with me. To be honest though, I don't even remember Technex.

Hopfully this is what you are looking for.

Wow, thank you. The incoming nostalgia will be intense. There used to be another popular unofficial forum that many of the best members posted at, but I can't even remember the name anymore.

It's a shame there haven't been more robot combat video games. I'm hoping with the increased popularity of Kickstarter we'll someday see one.

It would be amazing to do it all over again with a new game.

holy sh** it's metal virus

come back and build stuff and enter tournaments !

Also maybe the wayback machine could help you with the old RA2 forum.

I will be checking out the forums, but I doubt I will play RA2 again. When I stopped playing many years ago, it was because builders had basically done everything that could be done within the limitations of the game.

Very happy to see people are still enjoying the game.

I remember the days of working past midnight on cool things with Madiaba over Yahoo IM..  :gawe:

and the days with MV, Frezal and SSG

oh and the lovely Tankcat / Inf rivalry :P

<censored> all of you. I was there when Metal Virus and Effeme were still around. I saw Lugicia and Sage and join the forum.

It's been so long since I played RA2 and posted on the forum that i'm surprised anybody is still playing. The fact that some of you remember me is amazing.

Nostalgia hit me pretty hard, so I had to come see if RA2 forums still existed. I'll probably never play the game again, but it's nice knowing people are still playing.

Is there any way to view the old forums? Back before the limits of the game had basically been reached, when fellow builders were constantly innovating, those were the days.

Just checking in, cheers.

I've installed RA2 onto my laptop, everything seems to be working fine.  As long as I can find time to play the game I should be able to compete in BBEANS.

Yeah, I'll probably build a heavyweight and sign up. I just have to get RA2 on my laptop.

Hey Gigafrost, another familiar name.

Does anybody know what the next BBEANS will be?  I'm hoping for something stock, i'll probably sign up.

I think more remember, they just don't have the urge to revisit the RA2 forums.  For many of the older players RA2 died out, it wasn't something they wanted to happen, it was just kind of unavoidable.  Their interest faded and they found themselves playing RA2 and visiting the forums less and less often.

All the RA2 forums have always been special to me, they were amongst the first forums I ever joined and they were definitely a good introduction for me.  Over the time that I played RA2 the forums were the most entertaining forums I've ever been a part of.  Always some sort of flame war or controversy going on between the different forums.  That's why I keep checking in from time to time.

Great. Now I can ask "how the hell is Apocalypse Pony supposed to fight". Your bot always puzzled me.

Nice to see an old builder.

Apocalypse Pony, hmm.  I remember making a bot by that name but I don't have any pictures left over.  If somebody has a picture of it to refresh my memory i'll be able to answer your question.

From what I've seen Psycolone's bots are still impressive.  Clickbeetle has always been impressive, one of the few members who skipped the unskilled at building bots stage.  Good job Goose, keep avoiding it, it's like a bad STD.

EDIT: I found a picture.  Apocalypse Pony was one of the few DSL bots I ever made.  It worked like a pop-up/hammer bot combination.  Bots would ride up the front, get stuck and two hammers would pound away at the robot.  Sadly Apocalypse Pony worked much better when it was human controlled.

Some of you are probably thinking "who/what is Metal Virus", others know who I am.  For those of you that don't know, too bad, i'm too lazy to explain.

I took a look at the original (doesn't feel right to call them official anymore) forums and saw they had been raped.  So bounced over here to see if most of the RA2 community had migrated here.  These forums seem to be doing fairly well.  I guess I just dropped in to see what was up.  I might start playing stock RA2 again from time to time, but right now the addiction known as World of Warcraft has taken me, and I am ashamed.  However, I refuse to go to meetings to help get over my addiction.

Anyway, if you remember me give a shout out, i'll check out your showcases and what not, maybe even start up a chat with you about over MSN.

I think the way it works is somewhat like the way a 3D modeling program works.  The size of the background is infinite in size.

Yeah, me too.

Try what I said.

I had the same problem.  The only solution I found is that bots will only save if they are in the first team.  To make your team the first team, you will have to delete the rookies team and then create your team.  Sadly this only allows tyou to save 6 bots at a time.

"3, 2, 1, activate" was in robot wars.

"The box is locked, the lights are on, it's robot fighting time" was in Battlebots.  Therefor it would seem very out of place in the robot wars arena.

What do you mean ""better" robots"? Robot Wars had the most powerful heavy weight flippers in the world. Take WBC and Gravity for example. And don't forget RW had some nifty rammers and spinners.

The spinners in RW sucked.  WBC had like... one good flip, it flipped a a robot acros the arena, but it's design was complete crap and it looked rediculous.  I don't think i've actually seen Gravity.  Flippers are pretty boring anyway, it just seems like a cheap way to win to me.
