palette swap lugia lol It's the Unnamed Eagle from the Norse legend of Yggdrassil actually, and also bears resemblance to the Yatagarasu, the crow from Shinto mythology who ate the sun did they really run out of colors to use? maroon/violet/basically any 2 other colors would be a much better name for it
X and Y refer to two of the three co-ordination axes, the other being Z. This emphasizes their move into 3D. They are also the names of the two human chromosomes, possibly meaning that gender may hold a bigger role. Of course, this is all pure speculation. Disappointed that they haven't changed up the starters from the fire-water-grass formula, but oh well, hopefully they get more creative with their evolutionary dual-types, I mean seriously, haven't we had enough of the fire/fighting combo?
There's speculation that the type combinations for the 3rd stages of the Starters will be Grass/Dark, Fire/Psychic, and Water/Fighting, judging by the attacks they use in the trailer.
In case you're wondering, Chespin uses SolarBeam and Night Slash, Fennekin uses Flamethrower and Psywave, and Froakie uses Water Gun and Close Combat Also, the names of the Legendaries have been revealed. "X" is Xerneas, whilst "Y" is Yveltal
