Tournament Archives / Re: Stock's Revenge Spash, Brackets and Vids
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:14:51 PM »
Sage right off the bat, eh? Should be fun.

Predictions!

Ripblade Revamped - Badnik
- Best weapons of the plethora of VS's, but huge exposed wheels and poor wedges will end up killing it. Instability could also be either a blessing in disguise or a straight up curse. Prediction: 9th-12th.

Backyard Gut-Ripper - Clickbeetle
- With no HS to out-weapon it, only wedges will limit how far it can go. If it has 4 wheel drive (I'm guessing it does), it is one of the bots to look out for. Prediction: 1st - 3rd.

Ripblade EVOLVED - Doomkiller
- Limited reach and small points of contact lead to RE not being able to do enough damage. Fragile weapons and easily flanked too. Prediction: 13th - 16th.

Smatom Asher - G.K.
- A bit of a sloppy build, but it looks like it can get the job done against most of the VS horde. Good weaponry, but it can be gut-ripped, and its' exposed motors are very vulnerable. Prediction: 6th - 9th.

Hellbringer's Cousin - Jack Daniels
- Ample weaponry may cause an upset at some point, but no wedges and a lack of speed both hurt. Prediction: 6th - 9th.

Metal Mutts - JoeBlo
- I think that they're wammers. Although both decent, Redline's BFR was much better, so these puppies might be more bark than bite. An early vote from me for the "WHY WON'T YOU JUST GO AWAY" award for the bot who's a pain in the ass to kill. Prediction: 9th - 12th.

Rip and Bleed - Larrain
- Points for the Thumperizer style, but that's pretty much it. Big wheels and more fragile than the self-confidence of the neighborhood emo kid. Prediction: 13th - 16th.

Ripblade - Little Lost Bot
- Might win a fight if it had better weaponry. Right now, my money would be on a feather duster over this one. Prediction: 15th - 16th.

OverPoweredSnowJob - Powerrave
- Not bad at all, but big exposed wheels will hurt it just as much as they hurt the original. No wedges either. Prediction: 8th - 12th.

Stinger Missle - Pwnator
- Very nicely built, it will cause a lot of bots a lot of problems. However, it can be out-weaponed by certain bots too. Prediction: 1st - 8th.

L1TT13 M3T4L FR13ND v2.0 - R0B0SH4RK
- Fast and wedgey, will snapper powered arms be powerful enough to win matches? I think so. Tilted razors allow it to gut-rip adequately too. Prediction: 1st - 4th.

Trappor - Rolo
- I like the trapping hands, but normals are making Naryar cry. The wedges may not be great either, but it is still quite a capable bot. Prediction: 6th - 11th.

BackScratch - Sage
- The original's name was better, but this is one of the deadliest bots here. It's got speed, power, and good defense on it's side. Like CB, its only potential weaknesses are its wedges. Prediction: 1st - 3rd.

Ali - Scrap Daddy
- Well designed and built, but I'm really not sold on how it will do. It will still get some wins based on how well it is built. Prediction: 4th - 6th.

Coal gRINDER - Sparkey
- Not a great choice of weaponry, and it's pretty slow too. This is the bot that all gut rippers want to face. Prediction: 14th - 16th.

RustWall - Squirrel_Monkey
- I'm not sure which chassis that is (I think it's Walrus, based on the name), but this is one of the bots that may cause an upset or two, though it is still quite gut-rippable. Prediction: 6th - 10th.

I was cheering for the Slovaks, but I like Sami Salo because he plays for Vancouver so I'm not too bummed out.

Oh god I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight. So freaking nervous right now. Puck drop is in another 12 hours...

I'll continue this debate when I can piece together a coherent argument. Right now, I'm a jittery nervous mess about the Canada vs. USA game tomorrow.

I think that you've (Frezal) misinterpreted what JD is saying. While forcing anyone to compete for their birth country is bullsh**, as you say, and a probably a characteristic of totalitarian regiemes, JD's point is that the USA anlong with other economicly elite countries should not scoop up athletes from budding programs to further their own chances of winning medals. Also, I'd say Yao Ming is a different case, as he was trained in China, not the USA, and he is a professional athlete, unlike many olympians. It was only recently that the olympics allowed professional athletes to compete, too (it was actually the top amatuers in the world - this led to the Canadian hockey team boycotting many as they argued that the Soviets were so good that they could not be considered amateurs, so it was unfair that we coundn't send our pros to combat theirs).

Contempt is one thing (although North Korea's media controls are so extreme that few probably know how poor their country is), but I am of the mind that part of the deal of athletes training in the USA is that they must represent the USA too. If they want to get ahead, they know that they must train in the USA, and then represent them. It comes down really to if their desire to win at all costs outweighs their national pride.

General Support / Re: How do you add custom decals to Robot Arena 2?
« on: February 27, 2010, 02:45:13 PM »
The picture must be a square either 128x128, 256x256, or 512x512 pixels in size and saved as a .bmp. For some reason, only specific types of .bmp's will work. Unfortunately, I forget which kind, but I had to convert them using MSPaint. Then, just copy/paste into your "decals" folder in "Texture Library."

I'm not sure how to make .tga's though or other decals with transparent backgrounds. Generally, many of us just export the skin as a chassis texture and edit it as a whole in photoshop or a similar program.

Also, I'd think that there would be heavy pressure from the US to compete for them. Why spend your time and money and resources on an athlete that will not win you anything? There would be no reason to. I think that athletes had less of a choice than many people may like to think.

With this being said, they did choose to train in the USA, so any expectations that they may use American resources to compete for another country would have been naive. Many may view themselves as Americans too. I have a friend who was born in China and moved here in third grade, but he sees himself as a Canadian rather than Chinese.

But, I tend to agree with JD on the fact that I wish that athletes would represent their birth country more, but in the Winter Olympics especially, many countries just lack the infastructure necesary for training olympic athletes.

While I do agree that sub-categories and sub-sub-categories and sub-sub-sub-categories will help us percieve robots with greater precision, my question here would be why? The only way I can see that this would be necesary would be if GTM's suddenly banned all pictures, causing us to have to describe our bots to one another. There is absolutely no need to "gain a mental picture" when we have real pictures - it completely defeats the purpose.

You may defend your arguments with something along the lines of: "what if we're trying to describe to a newer member what a bot like Absolute Chaos or NWB is? If we are, then we'll need all of the specific categories we have in order to help them." More description does generally help, but chances are, newer members will not understand the jargon that we use anyways. It's like explaining to a 5 year old how to do Calculus - no matter how specific you get and how detailed you are, they will never understand what you are saying without experience.

Every robot, unless it's a blatant clone, is different from one another. That is why RA2 did not die years ago like it probably should have. The possibilities for new designs and ideas are virtually endless, so it never really repeats - it evolves. Just look at the ideas of CB and 123STW. Consequently, the number of sub-categories for robots is also virtually endless. You want to categorize more for accuracy, but where would it stop? Do you eventually have completely seperate categories for bots with shiny hub wheels and bots with rubber ones? I know I'm probably fighting a losing battle here, and I'm not saying that you guys are wrong, but I do think that you guys are wasting your time and effort and bandwidth on a pointless excersize. Just keep it simple.

Probably because of Kipper and Olli Jokinen (who they traded because he was sucking the proverbial big one), right? They did get Nik Hagman though, so I'm assuming that takes some of the sting out of losing one of the higher profile Finns in the NHL. I would've guessed that you liked Anaheim though, with Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.

Also, Sunday at 12 noon PST, it's gonna be Canada vs. the USA in the final event of the 2010 Olympics :O I'm almost pissing myself with excitement.

I've been meaning to weigh in on this topic for a while now, so here's my two cents worth:

The rampant desire for you guys to want to categorize absolutely every minor adjustment in tried-and-true designs is completely absurd. Already, many of you, especially Naryar, have made stupid distinctions between robot types, and you're just making more that really don't exist. I mean, come on, SnS and MBSnS? How the heck do you even make the distinction without AI? And what's really the difference between a "True" Popup and a real popup? Both use wedges, both use bursts, both are designed to gut-rip by swinging a rack of weapons into an opponent's undersides. Other than the fact that I, according to Naryar, can change robot types by adjusting the start and end points of my bursts, THERE IS NO DISTINGUISHABLE DIFFERENCE. NONE. Same with VS and Angled VS, with TS and Juggler, with One-Wheeled HS and HS. Saying that they're completely different bot types is just dumb. If anything, we need less categories, not more.

With this being said, there is a difference (In RA2, Sparkey, NOT REAL LIFE) between an FBS and an SnS. An SnS SITS and SPINS, meaning that without the new .py's its primary mode of attacking would be sitting in one spot, while the enemy attacks it (see: SnSnSnSnSnSnSnSnSnSnSnS, Vox). An FBS is basically like an HS or VS, but the weaponry is mounted to a spinning chassis rather than any extenders (see: Thunder Cloud, SlideWynder).

47-0 Canada :P

I kid, I kid. You guys have been playing the "underdog" card all tourney long, but being undefeated, that ain't working anymore :O Up front, the USA is small, skilled, and fast. Depth though is key. I just don't think that the 3rd and 4th lines of the Americans can match Canada's 3rd and 4th lines. Also, Canada's defence is much more skilled than the USA's. The biggest reason why you guys won before was because of goaltending. Ryan Miller has been amazing for Buffalo this season, but this time around we will have our goaltending situation resolved too (Roberto Luongo is the guy in for us, FYI - he plays for Vancouver in the NHL). The USA is really plucky, but I just don't see them winning twice against Canada in the same tourney - I mean, the USA was even outplayed by Canada when you guys beat us. I can't see another goaltending meltdown like we had the first time around. Prediction: 4-1 Canada.

Oh, and we beat you guys 2-0 in women's hockey too for the gold :P

Miikka Kiprusoff shat the bed, which makes me very happy because he plays for Calgary in the NHL (here in Vancouver, we hate Calgary's team). All that stands in the way of a Canada vs. USA final now is Slovakia...

<3 the DarkPack (omfg hax components) and the R0B0pl0w (that's what it should be called, btw), but the Gayblade 3000 crashes my game.

Also, I am waaaaay behind on my DSL building. I really need to brush up my skills :O
